The Book of Genesis, Chapter 4

King James Version

Genesis 3.

The Book of Genesis

Return to Index

Chapter 4

1

And Adam knew Eve his wife; and she conceived, and bare Cain, and said, I have gotten a man from the LORD.

2

And she again bare his brother Abel. And Abel was a keeper of sheep, but Cain was a tiller of the ground.

3

And in process of time it came to pass, that Cain brought of the fruit of the ground an offering unto the LORD.

4

And Abel, he also brought of the firstlings of his flock and of the fat thereof. And the LORD had respect unto Abel and to his offering:

5

But unto Cain and to his offering he had not respect. And Cain was very wroth, and his countenance fell.

6

And the LORD said unto Cain, Why art thou wroth? and why is thy countenance fallen?

7

If thou doest well, shalt thou not be accepted? and if thou doest not well, sin lieth at the door. And unto thee shall be his desire, and thou shalt rule over him.

8

And Cain talked with Abel his brother: and it came to pass, when they were in the field, that Cain rose up against Abel his brother, and slew him.

9

And the LORD said unto Cain, Where is Abel thy brother? And he said, I know not: Am I my brother's keeper?

10

And he said, What hast thou done? the voice of thy brother's blood crieth unto me from the ground.

11

And now art thou cursed from the earth, which hath opened her mouth to receive thy brother's blood from thy hand;

12

When thou tillest the ground, it shall not henceforth yield unto thee her strength; a fugitive and a vagabond shalt thou be in the earth.

13

And Cain said unto the LORD, My punishment is greater than I can bear.

14

Behold, thou hast driven me out this day from the face of the earth; and from thy face shall I be hid; and I shall be a fugitive and a vagabond in the earth; and it shall come to pass, that every one that findeth me shall slay me.

15

And the LORD said unto him, Therefore whosoever slayeth Cain, vengeance shall be taken on him sevenfold. And the LORD set a mark upon Cain, lest any finding him should kill him.

16

And Cain went out from the presence of the LORD, and dwelt in the land of Nod, on the east of Eden.

17

And Cain knew his wife; and she conceived, and bare Enoch: and he builded a city, and called the name of the city, after the name of his son, Enoch.

18

And unto Enoch was born Irad: and Irad begat Mehujael: and Mehujael begat Methusael: and Methusael begat Lamech.

19

And Lamech took unto him two wives: the name of the one was Adah, and the name of the other Zillah.

20

And Adah bare Jabal: he was the father of such as dwell in tents, and of such as have cattle.

21

And his brother's name was Jubal: he was the father of all such as handle the harp and organ.

22

And Zillah, she also bare Tubalcain, an instructer of every artificer in brass and iron: and the sister of Tubalcain was Naamah.

23

And Lamech said unto his wives, Adah and Zillah, Hear my voice; ye wives of Lamech, hearken unto my speech: for I have slain a man to my wounding, and a young man to my hurt.

24

If Cain shall be avenged sevenfold, truly Lamech seventy and sevenfold.

25

And Adam knew his wife again; and she bare a son, and called his name Seth: For God, said she, hath appointed me another seed instead of Abel, whom Cain slew.

26

And to Seth, to him also there was born a son; and he called his name Enos: then began men to call upon the name of the LORD.

Genesis 5

Be Clear!

by Ken Darby

Let's face it -- English is a crazy language. There is no egg in eggplant nor ham in hamburger; neither apple nor pine in pineapple.

English muffins weren't invented in England or French fries in France. Sweetmeats are candies while sweetbreads, which aren't sweet, are meat.

We take English for granted. But if we explore its paradoxes, we find that quicksand can work slowly, boxing rings are square and a guinea pig is neither from Guinea nor is it a pig.

And why is it that writers write but fingers don't fing, grocers don't grocer and hammers don't ham? If the plural of tooth is teeth, why isn't the plural of booth beeth? One goose, 2 geese. So one moose, 2 meese? One index, 2 indices?

Doesn't it seem crazy that you can make amends but not one amend, that you comb through annals of history but not a single annal?

If you have a bunch of odds and ends and get rid of all but one of them, what do you call it?

If teachers taught, why didn't preacher praught? If a vegetarian eats vegetables, what does a humanitarian eat? If you wrote a letter, perhaps you bote your tongue?

In what language do people recite at a play and play at a recital? Ship by truck and send cargo by ship? Have noses that run and feet that smell? Park on driveways and drive on parkways?

How can a slim chance and a fat chance be the same, while a wise man and wise guy are opposites? How can overlook and oversee be opposites, while quite a lot and quite a few are alike?

How can the weather be hot as hell one day and cold as hell another.

Have you noticed that we talk about certain things only when they are absent?

Have you ever seen a horseful carriage or a strapful gown? Met a sung hero or experienced requited love? Have you ever run into someone who was combobulated, gruntled, ruly or peccable? And where are all those people who ARE spring chickens or who would ACTUALLY hurt a fly?

You have to marvel at the unique lunacy of a language in which your house can burn up as it burns down, in which you fill in a form by filling it out and in which an alarm clock goes off by going on.

English was invented by people, not computers, and it reflects the creativity of the human race (which, of course, isn't a race at all). That is why, when the stars are out, they are visible, but when the lights are out, they are invisible.

And why, when I wind up my watch, I start it, but when I wind up this essay, I end it.

The above was written by someone who had the time to think of such craziness as shows up in the English language, not I.

It reveals some of the difficulties we have in our communications, just trying to keep them clear so those we are speaking to can understand.

The same, of course, occurs in writing, and, so, our web sites must be well thought out, not only for the message we want to say, but using the word we have chosen are we really getting the message across.

Something a lot of us don't take into account is that gay doesn't only mean sexual preferences. I was born in a time when that particular meaning was never attributed to the word.

Sometimes we forget there are regional differences in a country where a word may may be understood altogether different on each side of the continent. Now the internet has linked us all together, the ethnic, racial and cultural diversity makes it very important to select our words to be understood by the majority, at least, of our readers.

I have heard it said we should write as if we were addressing those with a Grade Six level reading skills.

It, by no means, infers that is the level of intelligence. It does mean we can communicate with the lowest common denominator. Additionally, we should all understand the purpose of communication is to get a message to someone else. Using words with which others are unfamiliar is no help to the cause.

There are two things that will have an outstanding effect on you upward mobility in a successful career, clear communications and an amazing memory. The two are linked.

From time to time we try to encourage the use of good communication skills, and, if you have been to The Pebble site you will see what a good memory can do for you.

Remember, Be Clear!

To your continued Success - - -

TECH TIPS

HTML Tips

Adding an Address Bar to Your Taskbar

On Windows 98 machines and up, (sorry, this won't work on
Windows 95) you can add an address bar to the gizmo at the
bottom of your screen that has the Start button on it. It's
kind of cool if you want immediate access to a resource on
the web.

Close any open programs so you have a clean taskbar to start
with. This isn't mandatory, but it makes for a less cluttered
example.

First, enlarge the size of your taskbar to about two or three
button sizes in height. That's three times the height of your
Start button. This gives you room to add the address bar. You
can fiddle with the size all you want. If you have a
Stradivarius monitor, it makes fiddling even easier. <groan>

**NOTE: Stradivarius... A kind of violin made by the Italian
craftsman Antonio Stradivari in the late seventeenth and early
eighteenth centuries. Those that still survive are considered
the finest violins in existence. And you thought this newsletter
was just about computers!

Moving on...

Next, right click a blank area of the enlarged toolbar space,
and select 'Toolbars' then click 'Address'. The address bar
will appear on your taskbar.

Move it around by passing your mouse cursor over the vertical
spacer-like gizmos that separate the Address bar from the rest
of the Taskbar. Now, here's how to use it...

To view the contents of your C: drive, just type 'C:' without
the quote marks. Up pops a window. Kind of neat.

To open Windows Explorer, type 'explorer' in the address bar.
Whoosh... there's Windows Explorer! That's neater yet.

To order pizza, type "Pizza Hut" into the address bar... then
listen for a knock at the door. Look! It's the pizza guy!

You didn't know your computer could do that, did you? I didn't
either. Awe... and I wanted pineapple on mine!

To get rid of the address bar, and the pizza guy, right click
a blank area of the Taskbar... go to Toolbars, and click
on 'Address' to remove the checkmark. The address bar is gone.

Oh, one more thing. The upside down triangle button to the
right of the address bar can be clicked for a history of places
you've been to, or typed in there. And you can type web site
addresses there, too. You know, "URLs". "WWWs". That kind of
stuff.

Have fun. Remember, computers are our servants. They're tools.
We are their masters. Unless of course you run a business using
a computer, like I do. Then it's just plain CRAZY because the
blame thing really DOES control my life!

Basic eBooks To Get Started
One problem many face when getting started with scripts is
most of the scripts assume you have a understanding of basic
concepts like Perl configuration, file permissions, script
uploading, HTML Forms and the like. Anyone who can design a
website can learn to work with scripts in a short amount of time
but the information required to get started is hard to find. Even
when it's available is often too briefly covered or too poorly
explained and too difficult for the newbie to understand.

The following ebooks are cheap and were not available when I
got started. They can save you a lot of time and effort
understanding the basic concepts required to use and install
scripts on your website. I would consider buying them in the
following order.

20 Unexpected Uses for Baking Soda
by Mary Ellen Pinkham

You probably have a box of baking soda deodorizing your fridge, but it
has lots of other uses that solve a variety of common problems.

Make a quick substitute for spackle. To fill in a small hole, mix a bit of
baking soda and a bit of white glue until you have a paste, then use your
fingers to ply the paste to fill in the hole.

Stop pool chlorine's turning your blond hair green. When you leave the pool,
rinse with 1/2 cup baking soda stirred into lemon juice. Wet hair, then pour
the mixture on top while it's still bubbling.

Clean chrome. Rub chrome with dry baking soda and a dry cloth.

Extinguish fires on the barbecue grill. You can douse a flare-up by sprinkling
baking soda on it; and since baking soda is of food-grade purity, you won't
contaminate the food.

Remove the odor of a spraying cat. Make a paste of baking soda and water, cover
area, leave for at least three hours but preferably overnight, then vacuum when
powder has dried.

Relieve pain of sunburn. Apply a paste of baking soda and water to soothe and
cool the area.

Clean (plastic) piano keys. Baking soda is a gentle abrasive.

Remove scuffs from vinyl flooring. A little baking soda on a damp sponge will
make them disappear right away.

Remove the sour milk smell from baby's plastic bottle. Fill it with warm water,
add a teaspoon of baking soda, shake it well and leave it overnight.

Polish the silver without elbow grease. Fill a non-aluminum pan with hot water,
place a small square of aluminum foil (5 inches or so) in pan, add baking soda
(1 teaspoon per quart) and bring to a boil. Drop silver in briefly and remove
with tongs. Wash with soapy water and rinse and buff to a gloss. (Not recommended
for figured pieces: it will remove shading, so fine silver may look like plate.)

Make cloudy iced tea clear again. Add a pinch of baking soda to the pitcher.

Prevent mildew in bathing suits. On a beach outing, bring along a large zippered
plastic bag containing 1/4 cup of baking soda. Put wet suits in, then shake the
bag well. The soda absorbs moisture and sour musty odors until the suits can be
rinsed or washed.

Clean corroded terminals. Make a paste of baking soda and salt. After the paste
bubbles up, wipe the area, then dry it.

Help with heat rash. After a lukewarm shower, use a cleaning product that doesn't
contain soap (such as Dove). Towel dry and put a paste of baking soda on any rashy
area. Leave it there as long as practical.

Keep your dishwasher smelling good when you're away. Sprinkle some baking soda
inside the dishwasher and leave the it open just a bit. It won't smell musty when
you return.

Substitute for other toiletries on a camping trip. You can use it as toothpaste,
as deodorant and as a balm for bug bites.

Make a "fishy" taste disappear. Soak your catch of the day in a quart of water to
which you've added a couple of tablespoons of baking soda. Leave for an hour, then
wash off and pat the fish dry.

Spell doom for slugs. Just sprinkle baking soda on them.

Get rid of a musty scent. If the clothes aren't completely dry when the dryer shuts
off and smell musty, sprinkle baking soda on them, then put them back in and turn
the dryer back on.

Clean crayon off a chalkboard. Just use baking soda on a damp rag to remove the wax
and make the board clean for chalking again.

A Free Agent Roadmap for 2003
by Paul Bednar As this year comes to a close, it's time to look ahead to 2003.The start of a new year is an exciting time and is an opportunity to begin with a clean slate. As you develop your strategic plan, consider the following items to ensure that the upcoming year will be a success.

1. Diversify your client base

This is especially important if the majority of your income is derived from one or two clients. You never know when a large or long-standing client will no longer need your services. Having many clients serves as an income insurance policy. In the event one client terminates a contract, you have other income sources.Look to target other companies within your industry or branch out to new industries.

2. Maintain your marketing efforts

With free agents entering the marketplace due to job cuts, there's a lot of competition out there. Spend one full day each week marketing your services. Either devote an entire day to marketing or spend a little time throughout the week. Consistent marketing prevents you from going a long time between clients.

3. Participate in a joint venture

This is when you join forces with one or more free agents to work on a client project. It is a great way to work on projects with other people, especially if they have different skill sets. Also, it removes some of the pressure from having to get all the business yourself. However, either have a working relationship with or get a trusted colleague's perspective about the other(s) with whom you'll be working. Remember, your reputation is involved too.

4. Develop another revenue source

Every free agent strives for consistent income but what happens when you hit an inevitable financial drought? Rather than raid your savings or tap other financial means, it would be easier if you had another income source. The extra cash flow would ease the financial strain in the rough times and build your safety net in good times. Some possible examples are writing articles, giving speeches and seminars, developing a new product, writing a book, and so on. You are only limited by your imagination.

5. Increase your personal network

As a free agent, you can never know too many people. Clients like to hire free agents they know or were referred from a trusted source. Increasing the people in your network should be a continuous process as some of your contacts retire, change jobs, and so on over time. Understand that relationships take a long time to build. However, the quality of these relationships can open many doors. A strong and well-connected personal network can be a great source of clients.

6. Keep yourself on a schedule

Being a free agent is hard work. In addition to client projects, you're responsible for all the business aspects such as marketing and administrative items. Be sure and allocate sufficient time for exercise, sleep, vacation, and leisure. Take advantage of the ability to set your own schedule so you can function at your best.

How To Draw A Landscape Map

http://doityourself.com/garden
Before you design or improve your landscape, the first step is to inventory what you have. The best way to do
that is to draw a base map of the site, accurately recording the size and location of permanent features.
Draw a rough map. On a large notepad, sketch out your yard, including buildings, large trees and shrubs, property
lines, fences, utility lines, paved areas, patios, pools, and other permanent features. Don't worry about accuracy yet.
Using a compass, find the direction of north and mark it on the map.

Measure permanent objects. Measure the features, such as house and pool dimensions, tree drip lines, spreads of
shrubs, and lengths of fences. Add the measurements to the rough map. Also measure and locate windows and doors,
as well as outside faucets, lights, and electrical receptacles.

Establish accurate locations. Using stakes and string, mark a straight line along a property boundary, starting at
one corner. Keeping the tape measure at a 90§ angle from the boundary, measure the distance from the boundary
to the nearest corners of the house, trees, and other objects on your map. Measure from other boundaries, too,
to confirm accuracy.

Transfer measurements to graph paper. With a ruler and pencil, transfer your measurements accurately to graph
paper. Use 1 inch to represent 4 feet for small yards, 1 inch to 20 feet for larger sites.

Make tracing paper overlays. Tape the base map to a table or board. Lay sheets of tracing paper over it and make
additional maps, each with a different theme, such as sun and shade patterns, slopes, views, gardens, and traffic patterns. Each map becomes a layer that adds detail to the base map but remains separate for clarity.

Tools and materials

Notepad or paper, at least 8« by 11 inches

Pencil and eraser

Ruler

Compass

Tape measure, at least 50 feet

Wooden stakes and string

Mallet to drive stakes

Protractor or steel carpenter's square

Graph paper, 11 x 14 inches or larger, 1/4 inch grid

Masking tape

Tracing paper, available in rolls

Soft pencil

Tips
Use tracing paper overlays and a soft pencil to sketch new landscape ideas and plans over your base map. Start
with loose scribbles and add accuracy as your plans take shape.

Make small circles, called registration marks, in the corners of your base map. So that the base map and overlays
can be accurately aligned, add corresponding marks on each sheet of tracing paper.

Why is the ocean salty?

Join scientists as they journey to the ocean bottom to map the sea floor, study underwater volcanoes and search the ocean floor for previously unknown life forms. When an expedition is in progress, visitors can get daily updates and may even correspond with the scientists.

Preventing Accidents at Home

From a young age we are taught by our parents to look both ways before
crossing the road. In turn we repeat those words of wisdom to our children.
However, this principle doesn't apply only to children or only to crossing
roads. This principle not only will prevent road accidents, but can also be
applied to the home and prevent accidents there. How so? When children are
taught to look both ways before crossing the road they are actually being
trained to see accident traps. As children grow up and become parents themselves,
they need to be well trained to see accident traps in the home.

The following is a list of some ways to prevent young children from being
hurt in the home:

  1. Make sure that all electrical outlets are properly covered, especially
those within reach of little ones. Throw away frayed electrical cords.
  2. Do not allow young ones to play with matches, lighters, broken or other
pieces of glass, or anything else that has sharp edges such as knives or
    scissors.
  3. Do not permit them to play with toys that, if broken, will make pieces
that can inflict cuts or choke the child.
  4. Place pots and pans on the stove so that the handles are pointing toward
    the center of the stove.
  5. Medicine, detergents, alcohol, aerosol sprays, and any other hazardous
chemicals should be kept out of the child's reach in an out of the way place.
Never place such in bottles that would normally be used for drinking or cooking
    purposes.
  6. Make sure that all sinks, bathtubs, and washing tanks are firmly attached
to the wall so that they cannot be easily tipped over by the child.
  7. When cleaning or polishing the floor, avoid using naphtha, gasoline, or other
flammable liquids. A spark from the polisher may set the fumes on fire.
  8. Make sure that there are no poisonous plants in the home.
  9. If you have to have firearms in the home make sure they are unloaded, locked
up somewhere, and when you take them out, handle them with extreme care. Best
not the keep firearms in the home.
  10. Prevent young ones from falling out of a window or down stairs by installing
a grate, a gate, or a bar. Remove any obstacles, keep the floor in good repair.
If you polish the floor and place carpeting on top, make sure the carpet is fastened
down. This way the carpet will not slide if someone runs across it.
  11. Drape cords should be out of reach of children.
  12. Keep at least one fire extinguisher in the home and make sure that anyone of
responsible age knows how to use it.
  13. Never leave a child in a bath tub unsupervised. Keep electrical appliances,
such as the radio, away from the bath tub or sink.
  14. When you warm up a child's food in the microwave remember that it can get hot
very quickly, even though the container may be just lukewarm.
  15. Keep children at a safe distance from a hot barbecue grill.

  16. Make sure the child knows never to run underneath a moving garage door.

  17. Your iron, including its cord, should be kept out of reach of the child.

  18. If your child has a toy chest, ensure that it is equipped with air holes and
hinges that prevent it from dropping all at once.
  19. Make sure the smoke detectors in your home are clean and checked regularly.
Replace the batteries once a year.
  20. Install a carbon monoxide detector in your home. Have your furnace checked from
time to time for carbon monoxide leaks.

If this list of the key hazard preventions is followed then the home can truly be a
haven for the parents and especially for the children. Remember the principle of
looking both ways before crossing the road. It is impossible to list every conceivable
accident in an article such as this one, but if we keep that principle in mind then we
can be trained to see accident traps and thus take the necessary preventive measures.

A HREF="http://doityourself.com/pets/nails.htm">
How to Clip a Dog's Nails
Clipping your dog's nails might be easier than you think.
Have a groomer or your veterinarian show
you how to do it. Most pet stores sell a special dog nail
clipper. When the blade is dull, you can replace
just the blade instead of buying a whole new clipper.

The blood supply to the dog's nail is called the "quick".
If your dog's nails are too long and you immediately
cut to the length you think they should be, you will
cut into the quick and cause your dog's nail to bleed.
Don't worry, you won't have mortally wounded Fido, but
the nail can bleed for quite some time and be rather
messy. Most people keep some styptic powder (available
at pet stores) on hand to cauterize the bleeding if necessary.

The trick to trimming dog toenails is to train the quick
to retreat backward. Remember, simply cutting a large
chunk of the dog's nail will only cause the nail to bleed.
Instead, use the following method to avoid cutting the quick.

Cut or file the dog's nails only a little bit every couple
of days. This will cause the blood supply to get shorter at the
same time as the nail is being shortened. When you get
the nail to the length you would like to maintain, clip every
few weeks or as often as necessary to maintain that length.
This will prevent the quick from growing too long and
prevent the nail from bleeding.

Why This Nurse Always Writes About Food ...Why
Doesn't She Stick To ...

Truly ...You Are What You Eat And Now It's Been
Documented Why You Should Care About The
Foods You Eat!
PART 3 of 3

I am sure you have heard the phrase "we start to die
as soon as we are born". It's true because our cells are
continually adjusting and reacting to our environment
...inside and outside.

So why do I continue to comment on healthy eating
habits and supplementation? Because, in my wellness
clinics, I often witness "natural aging". It is a REAL
pleasure to greet men and women in their eighties
and nineties who have already been out for their walk
either in the local shopping center at 7:00 AM or around
their neighborhood. They now come to the local
restaurant, which welcomes these seniors like special
friends, provides them with a healthy breakfast, and a
place for them to meet their buddies. I get to take their
blood pressures: maybe check their cholesterol or
glucose levels. In return, they offer me all kinds of tips
as to why they are so active and happy. Many still
have gardens and pets. They have a positive outlook
on everything, are tolerant of others, and smile a
whole lot. I feel so energized around them! And when
I look at them as a group, there isn't one person who
is what you would call grossly overweight. So staying
healthy, and mentally alert, is doable and a very realistic
goal. These habits have to start early in life because
once you get into a routine of some undesirable eating
and mobility habits, it takes a lot more energy to make
changes. Ease into health and it will make you feel so
much better that other changes seem natural and
appealing!

HEALTH TIPS

TrimLife Advanced Banner

Health Tip of the Week
by Dr. Earl Mindell

Neat Freaks Take Note-Dirt May Be Good For Your Child's Health
Now that most of the deadly diseases of childhood have been
eradicated in Western nations, more and more kids are
experiencing less severe chronic illnesses, including asthma,
allergies, eczema, and hay fever. While I'd take a runny nose and
itchy ey es over typhoid or polio any day, these chronic health
issues can put a serious damper on a kid's enjoyment of life. The
10.5 million Americans with asthma are often stuck using inhalers
and breathing treatments for years on end, or even for a
lifetime. Hay fever, which affects almost 25 million Americans,
may keep a child from running and playing outdoors and getting
the sunshine and exercise he needs.

It has generally been thought that keeping a house spic and span-
with air cleaners, spotless non-allergenic bedding, and other
measures to keep dust and dirt away from children-would help to
prevent allergic issues. For the past decade, however,
researchers have found that exposure to dust and dirt during
early childhood, especially in the first year of life, may
actually be protective. Such exposure is thought to somehow
"activate" aspects of immunity that keep allergy and asthma at
bay.

In a study from researchers at the Institute of Social and
Preventive Medicine in Basel, Switzerland, 812 children living in
rural parts of Austria, Germany, and Switzerland were evaluated.
The researchers compared children who lived on farms-where they
are constantly exposed to animal dander and bacteria from animal
waste-to children who did not live on farms. Samples of dust from
the children's mattresses were analyzed for endotoxin (substances
known to cause allergic irritation in sensitive people) content.
Blood samples were analyzed for markers of allergic inflammation.

Far more endotoxins were found in the farm children's bedding.
Higher endotoxin levels correlated with decreased blood markers
of allergic inflammation. The likelihood of asthma, hay fever,
and atopy (allergic skin irritations) was approximately halved in
farm children, and their immune systems did not respond
dramatically to those endotoxins.

In other words, their immune systems were better at discerning
what was actually a threat. Children need to be exposed to dirt
and animal dander. Remember this the next time you're kicking
yourself for not keeping your house totally dust- and dirt-free.

If you're a vigilant neat freak who scrubs every surface and
cautions your child or grandchild to stay out of the dirt, relax!
As long as the child is well-nourished and well-rested, his or
her body can handle truly harmful toxins, and the less harmful
ones will improve thier resistance against allergy.

Mindell can help you get into the best shape of your life.
