QUOTE OF THE DAY:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
In 1985, after finding that pretty but unlabeled icons confused customers, the Apple
Computer Human Interface Group adopted the motto, "A word is worth a thousand
pictures," and a descriptive word or phrase was added beneath all Macintosh icons.
"Much of the messy advertising you see on television today is the product of committees.
Committees can criticize advertisements, but they should never be allowed to create them."
GUEST ARTICLE: Don't Make It Personal
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Don't Make It Personal
by John Colanzi
Most of us have an inherent need to be liked. We want
to be nice guys or gals and it upsets us when we
receive angry emails or flames.
Well if you're going to do business online you're going
to have to learn to deal with them. No matter how nice
you are, or how many people you try to help, the flames
will come.
Sometimes you'll receive them because something you've
said is misunderstood. Sometimes you'll receive them
because someone's forgotten they're on your list.
You just have to learn to roll with the punches.
You have to toughen your hide and take them in stride.
You'll even receive some from the small group of online
marketers who go out of their way to be rude and
obnoxious.
You can't make it personal.
As an online marketer, you don't make any sales if you
don't get the word out about what you have to offer.
Sadly there are some marketers who want the net to be
a one way street.
They want to hop from newsletter to newsletter and site
to site and grab anything that's free. Then when they
receive a sales letter or offer they scream at the top
of their lungs.
So what can you do?
Go into business knowing ahead of time, it has nothing
to do with you. As they say in the Soprano's it's just
their nature.
Don't bother responding, you'll just waste your time
and energy and more than likely get even more upset.
Get them off your list, block their addresses from your
email account and move on. Cut them out like you'd
have a cancer removed from your body.
Do it fast and clean.
Stick to your game plan. Don't let the occasional
idiot destroy your business or your resolve.
Stiffen your spine and take your hits. The internet
isn't always a bed of roses, but it is the best game
in town.
Get in the game.
Wishing You Success,
John Colanzi

INTERNET TIP
Did you know there are a couple of handy routines you can
run to find out how fast your site is loading, what IP is
associated with your URL and what route to your server is
being used across the Internet? All of this can be done
through a PC user's DOS (Disk Operating System) prompt. In
Windows, choose the Start icon, and select Programs > MS-
DOS Prompt. Once you reach the prompt, type:
ping your_site.com, where your_site is the name of your site,
so for evieb.com we'd type:
ping evieb.com
This will take you on a quick journey through cyberspace to
determine how fast your site is being accessed in miliseconds.
The Ping will make four readings, then average those four to
find out how fast your site loads. Any reading under 200
miliseconds is good, under 100 is optimal. Note the IP address
of your site as well. This is the IP that your name resolves to.
Now, if you want to find out where you are being routed as
you access your site (or anyone else's) you can use the Trace
Route routine, again in DOS and type:
tracert your_name.com
This will show you the hops (to a maximum of 30) that you
take as you access your site. Some will be easy to identify,
as they show geographic locations. Don't be surprised to find
that, even if you live close to your actual server, that you
may go half way around the world to reach it. To exit DOS,
simply type "exit" at the prompt to return to Windows.

HELPING HAND AT HOME
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Have a squeaky door hinge?
Get a can of lubricating oil and some paper and cloth. Hold the paper or cloth near the squeaky hinge..
Put a few drops of oil at the top of the hinge and let the oil run in and down by moving the hinge back
and forth. Wipe off the excess oil! No more squeaks!
Have Wooden Floors?
Tired of your rocking chair making marks on those shiny floors? Glue some felt weather stripping
underneath the rockers! Should stop some of the creaking, too!
Do you have an old piano bench but no piano?
You can make a lovely coffee table. Remove the sea and fill in the hinge marks with plastic wood.
Now, you can fill this with anything you like-a collection of paperweights, small dolls, whatever.
Cover with a glass top, cut to fit the dimensions of the bench.
Have Grease Stains on your wallpaper?
Try mixing corn starch and water and make into a paste. Rub on with a soft, clean cloth. Test this in
an inconspicuous area first.
Frosted Windows
Want to make your windows "frosted" for more privacy?
Add 1 tablespoon of Epsom Salt to 1 cup beer. Brush on the window! Let dry..To remove the frost,
wash off with ammonia! This is really neat. Just remember to cover any wood or furniture nearby,
because this drips!
Foggy Windshield
Don't you hate having a foggy windshield?
Go to your stationery store and buy a chalkboard eraser. Keep the eraser in your glove compartment
of your car. When the windows fog, rub with the eraser! Works better than a cloth!
Have grease stains on your carpet?
Shake some cornstarch over the grease stain and let set there overnight or at least 8 hours. Vacuum.
Cleaning Woodwork
Did you know that cold tea will clean woodwork? Give it a try!
Wallpaper
If you need to make a patch for your wallpaper, never cut out a piece. Always use a piece that you have
torn by hand and be sure to tear toward the wrong side of the wallpaper. This will make the patch
nearly invisible.
Have scuff marks on your vinyl luggage?
Try rubbing lemon extract over the area.
Getting Rid of Kitchen Odors
1. Fill a jar with a couple of vanilla beans. Keep the lid off. The vanilla odor will permeate the air!
2. Can't get rid of a lingering smell in the kitchen? Try baking some orange peels in the oven at 350 degrees.
Bake for about 15 minutes.
3. Have a musty, smelly lunch box? Even after washing? Try putting a piece of white bread that has
been soaked in white vinegar in the lunch box and close it up. Leave it closed overnight.
4 . Do your plastic containers have food odors?
Here are 3 methods for you to try to remove the odors:
1. You can try freezing the empty containers.
2. You can set the containers in the sun for several hours.
3. You can put a piece of lemon in the container and put the top on.
This methodmight take a few days.
Keep your cut flowers longer!
Want to keep your cut flowers for a longer period of time? Especially those beautiful roses you will be
getting on Valentines Day? Take 2 tablespoons of white vinegar and 2 tablespoons of sugar and mix in a
quart of water. Use this water in your flower vase. It should extend the life of your flowers for a few days
longer! And, before you place the flowers in the vase, be sure to cut each stem at the bottom at an angle.
Watering Houseplants
Have Houseplants? Have snow in your yard? Get some snow place in a pail or pitcher. Let melt and use
the melted snow to water your plants! Did you know that snow has minerals in it that plants love?
Tools to have around the house:
Oil Can, Pliers, screw drivers (regular and Phillips head) and a hammer. This is about all you will need for
easy fix its, along with the usual nails, tacks and picture hangers.
Lefty Lucy, Righty Tiighty
Ever have trouble remembering which way to turn a screw? Remember this old saying"Lefty Lucy, Righty Tighty"
It sure works for me! They taught this to my daughter when she had classes in shop when in Junior High.
Cover Up from the Rain
For emergencies, keep a couple of new plastic garbage bags in your car!
Cut a hole in the bottom of the bag for your head and cut openings in the sides for your arms. In case of a
sudden rain storm, just put the bag over your body! Not fashionable, I agree, but it will protect your
clothing and you from getting drenched! You can also use a small garbage bad over your head
(not over your face, of course)
Leaky Toilet Test
Here is a test to see if you have a leaking toilet:
Add food coloring to the toilet tank (not the toilet bowl) Do not flush for 30 minutes. If the water in the toilet bowl
changes color, you have a leaking toilet.
Lifespan of Household Appliances
The average lifespan for household appliances:
Central Air Conditioner 15 years
Room Air Conditioner 12 years
Clothes Dryer 18 years
Washing Machine 13 years
Dishwasher 12 years
Refrigerator 20 years
Upright Freezer 20 years
Kitchen Stove 18 years
Water Heater 13 years
GUEST ARTICLE: 5 Warning Signs of a Scam Business
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
5 Warning Signs of a Scam Business
By: Sandra Stammberger
For years now the rush has been on to mine the Internet and find
"gold." Just like miners in the old U.S. west, people flock to
the Web hoping to strike it rich. Is it possible? Sure it is!
However, those miners of old had to watch out for "fool's gold."
You - in the days of the Internet - have to watch out for scam
businesses.
Most scam business offers have five things in common. Before you
decide to invest your hard-earned money in an Internet business,
be sure to compare the offer to this list. The following warning
signs might very well help you avoid a financial disaster!
1) No Contact Information or Limited Contact Information - Most
scam artists don't want you to be able to locate them easily.
After all, if you could find them easily, so could the
authorities. That's why they often only give an email address
(usually from a free provider like Yahoo or Hotmail) and/or a
post office box. On the other hand, reputable companies DO want
you to be able to contact them quickly and easily. They'll offer
several ways... telephone, physical address, email, fax, etc.
2) No Verifiable References or Testimonials - Notice I said,
"verifiable." Anyone can make up references or testimonials that
would make you think a business opportunity is wonderful. But
can you verify them? Do they list Web site addresses or email
addresses for the people who supposedly gave the testimonials?
Is there a way to contact the satisfied customers? If not... if
you only see a reference ending with "John D. - California" -
beware.
3) Phony Association Information - Many times, we take for
granted the fact that someone offering a business opportunity is
a legitimate company just because a Better Business Bureau or
iCop logo is posted on the company's Web site. Not true! These
logos can be simply copied and pasted onto the scam artist's
site. There is a way to verify whether the company is a
legitimate member. Click the logo. If it goes to a profile of
the company (on the BBB or iCop site), you'll know this company
is an authentic member of the association.
4) "Make Thousands With No Work On Your Part" - This is the
biggest lie on the Internet today. Everyone loves the idea of
making thousands of dollars while they sleep. Is it possible?
Yes! That part isn't a lie. The statement that it will take no
work on your part is the lie. Even if the company gives you a
free Web site, free products to sell for 100% profit, and a free
shopping cart, you still have to work - and work hard! How will
people find your new Web site? You'll have to market it. That
takes a LOT of work in and of itself. Beware when people tell
you that their business opportunities take no effort from you.
5) Rushing You To Make A Decision - I'm not talking about the
product sites that offer special discounts if you buy before a
specific date. I'm talking about the business opportunity
companies that - instead of answering your questions - pressure
you to go ahead and buy in. I advise you not to trust anyone who
is unwilling to give you the information you need to make a
qualified decision. I can almost promise a scam is involved if
that is the case.
The bottom line is this: Any company offering legitimate business
opportunities will want to talk with you, will want to give you
all the information you need, will not give a false appearance of
credibility, will help you work through the financial aspects of
joining the company, and will have verifiable references that you
can contact. Beware of anyone who does not offer these things.
By keeping your eyes open for the five warning signs listed
above, you can save a lot of trouble and money.

GARDENING:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Organic Gardening
by Dr. Bob Black, Consumer Horticultural Specialist
What do you invision when you hear the term "organic gardening"? Do you think of extremely large
and beautiful fruits and vegetables free of pesticide residues and containing an abundance of vitamins
and minerals or do you picture insect chewed leaves and fruit marred by worm holes. In an effort to clear
up some confusion surrounding organic gardening, I will try to explain some of the concepts of organic gardening.
Organic gardening is probably the oldest form of gardening which had it's first serious beginning in Europe
many years ago. It first came on the scene in the United States in the 1940's and today many people are going
back to organic gardening in an effort to grow plants free of pesticide residues and commercial fertilizers.
Many of us have probably used a form of organic gardening without knowing it. The addition of manure or
compost into a garden bed, the addition of peatmoss, ground bark or leaf mold to a planting mix, using bone
meal to fertilize bulbs and squirting aphids off a plant with a hose are all forms of organic gardening.
There is no disagreement between the organic gardener and the conventional gardener on the value of the
addition of organic matter to the soil. Both realize that organic matter makes soil easy to work, increases its
nutrient and water retention, improves soil atmosphere, promotes increased biological activity and adds
nutrients to the soil. The difference of opinion arises with the method of supplying nutrients (fertilizer) to
the plant. The organic gardener uses only organic materials (animal manure, blood meal, cottonseed meal
and wood ashes) while the conventional gardener uses inorganic materials (commercial fertilizer). Organic
fertilizers release nutrients very slowly and therefore there is less chance of fertilizer burn. However, the
nutrient content of organic fertilizers is far less than that of commercial fertilizers. Therefore large quantities
of organic fertilizer are needed to do the job of a small amount of commercial fertilizer. Whether you apply an
organic fertilizer or a commercial fertilizer, the basic fact remains that plant roots absorb nutrients from both
fertilizers in the same elemental form.
The primary difference between organic gardening and conventional gardening is the method of pest control.
Organic gardeners do not use inorganic pesticides. Instead, they use natural forms of control.
One form of natural control employed by organic gardeners is by physical means. This involves picking an
insect off a plant and squashing him. Washing insects off plants with a strong water spray from a garden hose is
another method of physical control.
Another method of natural control of harmful insects is natural predators. Some insects such as ladybugs, praying
mantises, lacewing and trichogramma wasps feed on harmful insects. These insects can be purchased and placed in
your garden. However, there is no guarantee that they will remain in your garden. They may stay and destroy many
harmful insects or they may leave soon after released. Other predators of harmful insects are frogs, toads, lizards,
salamanders, snakes and birds. Birds can be attracted by placing bird baths and feeders in your garden. However,
not all birds eat insects. Some birds eat fruits and seeds and they can be very destructive in your garden.
Spray preparations are another method of insect control. Soopy water sprays and oil sprays are effective in
controlling many harmful insects. There are sprays which can be purchased that contain diseases (Bacillus thruingiensis
and milky spore disease) of harmful insects. These sprays are fatal to insects, but are harmless to man. Spray
preparations derived from plants have been reported to be effective against insects. Some of these botanical sprays
are toxic to insects; others are simply offensive to them and discourage their presence. The most common toxic
botanical sprays are: pyrethrum, sabadilla, rotenone and ryania. The sprays which are offensive to insects consists
of home-made extracts from juices of such plants as onion, garlic, pepper and marigold.
Some organic gardener's believe that marigolds planted near other plants will keep away harmful insects. There is
no scientific evidence to prove or disprove this at present. However, there is evidence that marigolds will reduce or
even eliminate nematodes within a 3-foot radius of the plant.
Organic gardening is not for everyone. Those who pursue an organic approach to gardening should expect to have
more chewed leaves and more physical exertion. For those hardy individuals who have the time and are willing to
exert the extra effort, organic gardening may be both productive and rewarding.
How to Clip a Dog's Nails
Clipping your dog's nails might be easier than you think. Have a groomer or your veterinarian show
you how to do it. Most pet stores sell a special dog nail clipper. When the blade is dull, you can replace
just the blade instead of buying a whole new clipper.
The blood supply to the dog's nail is called the "quick". If your dog's nails are too long and you immediately
cut to the length you think they should be, you will cut into the quick and cause your dog's nail to bleed.
Don't worry, you won't have mortally wounded Fido, but the nail can bleed for quite some time and be rather
messy. Most people keep some styptic powder (available at pet stores) on hand to cauterize the bleeding if necessary.
The trick to trimming dog toenails is to train the quick to retreat backward. Remember, simply cutting a large
chunk of the dog's nail will only cause the nail to bleed. Instead, use the following method to avoid cutting the quick.
Cut or file the dog's nails only a little bit every couple of days. This will cause the blood supply to get shorter at the
same time as the nail is being shortened. When you get the nail to the length you would like to maintain, clip every
few weeks or as often as necessary to maintain that length. This will prevent the quick from growing too long and
prevent the nail from bleeding.
HERB TIPS
Everyone knows that Garlic is good for you, but how can you get the benefits from it without
having to move to a deserted land. The following recipe may help you consume some as a "snack."
Marinated Garlic
Enough garlic to fill a glass jar 2/3 full.
Equal parts of balsamic vinegar, soy sauce, and honey.
Heat slowly until honey liquefies.
Pour mixture into jar, making sure garlic is covered by 1 inch.
Let cool to room temp and place in refrigerator for two weeks.
The garlic can then be eaten as a snack, dressings, soups, vegetables, or stir fried rice.
