----- During the waning years of the depression in a small Idaho community, I used to stop by Mr. Miller's roadside stand for farm fresh produce as the season made it available. Food and money were still extremely scarce and bartering was used extensively. One day Mr. Miller was bagging some early potatoes for me. I noticed a small boy, delicate of bone and feature, ragged but clean, hungrily appraising a basket of freshly picked green peas. I paid for my potatoes but was also drawn to the display of fresh green peas. I am a pushover for creamed peas and new potatoes. Pondering the peas, I couldn't help overhearing the conversation between Mr. Miller and the ragged boy next to me. "Hello Barry, how are you today?" "H'lo, Mr. Miller. Fine, thank ya. Jus' admirin' them peas ... sure look good." "They are good, Barry. How's your Ma?" "Fine. Gittin' stronger alla' time." "Good. Anything I can help you with?" "No, Sir. Jus' admirin' them peas." "Would you like to take some home?" "No, Sir. Got nuthin' to pay for 'em with." "Well, what have you to trade me for some of those peas?" "All I got's my prize marble here." "Is that right? Let me see it." "Here 'tis. She's a dandy." "I can see that. Hmmmmm, only thing is this one is blue and I sort of go for red. Do you have a red one like this at home?" "Not zackley ... but almost." "Tell you what. Take this sack of peas home with you and next trip this way let me look at that red marble." "Sure will. Thanks Mr. Miller." Mrs. Miller, who had been standing nearby, came over to help me. With a smile she said, "There are two other boys like him in our community, all three are in very poor circum-stances. Jim just loves to bargain with them for peas, apples, tomatoes, or whatever. When they come back with their red marbles, and they always do, he decides he doesn't like red after all and he sends them home with a bag of produce for a green marble or an orange one, perhaps." I left the stand smiling to myself, impressed with this man. A short time later I moved to Colorado but I never forgot the story of this man, the boys, and their bartering. Several years went by, each more rapid that the previous one. Just recently I had occasion to visit some old friends in that Idaho community and while I was there learned that Mr. Miller had died. They were having his viewing that evening and knowing my friends wanted to go, I agreed to accompany them. Upon arrival at the mortuary we fell into line to meet the relatives of the deceased and to offer whatever words of comfort we could. Ahead of us in line were three young men. One was in an army uniform and the other two wore nice haircuts, dark suits and white shirts ... all very professional looking. They approached Mrs. Miller, standing composed and smiling by her husband's casket. Each of the young men hugged her, kissed her on the cheek, spoke briefly with her and moved on to the casket. Her misty light blue eyes followed them as, one by one, each young man stopped briefly and placed his own warm hand over the cold pale hand in the casket. Each left the mortuary awkwardly, wiping his eyes. Our turn came to meet Mrs. Miller. I told her who I was and mentioned the story she had told me about the marbles. With her eyes glistening, she took my hand and led me to the casket. "Those three young men who just left were the boys I told you about. They just told me how they appreciated the things Jim "traded" them. Now, at last, when Jim could not change his mind about color or size ... they came to pay their debt." "We've never had a great deal of the wealth of this world," she confided, "but right now, Jim would consider himself the richest man in Idaho." With loving gentleness she lifted the lifeless fingers of her deceased husband. Resting underneath were three exquisitely shined red marbles.> Moral: We will not be remembered by our words, but by our kind deeds. Life is not measured by the breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath. Today ... I wish you a day of ordinary miracles ... ......... A fresh pot of coffee you didn't make yourself ......... An unexpected phone call from an old friend ......... Green stoplights on your way to work ......... The fastest line at the grocery store ......... A good sing-along song on the radio ......... Your keys right where you left them They say it takes a minute to find a special person, An hour to appreciate them, A day to love them, But an entire life to forget them. Send this to the people you'll never forget. |

Elevator People by Linda Landry (c) Ever noticed that strange looming silence when you enter an elevator? Everyone stares straight ahead or their eyes roll to the ceiling or they watch the numbers light up for each floor. Rarely is there conversation unless two people know each other and begin a dialogue. The rest of the Elevator People politely act as though they are not listening even though it is impossible not to hear. Otherwise the silence is stiff. Why do we do that? Why do we feel safer not speaking to someone standing with us in a confined space? Do we fear our bad breath will be noticed? Are we worried we will divulge some personal information to an unknown source who cannot be trusted? Is our personal space so violated we have to hold our breath to keep from exploding? I don't know the answers, I am just wondering and as curious as the next. The minute we step off the elevator we feel relaxed and in control of our faculties again and we talk to whomever we recognize. But the Elevator People did not deserve our attention. Isn't it a surprise when you find out, on occasion, that someone in the elevator was going to the same destination as you or perhaps they turned out to be the person with whom you were scheduled to meet. Shocking! Perhaps now the situation is even more uncomfortable than when you two were Elevator People together. Just goes to show us that you never know when the person you encounter may be someone you need to know or someone who can offer you assistance. Just another reason for us all to treat each other with the courtesy and respect we ourselves enjoy. ======================= Linda Landry is the Publisher of Cybershopnews and the proprietor of three web sites: http://www.affordablebelowcostads. com http://www.galleryodefense.com http://www.galleryogifts.com where the latest issue of Cybershopnews can be viewed. Redirecting Email
This is a handy way to avoid “spam” and receive only messages you want to receive from family and friends. You can have replies to your Outlook Express messages sent to some address other than the one you used to send the messages, you can change the reply address. To do this, choose Tools/Accounts. When Internet Accounts opens, click the Mail tab. Select the account name you're interested in modifying and click Properties. With the Properties dialog box open, click the General tab (if necessary). Click in the "Reply address" entry box and type in the reply address that you want to use and click OK. Back in Internet Accounts, click Close. Any mail generated by a recipient clicking Reply will go to your specified Reply address. Since the spammers won’t be replying to you, their junk doesn’t get redirected. You may wish to get a free email account such as from Yahoo or Hotmail for this purpose. An added benefit – since Yahoo and Hotmail are “Internet” based, you can read your mail anyplace you happen to be – a real plus for those who travel. -- Bob publishes the free weekly "Your Business" Newsletter Visit his Web Site at http://adv-marketing.com/business to subscribe and place a Free Ad for your business. |

This is more of a financial article. Learning how
to diversify your income potential is more than
signing up for affiliate programs. You need to
learn how to interpret the market. By empowering
yourself with this knowledge, you are able to
separate the hype from actual facts. Investing
is a risk. I am not telling you to go buy stocks
Monday morning at the sound of the whistle. You
need to first pick you some stocks and "play."
Make believe, if you will. Pick up the paper,
decide on a few that catch your fancy and write
them down in a ledger, exactly how they are listed.
Decide how many "stocks" you are going to buy and
check the stock daily. Write down the changes and
compute your "value." IMPORTANT!!!! When you do buy stocks, only buy what you can afford to lose. Remember, you could lose it all in one day. So don't place all your money out there! Introduction to Investing Basics What is Investing? The idea behind investing is that money is put to use in such a way that it is likely to turn into more money. This could happen because someone is willing to pay interest to use the money or because the value of whatever security the money was used to buy increases during the period of ownership. Destinations for invested money include savings accounts, stocks, bonds, mutual funds and numerous other investment options. It is important to note that because money can be invested, the value of a given amount of money changes over time. The longer that a given amount of money is under your control, the longer you have to invest it and make more money from it. For this reason, it is almost always preferable to have money sooner rather than later. The name given to this concept is the "time value of money"; that is, the idea that a dollar now is worth more than a dollar in the future, because a dollar now can accrue value through interest or other appreciation until the time at which the dollar in the future would be received. At the same time, there is a penalty associated with not investing the money that you already have. Because prices tend to rise over time, the value of money gradually decreases. This effect is called inflation. Money that is not invested or that is accruing value at a slower rate than the rate of inflation is becoming worth less and less as time passes. Therefore, investing is not only an opportunity to make more money, but it is the only way to protect the money that you already have. Another spectacular benefit associated with many investments is compounding. Money that is earning interest grows at a constant rate, paying the same amount of interest at the end of each time period. However, if that interest is added to the principal that began earning money originally, there is more money earning interest. In this way, interest causes money to increase in value exponentially over time. As more and more money earns interest, more and more interest is earned. This scenario is constantly playing out in bank accounts, CDs, and any other investment that offers compound interest. The more frequently the interest compounds, the bigger the payoff because, on average, more money is earning interest at any given time. At this point, it is important to distinguish between investing and gambling. Earning interest and taking advantage of compounding may not produce the immediate jackpot that comes with winning the lottery, but the risk of ending up with nothing is often far worse than waiting for a safe investment to pay off. Pouring a great deal of money into one stock is very similar to gambling. It could pay off, but if it doesn't the potential losses are great. Safe and diverse investments may slow the pace of returns, but they also prevent the bottom from falling out and leaving you with nothing. For a further analysis of the distinction between gambling and investing, read "What is the Difference between Gambling and Investing?" |

| WHAT GUERRILLAS KNOW ABOUT EMAIL By Jay Conrad Levinson ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Mark Twain said he never let his schooling interfere with his education. Regardless of your schooling, there's little chance it covered what technology makes possible today. If you took a course in how computers can aid your marketing, the first insight you would have gained would be into the profitability for you if you become savvy about email. Guerrillas a well aware that free marketing exists in its most free state as email, which is far more than merely letters with free postage. When you think of email, don't compare it with snail mail because it's considerably different. For one thing, response rates are higher. In fact, it is such an improvement on old-fashioned mail delivery that the U.S. Postal service now uses it, and today there is a lot more email being sent daily than snail mail. Soon, half of all bills and payments will be sent electronically. You can use email in your marketing in ways that will make your customers delighted to be doing business with you. Guerrillas love email but hate spam. Their affinity to email is because they can deliver their messages instantly and to anywhere in the world if the recipients are online, as more and more of them are with each word I type. That means email saves you time in communicating and money that you used to spend on postage. Each recipient can read your email on screen or print and save it just as with a standard letter, which does use paper. But you don't have to print and save your email, saving you the cost of paper and the convenience of space. Save it in your computer. Make copies as you need them. All your files and memos can be kept in one convenient location. Each one is dated and timed. Many experts feel that for all the great things about being online, email is the most valuable of all computer applications. Email also helps you save on the cost of courier service and faxing. You can use it to send brief messages or long documents, to send black and white communications or colorful, beautifully-designed materials. It's easy for you and easy for the person who receives your email. Who should that be? People who want to receive it. Find their names on your customer list, in the newsgroups to which you belong, in chatrooms where they're talking about your industry. When using it, keep your message as brief as possible because people read computer screens differently than letters. They know being online saves time and don't want to waste time reading long things. As Thomas Jefferson said, "Never use two words when one word will do." The most important part of your email? Your subject line. The best day to send it? Friday. The main reasons guerrillas like it so much? Ease of testing and absence of stamps. So stop licking and start clicking. ***** To reproduce this article please include the following ========================================================= Jay Conrad Levinson is the author of the "Guerrilla Marketing" series of books, the most popular marketing series in history with 14 million sold, now in 39 languages. | "The Garden Guy" by David Soper 4 Key Steps to Plant Protection There are five steps to protecting your garden from destructive pests. They really are common sense and they really work. So, here is what the entomologists or bug experts say: Step One: What triggers you into action? You'll need to decide when you absolutely must swing into action. Every one of your plants has an aesthetic and economic value. The lower the value the less damage to you if it is lost. If slugs wiped out a petunia, you can replace it for little money or effort. On the other hand, your choice Spirea x bumalda 'Goldflame' that has be growing nicely for several years is in danger, you most likely will want to act. So you need to identify the plants you really want to protect. You are not abandoning the others. You just recognize that saving them is a lower priority. Step Two: Here's where a little scholarship comes into play. You need to learn what insects attack your plants. What does the damage look like? When is the best time to act (pests have different levels of vulnerability during their complex life cycles)? You can get this information at your county extension office (funding cuts have made this harder) or from any school offering horticulture classes in your area. You might even buy an illustrated book with enough information about any given insect to help you plan an attack. Step Three: Plan a specific time, once or twice a week, to do a battlefield inspection. On this tour you need to look past your beautiful plants and brilliant garden design. You are looking specifically for the beginnings of a problem. While you may want to look more carefully at the plants you made higher priority (see Step One). By the way, don't forget to look at the bark of the trees for any abnormality. You're looking for scale and other problems. Unpleasant surprises can happen when you aren't looking. Mites, for example, have short lifespans, but can cause tremendous damage if you don't catch them early. Here is where your skills as an investigator come into play. Identify the culprits, if you can, or take the evidence to damage to someone who can. You may even want to equip yourself for the fight. Buy a 10x or 20x power magnifying glass. If find as I age, it is harder to see the little things without some help. It is a lot easier to identify a bug when you can see it "up close and personal." Use a white piece of paper and tap suspect leaves over it. Look for mites, thrips or other tiny pests as they scramble to get off the paper. If you are having serious problems or your garden is particularly dense, consider buying a sweep or net to skim around your plants. You might be surprised by the harvest. Of course, not all the bugs you'll find are bad guys. You need to be able to tell them apart. Step Four: Now you've identified the problem, what is the action plan or solution? While you were researching about bugs, you've probably come across several recommended solutions. Different pests mean different solution. There is no one universal answer, organic or otherwise. One solution might be a change in the overall culture. Lots of problems happen because of high humidity from watering. Maybe you can change to drip irrigation, a method that will change the humidity at plant level. Or, change your watering schedule to early in the day so foliage will be dry before dark. Mites like it hot and thrive on water-stressed plants so water these infected or prone plants more often. We create lots of problems ourselves by under- or over-fertilizing. Plants react to that situation with stress and stress attracts many pests. Next week, we'll cover some specific solutions and look at introducing friendly insects into your garden. Good luck and great gardening. ----- David Soper, The Garden Guy, writes and lectures on gardening topics. Read more on his website, Adventures in Gardening, http://www.gardenguy.com |

"Cooking for the Empty Nest" by Susan Kemp Chicken and Beef Kabobs 1 pound lean tender beef cut into 1-inch cubes 1 pound chicken breasts cut into 1-inch cubes 1/4 cup olive oil 1 clove garlic 2 Tbsp. dry sherry 2 Tbsp. soy sauce 1 small bottle Italian dressing 2 onions, quartered 1 pint cherry tomatoes 1 pound fresh mushrooms 2 yellow, red or green peppers or a combination of each sliced 1 - 15 oz. can pineapple chunks, drained Place beef cubes in the mixture of olive oil, garlic, dry sherry and soy sauce and marinate for at least 1 hour. Place chicken cubes in the Italian dressing and allow to marinate at the same time as the beef. When the meat is finished marinating place on skewers alternating with vegetables. Brush on the remaining Italian dressing and grill over medium-high heat to desired doneness. We love Kabobs. The wonderful blend of colors and flavors makes for a main course that is both attractive and tasty . You can also get creative with the ingredients. For example, fresh zucchini slices can be used on the Kabobs along with very thin slices of red potatoes. You can also add different meats to the mix such as large shrimp, scallops and firm fish like tuna. ----- Yours in cooking - Sue Add this book to your repertoire, you will not regret it! |

Disciplining Your Horse – What Works and What Doesn't by: Rebecca Sweat Sooner or later, your horse is bound to do something he shouldn’t. Perhaps he nips at you when you saddle him up, focuses on his pasture mates rather than on you, or tries to run you over when you’re working with him on the ground. Maybe you’ve been struggling with your horse’s bad habits for weeks, months or even years. If this is the case, chances are you’re not using effective correction techniques. Discipline that is harsh, inconsistent or after the fact doesn’t solve behavior problems. Rather than improve a situation, inappropriate discipline usually reinforces the bad behavior or creates new problems. Your horse will become confused about what is expected of him, he may decide you’re someone who either can be bullied or is a bully, and the relationship between you and your horse will suffer. The truth is, you don’t have to make your horse feel bad to teach him a lesson. When you discipline him properly, both you and your horse come away winners. Here are seven suggestions for disciplining your horse: Interrupt the Behavior When you notice your horse getting ready to do something he shouldn’t, your best strategy is to interrupt the behavior. “You might simply let your horse run into your elbow as he is attempting to bite you, by simply meeting him half way,” says Steve Rother, a horse teacher and clinician in Medford, Ore. This correction is effective because the human does not appear as a “bully” to the horse. With the horse’s poor depth perception, he will think he just misjudged the distance and not take it as a challenge from the human. This method of discipline, sometimes called blocking, simply involves lifting your elbow toward his head or neck at the moment the horse approaches you with his body. More harsh methods only seem to disrupt the behavior momentarily, lacking long-term effects. For example, you can disrupt a bad behavior by blasting an air horn or making some other loud noise. This will make your horse stop what he was doing and refocus his attention on something else. However, you might need the horn again next time to exert the same effect. As opposed to harsh interruptions, timely positive reinforcements are more effective and should be stressed in your regular training sessions. Make Your Corrections Timely Corrections, defined here as any intervention to modify behavior, must be applied at the very instant your horse misbehaves. “If your horse bites you and then you hit him after the incident has occurred, you are too late and you will simply teach your horse to bite you quicker next time,” Rother says. Your horse won’t understand that you’re correcting him for something he did 15 seconds earlier. In addition, the hitting might be interpreted simply as pain inflicted for no reason at all. Be Consistent Respond to the same behavior in the same way every time. Consistent positive awards work best in a training program and when attempting to modify behavior. The use of carrots, candies, small amounts of grain, gentle rubbing, or simply easing the task at hand are examples of positive rewards. Soothing conversation may also help, but don’t count on the horse understanding your tone. Whatever the mode, these rewards must be delivered in a consistent fashion, with the magnitude of the reward proportional to the achievement. Too much reward also nullifies the effect, of course. Consistency also applies to punishment: “If you let a bad behavior slide, even just once, your horse will take note of it,” says Dr. Dean Scoggins, Equine Extension Veterinarian at the University of Illinois. “You have to be consistent with your corrections and do it every time. If you’re inconsistent, your horse will periodically challenge you to see if you’re still in charge.” Avoid Harsh Punishments Punishments such as slapping, poking, whipping, yelling and excessive jerking are rarely, if ever, effective, says Sandy Arledge, a horse trainer and breeder with American Quarter Horses in San Diego, Calif. You don’t accomplish anything constructive when you’re harsh with your horse. It just irritates or scares him, which only exacerbates an already bad situation. If you get mad at your horse and lose your temper, all your horse is going to think about is that he wants to get away from you; he’s not going to be in the right frame of mind to learn. Firecrackers, loud fog horns, whips and spurs are injurious and do not curb bad behavior in many cases. Be Fair Make sure you are meeting your horse’s needs before you discipline him. For instance, “it would be unfair to punish a young horse for feeling good, if he’s been locked up in his corral for a week,” Arledge says. “That would be your fault, not his.” Don’t Set Your Horse Up To Misbehave If you know the particular circumstances that evoke bad behavior, try to avoid that scenario. For example, don't provoke a biter by playing with the shank in his mouth. If a horse is defensive about his food, don't startle him by barging into the stall at the start of feeding. If your horse is a biter, you shouldn’t hand feed him or pet his nose or face. If you do, you will in effect, be setting him up to do something he shouldn’t. On the other hand, feeding by hand “can be used to reduce aggression,” says Dr. Nicholas Dodman, professor and animal behaviorist at Tufts University School of Veterinary Medicine. A bad behavior like biting is obviously complex, and you may have to try different approaches, depending on the response of the horse. Use Timely Positive Reinforcement We constantly apply “pressure” to our horses by asking them to work, sometimes at increasing difficulties. We are careful to plan the increments of pressure, but sometimes we neglect to stage the rewards carefully. The use of positive reinforcement can start to outweigh the need for negative reinforcement and modify bad behaviors. This can be done by simply releasing your pressure on the horse at the moment you see real progress or by rewarding the horse with a treat at this very moment. A moment too long, and the positive reinforcement is ineffectual. The best riders and trainers have an excellent sense of when to back off and reward the smallest achievement. Put your horse in situations where you know he will behave properly so that you can reward him with praise and an occasional treat. “You should be thought of by your horse as someone who provides stability and leadership,” Scoggins says, “not as being the source of something that is associated with pain and discomfort.” When These Principles Don't Work Despite all efforts, some horses still do not respond to interruption(blocking) techniques, persuasion, fairness, consistency and positive reinforcement. If you think you are running into a brick wall and out of patience, you are not alone. In fact, behavioral oddities for many years have been a leading cause of relinquishment, sale, and slaughter and many broken hearts. Before giving up, however, you should consult a veterinary behaviorist and trainer to give you some tips. Haul your horse into some good clinics and get some outside opinions. Take a look at www.horsehelp.com, a very helpful Web site run by clinician Robert Reich, who also consults online. Behavioral modification is one of the most challenging activities with animals. It is tremendously rewarding when good results are obtained because some of these “offbeat” horses are also the smartest and athletically the most talented. The key is to stay within the bounds of the horse’s personality and not to expect too much or too little, and to react appropriately to changes in behavior, both good and bad, in a consistent fashion. |

Health Tip of the Week by Dr. Earl Mindell Is it true that spaghetti sauce can reduce your risk of cancer? Tomato-based products contain the powerful antioxidant, lycopene. Research shows that increasing dietary lycopene levels may be a significant protector against cancer. Studies in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute, December, 2002, report that high levels of lycopene are particularly effective in protecting against cancers of the digestive tract, esophagus, and prostate cancer. I recommend that six to seven servings of tomato-based products per week will increase levels of antioxidants and protect against various forms of cancer. ----- Visit http://keith.freelife.com to learn more about how Dr. Earl Mindell can help you get into the best shape of your life. |

| Aneurysms A Leak In Your Circulatory System PART 1 of 9 I had an interesting question from a reader about "a hole in the aorta". And as frequently happens, I get carried away by these simple questions. I know people don't expect long dissertations on their subjects when they ask a health-related question. They don't provide me with a reason for the question, so I can't give any specific information. I answered the reader's question directly with very little detail. However, I thought you might be interested in knowing a little more. Have you ever even thought of an aneurysm? Probably not unless you are directly involved as a participant/patient or a relative? I thought you might like to know what actually happens in an aneurysm: how it gets to be that way, what possible causes there are, what treatment is given, what side effects can happen, if they can be prevented and if you have one, what's ahead for you. First, let's learn what it actually is. Aneurysms occur in the circulatory system. This network of "smooth" corridors includes the heart, lungs, arteries, arterioles (small arteries), and capillaries (very tiny blood vessels), and veins and venules (very small veins). (Did you know that if you laid all these vessels end-to-end, they'd extend about 60,000 miles? That's enough to tie up the earth twice around!) This "transportation corridor" goes all through the body. Picture a tube-like "container" along the lines of a garden hose. It's a hollow, clean, inner corridor (space) with no blockages unless they are there naturally. Close to the center of your body, the diameter of these spaces is very large in comparison to other body structures. As it goes outwards towards the farthest parts of the body, the diameters get smaller and smaller. (Arteries change to arterioles and vein are called venules). Normally this corridor has "routes" or vessels that go to the toes, the fingertips, and to the brain. And of course everywhere in between. (It's like the traffic tunnel under the Hudson River coming into New York City. Or the underground in London, England. We are talking about the container: not the contents. This are similar to the highway and the cars on the highway or the coal cars on the train tracks. The cars carry the load, but they are not the ones having this "mechanical" problem: the highway is. With the aneurysm, it's the corridor itself or the vessel holding the blood that has the problem. ------------------------------------------- Karin Henderson is a registered nurse and is THE PEBBLE®'s columnist for our MEDICAL COLUMN.
