QUOTE OF THE DAY:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"57 Cents"
A sobbing little girl stood near a small church from
which she had been turned away because it was "too
crowded."
"I can't go to Sunday School," she sobbed to the
pastor as he walked by.
Seeing her shabby, unkempt appearance, the pastor
guessed the reason and, taking her by the hand, took
her inside and found a place for her in the Sunday
school class. The child was so happy that they found
room for her, and she went to bed that night thinking
of the children who have no place to worship Jesus.
Some two years later, this child lay dead in one of
the poor tenement buildings. Her parents called for
the kindhearted pastor who had befriended their
daughter to handle the final arrangements.
As her poor little body was being moved, a worn and
crumpled red purse was found which seemed to have been
rummaged from some trash dump.
Inside was found 57 cents and a note, scribbled in
childish handwriting, which read: "This is to help
build the little church bigger so more children can go
to Sunday School."
For two years she had saved for this offering of love.
When the pastor tearfully read that note, he knew
instantly what he would do. Carrying this note and the
cracked, red pocketbook to the pulpit, he told the
story of her unselfish love and devotion.
He challenged his deacons to get busy and raise enough
money for the larger building.
But the story does not end there...
A newspaper learned of the story and published it. It
was read by a wealthy realtor who offered them a
parcel of land worth many thousands.
When told that the church could not pay so much, he
offered to sell it to the little church for 57 cents.
Church members made large donations. Checks came from
far and wide. Within five years the little girl's gift
had increased to $250,000.00--a huge sum for that time
(near the turn of the century). Her unselfish love had
paid large dividends.
When you are in the city of Philadelphia, look up
Temple Baptist Church, with a seating capacity of
3,300. And be sure to visit Temple University, where
thousands of students are educated.
Have a look, too, at the Good Samaritan Hospital and
at a Sunday School building which houses hundreds of
beautiful children, built so that no child in the area
will ever need to be left outside during Sunday school
time.
In one of the rooms of this building may be seen the
picture of the sweet face of the little girl whose 57
cents, so sacrificially saved, made such remarkable
history. Alongside of it is a portrait of her kind
pastor, Dr. Russel H. Conwell, author of the book,
"Acres of Diamonds"
This is a true story, which goes to show WHAT GOD CAN
DO WITH 57 CENTS.
St. Theresa Prayer (cannot be deleted)
May today there be peace within May you trust your
highest power that you are exactly where you are meant
to be.... May you not forget the infinite
possibilities that are born of faith.
May you use those gifts that you have received, and
pass on the love that has been given to you.... May
you be content knowing you are a child of God.... Let
this presence settle into our bones, and allow your
soul the freedom to sing, dance, It is there for each
and every one of you....
FIRST IMPRESSIONS ARE LASTING
by Theresa Cahill
I received an email today from a long-standing subscriber
and someone I consider a good friend though we will probably
never meet face to face.
Her email asked for my advice on the website she is creating
from a template offered to her through the program she joined.
She's open, very receptive to advice, suggestions, changes.
She's on the right track. The very first thing she added to
the template was her name, address, and a toll free phone
number even though it was not included with the template.
By that act alone, she's already way ahead of the game :)
But... This isn't about her website.
What happened was it got me thinking I should go out online
and look at programs of a similar nature. Get a feel for
the webpages themselves, see if any good ideas popped into
my head.
Not to steal... to gather ideas, to get first impressions,
and I needed to locate websites about big money.
Mortages, refinancing, that sort of thing.
I headed to Google and typed in the first word that came to
mind - "mortgages."
The results? All I can say is, "Yikes!"
After clicking through the first 10 sites listed on
Google's first page, to my dismay, I found only three
websites where, if I was interested in buying or refinancing,
would I even be somewhat tempted to dig a bit deeper.
Only three out of 10? How can that be?
The other seven websites I viewed were disasters!
Here are websites wishing to convey consumer confidence.
Websites that will get around to asking people to divulge
their most personal of all information - their credit
history, income, the works. And all I could think was,
"Yikes! You've got to be kidding me!"
So what? Why might this be of interest to you? You're
probably not a banker or lending institution.
But... you might be a CPA or real estate agent or mortgage
broker, or anyone doing business online!
First impressions can and will make or break your sale.
They are what leads us to friendships, business
associations, and what keeps us coming back to the same
brick and mortar or online business again and again.
Sure, if you have the cash and no time to do it yourself,
professional web designers are a great way to go!
But, if you're like the majority of us with limited funds,
you are going to need to teach yourself the basics of HTML.
Businesses or not, the sites I viewed screamed, "Newbie!"
If you've been telling yourself you'll get around to
learning HTML some day, and you are trying to make a living
online, you need to move that to the top priority spot on
your "to do" list.
This is your web presence. This isn't something you "get
around to doing."
Make it a "today thing." It is not hard to learn.
http://www.htmlclinic.com is a great free resource with
easy to follow instructions. You can do this!
Just keep in mind that guest books and family photos belong
on "home" sites. If you are in business, be business-like.
Every day that goes by, without your website up to snuff,
costs you. Time, money, and potential sales.
Visit your website now. Sit back. Be your own worst critic
and ask yourself, "What is my website saying about me?"
INTERNET TIP
Fast Browser Starts
Do you hate waiting for your homepage to load when you
really need to go somewhere else anyway? Sure, you can
hit the Stop button or start typing the web address (
usually to have it overwritten during said typing), but
there has to be a better way, right?
Well, you could set your browser to start with a blank
page, but then you kiss your regular homepage goodbye.
That's no good.
A better way is to make a blank web page that sits on
your desktop. When you click your blank page, your default
browser will launch and load the page. Since the page has
nothing on it, there is no waiting involved - it loads
almost instantly. From your blank page, you can go to
the site you *really* needed by selecting it from your
Favorites menu or typing in the URL.
So, how do you set this up? Easy:
1. First, you need to make a blank page. The best way to
do this is to open Windows Notepad (Start button, Programs,
Accessories, Notepad).
OR -
You can download a blank page I made. Right-click the
link below and select Save Target As from the resulting menu.
When prompted, save the page to your Desktop. If you just
click it with your left mouse button, you'll end up going
to a blank page, but it won't get downloaded. If you decide
to download this page, skip to step 3..
Download the blank page - Right-click here
2. Next, click the File menu, Save as. Navigate to your
C:\Windows\Desktop and save the file as "blank.htm" (no quotes).
To get to your Desktop folder quickly, click the little desktop
icon on the Save As dialog box.
3. That's it. The file should now be on your desktop. Anytime
you want to bypass your regular homepage and just get the
browser running, click it. In fact, I've even dragged it to
my quick-launch toolbar for easier access.
Oh, here's a bonus idea for our more advanced users who know
how to program in HTML or have access to some kind of web page
creation software. If that's yo,u try making a page similar to
the one above, but with links to your most frequently accessed
sites.
A page with 20 or so of your favorite links won't make this page
load that much slower (we're talking 10ths of a second), but it
will make getting to your favorite sites much easier.
Solar Water Heaters
If you heat with electricity and you have an unshaded,
south-facing location (such as a roof) on your property,
consider installing a solar water heater. More than 1.5
million homes and businesses in the United States have
invested in solar water heating systems and over 94% of
these customers consider the systems a good investment.
Solar water heating systems are also good for the environment.
Solar water heaters avoid the harmful greenhouse gas emissions
associated with electricity production. During a 20 year period,
one solar water heater can avoid over 50 tons of carbon dioxide
emissions.
When shopping for a solar water heater, watch for systems
certified by the Solar Rating and Certification Corporation
(SRCC) or the Florida Solar Energy Center (FSEC).
Link Building For Top Search Engine Placement - StepForth Search
Engine Placement
Written by: Dave Davies
Web Site: http://www.stepforth.com
Date Submitted: 08/01/2003
For many, the idea of optimizing a website for top search engine
placement means entering some META tags, maybe titling the page
appropriately, and then you’re done. A long time ago, in an SEO
galaxy far FAR away, this tactic worked. Unfortunately for those
optimizing their websites, and fortunately for those using
search engines to find information, this is no longer the case.
There are now some 80+ factors of your website that are taken
into consideration when determining the ranking of your website.
Everything from titles and META’s to content and ALT tags are
weighed and analyzed when your placement on the search engines
is determined. In a recent article by Ross Dunn, CEO of
StepForth Search Engine Placement, he addressed the fundamentals
of optimizing your web pages. The article he wrote was entitled
“A Ten Minute Search Engine Optimization” and can be found on
the StepForth website at http://news.stepforth.com/2003-news/ten-minute-optimization.shtml.
This article addresses many of the internal factors taken into
account in determining your ranking. Another factor which has to
be taken very seriously is the external links to your website.
Links to your site are not the most important factor in
determining your ranking and you will have to have a well-
optimized site to rank well, however, when all else is equal
(i.e. when your competitors also have well-optimized sites) this
can be the determining factor between being found and being
buried in the search engine rankings.
Links That Work
The first consideration you have to make in your link-building
efforts is who should be linking to you and whom you should link
to. These are two separate considerations and despite that fact
that you will be working on both at the same time, they must be
considered independently.
Who Should Link To You? (Incoming Links)
When you are looking for sites to link to you there are five
questions that you must ask yourself:
1) Do they compete with you? While you can try to request a link
from a site that provides the same or similar products and
services that you do, this is generally a waste of time that
could be spent finding legitimate links from sites that would
like to promote your product or service.
2) Does their site relate to your content? If you have a site
promoting carpet cleaning products, a link from a hair salon
will not be of much benefit. Google and the other major search
engines look for content relationship when determining the value
of a link. If the content of the two sites is totally unrelated
the link is given very little weight if any. Focus only on
attaining links from sites relevant to your own.
3) How does Google rate the site? Google has come out with a
fantastic tool called the Google Toolbar. The advanced version
of the toolbar includes the PageRank of the site you are
currently visiting. Without getting into a long description of
PageRank (see Google’s definition), the higher the number the
better (it is a ranking out of 10 where traditionally anything
above 4 is good and anything above 6 is excellent. If Google
rates the site well then the link will be more valued than from
a site that Google rates poorly. When looking for links give
more time and attention to those with PageRanks of 4 or higher.
The Google Toolbar is a free download available from Google at
http://toolbar.google.com.
4) Will they require a reciprocal link? Whether the site will
require a reciprocal link or not is a serious consideration. The
more links to your site that you have that are not reciprocated
the better. These links are given added weight. This area will
be addressed further below.
5) How many links on the page? How many links are on the page
that will link to you, and where your link will be placed is
another serious consideration. If your link from their site will
be on a page with 100 other links then the value of the link
itself is greatly reduced. Also, whether your link will be on
the top of the page or the bottom will also determine the value
of the link itself.
This may be a lot to consider, however it can save you enormous
amounts of time and frustration. People will often work for
hours to attain a link from a site they like when in reality the
site has a low PageRank and the link won’t even carry much
weight as far as search engine placement is concerned.
It is only responsible to note that as a general rule any
relevant inbound link will help somewhat. If, in your travels,
you find a related site with a PageRank of 2 that is very simple
to get a link from, it’s well worth your time to do so given
that that time taken is only about 5 minutes. Not all link
building is this simple and it’s in the more advanced efforts
(email communications with the webmaster for example) that you
will want to apply the above noted “rules”.
Who Should You Link To? (Outgoing Links)
The question, “who should you link to?” is a very serious one
and can have significant repercussions on your search engine
placement. If you are linking to sites this is your way of
saying, “This site is highly relevant to mine and that my
visitors will enjoy the content on it.” For this reason there
are a number of considerations that have to be made when
determining whether reciprocal links are in your best interest.
Factors of the website that should be considered when
determining whether to link to that website are:
1) Is the site’s content related to yours? Like incoming links
(sites linking to you), the relevancy of the content on both
sites should be high. If you have a number of links from your
site to websites that are completely unrelated to you’re the
value of these links is negligible and further, will reduce the
perceived value of your site.
2) Does the site compete with you? In this case it is your
interests, not those of the other webmaster, which must be taken
into account. Do you want to link to a site that provides the
same or similar products/services as you? Unless the site is
willing to reciprocate the link and they have a very high
PageRank it is probably not wise to give your visitors the
opportunity to go to the site of a competitor.
3) What is their PageRank? Many people falsely believe that any
outbound link will hurt your placement. This is simply not the
case. Poor link-building is the cause of this misconception, not
the link itself. When you are determining whether to link to
another site, take a look at the PageRank it has been assigned
by Google. Like the boost this gives to your site in the
incoming links, so to can this have a positive effect on your
outbound links. If all of your outbound links are to highly
regarded sites (by the search engines) and whose content is
relevant to yours then these links will help, and not hinder
your rankings.
Finding The Links
Since you’re looking for links to boost your search engine
placement, the best place to start is… the search engines. A few
searches should produces hundreds of potential links. There are
a few tactics that work better than others. The first tactic
provides the best links for their relevancy and for their
PageRank. The second provides the best results for getting many
links quickly and easily.
Getting High Quality Links –
The easiest way to get high quality links that will be well
regarded by Google and the other search engines is to perform a
search on the major search engines for your targeted keyword
phrases. The supplied results will provide you with a list of
those sites that the engine rates as the top sites for that
phrase. If the engines believe this to be of value for searches
looking for a particular phrase then likewise, they will view it
as a valuable link to your site, which obviously deals with the
same subject.
You don’t have to stick to your main targeted keyword phrase
either. In this stage of link building you can run searches on
all the keyword phrases that you are targeting and request that
they link to your site. You will have to obey the above-noted
guidelines and this will mean that there will be many sites you
will have to skip, as they are competitors of yours.
Getting Many Links –
Getting many links is not as difficult as getting high-quality
links. Some of the same rules apply here. You will want the site
to be related to yours, you will want it to be well-regarded by
the search engines, and you will want it to be easy to submit
to. To accomplish this, the easiest way is to once again turn to
the search engines. This time however, the search will be a
little bit different.
Rather than typing in the keyword phrase you are targeting you
should type in the keyword phrase followed by the words “submit”
or “add url”. What this will give you is a listing of sites
related to your keywords but also with an added bonus; a
submission page. Sites that advertise their submissions are
traditionally easier to submit to (i.e. they probably have a
simple form to fill out rather than you having to email
webmasters, etc.).
You’ll be surprised at how many of these sites will link to you
without the need for a reciprocal link. If the form is easy then
submit to it. If the form will require significant efforts to
fill out (requiring information you don’t have on hand for
example) or if they require a reciprocal link you will have to
use the above-noted guidelines to determine if the effort is
worth your time and/or outbound link.
Build Quality – And They Will Link
Why would anyone link to your website without requiring a
reciprocal link? What benefit do they possibly get out of this?
The answers to these questions depends greatly on the website,
it’s design, and the content it carries.
The most significant factor that will affect your ability to
attain incoming links to your website is the quality of the site
itself. If you have a well-designed website that contains a
significant amount of useful content it will be much easier to
get other webmasters to link to you as your site is a valuable
resource. If, however, your site is poorly designed and/or does
not contain any useful information then you have provided
nothing that the other site would need to link to, and thus,
probably won’t.
If you have a website on Tea Tree Oil for example, and in it you
provided a great deal of information on the oil, it’s benefits,
and it’s medicinal uses, without cluttering it with a glaring
sales-pitch, you stand a very good chance of attaining links
from other sites as the content you have provided will be useful
to their visitors.
An important thing to remember is this: If you want people to
link to you without having to link to them you have to provide
valuable information for their visitors and present that
information in an attractive format.
Where To Start
The easiest place to start, when building non-reciprocating
incoming links, is the directories. There are thousands of
directories out there focused on a variety of different fields.
Find the directories related to your industry and submit your
site to them.
After you have submitted to all the directories related to your
website it’s time to move on to other sites. Now you will have
to apply the rules noted above and determine how much time each
link is worth and how to allot your valuable time in attaining
them.
Best Practices For Outbound Links
There are a few considerations you will want to make in regards
to how you organize the outbound links from your website. The
most important thing to do is to create a “Resources Page”. You
should call it a “Resources Page” or something similar rather
than a “Links Page” for both search engine considerations and
for your visitors.
Placing the majority of your outbound links on one page will
avoid inadvertently affecting the optimization and search engine
considerations taken with the rest of your website and gives you
a place to place new links as they come in the future.
Each outbound link should look something like the following
example linked from an adventure tour web site:
Tea Tree Oil Exposed
Everything you wanted to know about Tea Tree Oil! From its
history to its many uses, Tea Tree Oil is a requirement for any
home first aid kit.
Each link should have descriptive text within it (not something
ambiguous like ‘click here’) and there should be a quality
description of the web site below the link. If you don’t know
what to include as the description, just ask the site owner,
they are often very pleased that you are putting so much care
into the reciprocal link.
Something you will also want to do is have the outbound links
open in a new window. It’s surprising the number of websites
that don’t do this. If you can keep a visitor in your site, even
if your site is now in a browser beneath the one being looked
at, you stand a higher chance that the visitor will return than
if they have completely left your site and you’re now relying on
them to go back.
Conclusion
With these practices put in place your link-building efforts,
while time-consuming, will be well worth the effort. As
mentioned above, however, link-building, like META tags, are not
the end-all and be-all of attaining top search engine placement.
First you will have to build a marketable and optimized web site
that provides your visitors valuable content for the search
terms they are entering. Link building is the icing. Without the
cake it amounts to nothing.
Drying Herbs
July 31, 2002
When you see how easy it is to dry fresh herbs, you may never
again be satisfied with the dried herbs that you buy at the grocery store.
To dry herbs, you can use fresh ones from your garden or a bunch
of your choice from the local market. Cut the herbs to about four
inches in length and wash them thoroughly in clear water. If you've
used pesticides on your homegrown herbs, be sure to add soap to the
water. Dry the herbs well and fasten them at one end with a rubber band.
One of the trickiest parts of this whole process is finding the right
place to dry the herbs in your home. The herbs need a cool, dry, dark
environment to cure well--basements are usually too damp, garages have
car fumes. Attics or linen closets often work nicely, and the herbs
will add a wonderful fresh scent to those areas of your home. Just
make sure the herbs have good air circulation so they don't mold or mildew.
Use a cup hook or similar hanger to hang the herbs upside down. Leave
the bunches undisturbed and they'll dry sufficiently in about two weeks.
If exposed to much light, the herbs may discolor slightly as they dry,
but that won't impact their flavor. To store, break off pieces of the
dried herbs and put them in glass vials (figure F), but don't crumble
them yet--they'll lose flavor and fragrance. Wait until cooking time to
grind and measure the amount you need.
The New Family Dinner: Different Ways to Come Together
By Carol McD. Wallace
So it's not home-cooked, served at 6:00 p.m. sharp, or
even possible seven nights a week. Today's families are
bucking tradition and finding new ways to bond over the
evening meal.
Four or five nights a week, my husband and I sit down to
dinner with our two sons, Will, 12, and Tim, 9. At this age,
the boys are good company, and I know they enjoy these meals
as much as Rick and I do, because they complain when we miss
a few nights. But family dinner wasn't always like this. In
fact, when the children were small, we called it "dining hell."
We endured whining, spilling, and endless struggles to keep
restless toddlers at the table long enough to eat something.
We weathered complaints about unacceptable food and whose leg
was kicking whose chair.
But as bad as it often was, I always knew it was worth it. In
fact, experts confirm that sharing regular meals as a family
brings a banquet of benefits. Ben Silliman, Ph.D., a family-life
specialist at the University of Wyoming's Cooperative Extension
Service, says, "Children of all ages need to know that parents
are accessible to them. One of the big messages that family dinner
sends is 'You're important enough for me to spend this time with you.' "
"Mealtime is often the only time in the whole day when everybody's
in the same room having a conversation," says William Doherty, Ph.D.,
author of The Intentional Family (Addison Wesley Longman, 1997),
"so it's where the family's culture gets created." Even more impressive
is the research suggesting that regular family meals can sharpen a
child's intellect. Diane Beals, Ed.D., of the University of Tulsa,
and Patton Tabors, Ed.D., of Harvard, studied 80 preschoolers and
found that mealtime conversation built vocabulary even more effectively
than listening to stories or reading aloud. And because gathering for
a family meal is an inherently communal exercise, it naturally gives
rise to basic courtesies, like saying "Please" and "Thank you," and
keeping your mouth (mostly) shut when you chew.
Indeed, the phrase "family dinner" has become almost a metaphor for
a commitment to family -- a commitment strong enough to survive the
considerable odds against it. After all, in order to eat together,
every family member must make it a priority: No band practice, no TV
show, no late commute can interfere. Someone -- usually an exhausted
soul who's already put in a long day -- must get the food on the table,
and someone must clean up. Everyone must eat -- more or less -- the
same thing. And everyone must behave in a way that's not going to
horrify, or annoy, the other diners.
Getting all these variables to work at the same time can be so difficult
that many families just give up. They believe that family dinner is a
good idea -- they simply lack the stamina to pull it off. And then they
feel guilty.
Yet the guilt and the giving up are as unnecessary as the linen tablecloth
that graced your grandmother's table. The New Family Dinner is a flexible
tradition that can be accomplished in myriad ways. The first step is
getting rid of your preconceptions.
It doesn't have to be every night. Sixty-five percent of families with
children under 6 eat dinner together five or more nights a week, but that
number drops to 50 percent for families with children 12 to 17. As Dr.
Silliman observes, "You get one kid in soccer, another in Scouts, and
Mom's in a book club, and that can shoot three or four nights a week right
there." The solution? "Eat together as often as you can," says Dr. Silliman,
"and make it a pleasant experience." Even one night a week, though not
optimal, gives your family an opportunity to connect.
It doesn't have to be at home. Nobody wants to spend a fortune taking the
family out to fancy restaurants, but fast food can be a godsend when you're
pressed for time or the logistics get complicated. The local McDonald's can
provide a change of scenery even the youngest children appreciate. "When my
children were preteens," recounts Dr. Doherty, "we got into the habit of
going out for pizza on Friday nights. We found we had more interesting
conversations and far fewer fights. You haven't had to work to fix the meal,
and you're out in public, so you behave a little bit better." The whole
experience is just that much more pleasant.
It doesn't have to be Mom doing it alone. Many of us still struggle with the
stereotypes we see on late-night reruns -- Donna Reed in her apron (and high
heels!), whipping up something tasty in the kitchen. Feeding a family is a big
job, but it can be split into components that can easily be delegated: setting
the table, making the salad, pouring the drinks, loading the dishwasher. "When
kids are involved in preparing dinner," says Dr. Silliman, "they're invested
in spending that time together." And, of course, you can always let your fingers
do the walking and order takeout. After all, family meals will hardly stay
enjoyable if one party resents the burden of putting on the show night after night.
It doesn't have to be dinner. Tom Price, coauthor, with his wife, Susan Crites
Price, of The Working Parents' Help Book (Peterson's, 1996), suggests variations
on the evening meal. "If Dad doesn't get home until 8:00, Mom and the kids can
have dessert with him. Or the family meal can be Sunday brunch." Lois Feldman
and her husband, Fred Stern, of New York City, often work late, so family dinners
are irregular. When their son, Michael, was 8, says Feldman, "we instituted
family breakfast. It's amazing how bonding it is, even just 15 minutes a day."
It doesn't even have to be food. Sure, that's the usual arrangement, but, as
Dr. Doherty notes, eating together "is not the only way that family culture can
be created." What matters is that family members make an effort to be together
on a regular basis, focusing on one another, undistracted by TV, telephone, or
Nintendo. Tom and Susan Price go for evening walks with their daughter, Julie.
"We go out for half an hour just before bedtime," says Tom. "Somehow, Julie
seems more comfortable discussing important subjects in the dark." For some
families, driving time is ideal for bonding; others connect over gardening chores.
The only constant in family life is change, and what works this month may cease
to work next month, or next year. The key is flexibility. If you can throw out
your preconceptions of what mealtime should be, then you can fashion a style of
family dining that offers regular, enjoyable time with the people you love most.
Indoor Pesticide Use
Increases Child Cancer Rates
Children who have been exposed to household insecticides and professional
extermination methods within the home are three to seven times more
likely to develop non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) compared with children
who have not been exposed to pesticides. These are the results of a study
published in the December 1, 2000 issue of the journal CANCER, an international
publication of the American Cancer Society. The study indicated that a child's
risk of developing NHL was similar for both maternal exposure to pesticides during
pregnancy (in utero) and direct (postnatal) exposure to pesticides. Significant
variations in risk were associated with various NHL morphologies. For instance,
the use of household insecticides increased the risk of lymphoblastic lymphoma
by 12.5 times. The term "pesticides" refers to a group of chemicals that have in
common their ability to kill insects, plants, mammals (particularly rodents),
or fungi.
"A limited number of these compounds may be capable of inducing lymphoma,
particularly when used around the home," comments chief researcher Jonathan
D. Buckley, M.B.B.S., Ph.D., from the Department of Preventative Medicine at
the University of Southern California in Los Angeles. Lymphoma, the third most
common childhood malignancy, occurs at a rate of 21.7 per million in children age
< 15 years. Approximately 60% of these cases are NHL. In the current study, the
Children's Cancer Group evaluated the correlation between home pesticide use or
occupational exposure to pesticides and the incidence of NHL in a pediatric study
sample.
The study included children and adolescents age < 20 years who were diagnosed with
NHL between February 1986 and June 1990. Tumors were classified according to cell
type (predominantly B-cell or T-cell). Telephone interviews with the participants'
mothers included questions regarding occupational and home exposure to pesticides
around the time of pregnancy and direct exposure of the child to pesticides. From a
total of 268 NHL pediatric cases examined, 49 of the patients had lymphomatous leukemia,
whereas the other 218 patients were diagnosed with various NHL morphologies, including
lymphoblastic subtype (38%), Burkitt lymphoma (28%), undifferentiated (non-Burkitt)
lymphoma (12%), and large-cell NHL (19%). Frequency of household insecticide use by
the mothers around the time of the pregnancy (in utero) was associated with a 2.62-fold
greater risk of NHL for limited applications (1-2 days per week), compared with a 7.33-fold
greater risk for regular use (on most days). Professional home extermination was related
to a 3-fold greater risk for developing NHL. Direct (postnatal) exposure of the child to
pesticides was associated with a 2.4-fold greater risk, whereas occupational exposure
and the use of pesticide sprays in the garden demonstrated an increased risk, although
not statistically significant. When the researchers focused their analysis on the association
between different types of pesticide exposure and the development of different NHL morphologies,
they observed the risk for developing lymphoblastic lymphoma was 12.5 times greater after
a child's exposure to household insecticide use. The risk of developing Burkitt lymphoma
was observed to be 9.6 times greater after occupational exposure to pesticides. The risk
for developing large cell lymphoma or Burkitt lymphoma was 6.7 and 8.0 times higher,
respectively, after professional insect extermination. The authors note that the most
statistically significant correlation between exposure to pesticides and the risk for
developing NHL were observed for those children who were directly exposed to pesticides.
The risk for developing lymphoblastic subtype lymphoma and large cell non-Hodgkin's
lymphoma was 10.9 times and 6.5 times greater, respectively, for these children compared
with children who have not been exposed to pesticides. The researchers also noted a 7.1
times greater risk for Burkitt lymphoma among these children. Overall elevations in the
risk associated with pesticide exposure were present for both the younger (age < 6 years)
and older (age > 6 years) study participants.
