The Book of Genesis, Chapter 6

King James Version

Genesis 5.

The Book of Genesis

Return to Index

Chapter 6

1

And it came to pass, when men began to multiply on the face of the earth, and daughters were born unto them,

2

That the sons of God saw the daughters of men that they were fair; and they took them wives of all which they chose.

3

And the LORD said, My spirit shall not always strive with man, for that he also is flesh: yet his days shall be an hundred and twenty years.

4

There were giants in the earth in those days; and also after that, when the sons of God came in unto the daughters of men, and they bare children to them, the same became mighty men which were of old, men of renown.

5

And God saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.

6

And it repented the LORD that he had made man on the earth, and it grieved him at his heart.

7

And the LORD said, I will destroy man whom I have created from the face of the earth; both man, and beast, and the creeping thing, and the fowls of the air; for it repenteth me that I have made them.

8

But Noah found grace in the eyes of the LORD.

9

These are the generations of Noah: Noah was a just man and perfect in his generations, and Noah walked with God.

10

And Noah begat three sons, Shem, Ham, and Japheth.

11

The earth also was corrupt before God, and the earth was filled with violence.

12

And God looked upon the earth, and, behold, it was corrupt; for all flesh had corrupted his way upon the earth.

13

And God said unto Noah, The end of all flesh is come before me; for the earth is filled with violence through them; and, behold, I will destroy them with the earth.

14

Make thee an ark of gopher wood; rooms shalt thou make in the ark, and shalt pitch it within and without with pitch.

15

And this is the fashion which thou shalt make it of: The length of the ark shall be three hundred cubits, the breadth of it fifty cubits, and the height of it thirty cubits.

16

A window shalt thou make to the ark, and in a cubit shalt thou finish it above; and the door of the ark shalt thou set in the side thereof; with lower, second, and third stories shalt thou make it.

17

And, behold, I, even I, do bring a flood of waters upon the earth, to destroy all flesh, wherein is the breath of life, from under heaven; and every thing that is in the earth shall die.

18

But with thee will I establish my covenant; and thou shalt come into the ark, thou, and thy sons, and thy wife, and thy sons' wives with thee.

19

And of every living thing of all flesh, two of every sort shalt thou bring into the ark, to keep them alive with thee; they shall be male and female.

20

Of fowls after their kind, and of cattle after their kind, of every creeping thing of the earth after his kind, two of every sort shall come unto thee, to keep them alive.

21

And take thou unto thee of all food that is eaten, and thou shalt gather it to thee; and it shall be for food for thee, and for them.

22

Thus did Noah; according to all that God commanded him, so did he.

Hit's Don't Generate Sales, Qualified Customers Generate Sales

The Internet is a Funny Business. I am online over 12 hours
every day, researching and looking for additional ways to
promote my company. I see 1,000's of ads that promise your
traffic and hits will explode, but they say nothing about sales.
Guaranteed hits, millions of banners, email a billion people,
but nothing about making sales.

Now, it is assumed that the more hits and traffic you have, the
more sales you will make, and to an extent this can be true.
However just like any advertising, if you are hitting the wrong
people, it won't matter how many hits or how much traffic you
are getting.

If you are selling airplanes and all your advertising is going
to kids, you might get millions of hits, but no sales. Or, if
you are selling to kids, but all your traffic is coming from
AARP, you might get a few sales, but you will not get a solid
return on your ad dollars.

Five years ago, an eternity for the Internet, I was selling web
advertising for a local site. Without fail, the first words
from my clients were, How many hits are you getting?
Unfortunately. too many people still believe that a lot of
hits, means a lot of income. WRONG! Following is an analogy I
created that is as true today as it was 5 years ago.

If you have a traditional store and you sell shoes: Which would
you rather have in your store? 10,000 people who do not need
shoes and are only looking, or 100 people who need shoes and
are ready to buy? Obviously, you want the 100 people who are
ready to buy. Either scenario, you have to greet the people,
answer their questions, fit them for shoes, clean up after
them, etc. However, it makes more sense to do this for 100
people and make 9 sales, then 10,000 to make 9 sales.

With the Internet, you are not greeting each person or fitting
them, or cleaning up after them, etc., but you are taking time
away from yourself and your employees and you will have to
respond to questions. Maybe this is why so many sites say they
will respond to you in 48 - 72 hours. They are getting so
buried by hits and useless traffic, that they cannot take care
of their real and paying customers.

The Internet is a business and as a business, it is in your
best interest to treat your customers like people and take care
of them, so they feel wanted and will come back to your site
and buy again. Repeat customers cost you nothing-zip-zero-less
than 1, etc. Yet, because we want to generate hits and traffic
in the hope that we will get a .0001% buy rate, we continue
purchasing hits, and traffic and throw our ads out and hope
someone will respond.

STOP the madness and START better utilizing the Internet.
Before you spend one more dollar on hits or ads or traffic, ask
yourself a few questions and better utilize your advertising
dollars as well.

Who are my customers? age, sex, race, culture, income, etc.
Where would these customers be found? Ezines and if so which
ones, Chat rooms, message boards, other sites they will use.
What is my offer? Do I want to give something FREE to new
customers? How do I keep my previous customers coming back?
Specials, Discounts, Email newsletter, etc. What percent
response to I want to get? Hits vs. Sales You get the idea. Put
some thought into your online advertising.

Remember on the Internet, More is NOT Better and Hits Do Not
Generate Sales--Qualified Customers Generate Sales...

Content Doorway Pages Cross Population Traffic Producer.

By TrafficProducer
Traffic Producer
http://www.comparebargains.com/
Content Doorway Pages Cross Population Traffic Producer.

First a lot of users will know about doorway pages. For those who don’t this is a site with Keyword rich Meta Tags and Keywords rich pages that links to your main site. The idea is to have doorway pages that are very search engine friendly resulting in better rankings.

Doorway pages like this may have some use for search engines which don’t use humans to list sites as humans are likely to realise that the site is a doorway page and not list it, they may even block the main page.

There is a way round this, a way that is very likely to get you listed.

That is to construct Content Doorway Pages. Basically this is a separate site, with a different URL, that provides useful content. That is a proper website that is able to stand on it’s on merits. I would recommended Content that has very little or no relevance to your main page. For example take a look at A Great Portal this has links most of our sites. Note that while some have some relevance to each other some are non- relevant to each other.

You may be wondering why the non-relevance is recommended. You may think, “Surely it is better to have sites which do have relevance so that people are more likely to following links.” This is true but this can be achieved using other methods including exchange links with sites similar to yours.

The idea here is more about getting listed under different Keywords with search engines so that at least one of your sites is found. This site may have a few links to your main page but will provide other useful Content relevant to the Keywords.

For example using Yahoo (http://www.yahoo.com/) to search on “Compare Bargains” should return links to our Compare Bargains and Discounts site (http://www.comparebargains.com). Anyone clicking on this link will find useful links to Compare Bargains and Discounts as well as find links to our other sites.

Our Bargains and Discounts Site has a page for “Computer software” this also has links to “Free: Jigsaw puzzles to download and use off-line for free” (http://www.puzzles.ukfun.com/index.html). This is another site of ours, which has links to other sites of ours. Note that this page, and others, provides links to other sites outside, affiliated links to generate income in the case of links on this site. This give uses useful Content, meaning that users are more likely to stay bit longer and follow links i.e. the site is “Sticky” because of links to other sites.

So people searching on say “compare bargains” will find links to that site and if clicked on they will find links to our other sites.

Our other sites also have links back so that traffic is generated back to our other sites. Another example say using Excite Search to search on “We are Elvis fans” will return our Elvis Portal at http://www.weare.elvisfans.com this has links to some of our sites but mainly provides Elvis Fans with useful links. Therefore users searching for Elvis may find our "We are Elvis fans” Portal and therefore may follow links to our other sites. Just as users searching on “Compare Bargains” may find our Compare Bargains and Discounts site and follow links to our other sites.

I call this “Cross Population Traffic Producer” because each site stands in its own right, providing useful Content by itself while providing links to our other site. Traffic is generated backwards and forwards increasing visits. Try searching on “Cross Population Traffic Producer” and you will find our “Traffic Producer” site at http://www.solutions.ukdots.com/index.html Check out “Methods of Internet Advertising” on this site and see if you agree.

HIT ME WITH YOUR TRAFFIC STICK. 800,000 submission sites. Yahoo, Google, Excite, Hotbot, AltaVista, Lycos, InfoSeek, Directhit, Splat, Northernlight, Whatuseek, Webcrawler, Scrubtheweb, Rex, Overture, Infomak, Searchit, Snooper, Searchcity, Voila, Canada, Anzwers. PLUS lot's of other places (http://www.zip.ip3.com) More websites bring more traffic. Although there is a cost for hosting and maintenance. This is a good way to increase links to you and boost traffic. Will provide links back to your sites. You have control over content etc. Will cost for hosting of new website, website name, maintenance and promotion

Menus abound in all versions of Windows, but
Windows 2000 gives you the option of messing with
their looks.

Right-click on a blank spot on the Desktop and
select Properties from the popup menu. Click the

In the Visual Effects section, check the option
labeled Use Transition Effects For Menus And ToolTips.
Choose Fade Effect or Scroll Effect. Click OK.

Another option that's turned on by default is the
"personalized" menu. This just means that Windows 2000
takes notes on how often you use different entries on
your Start menu and the Favorites menu in Internet Explorer.
You can see all the entries by either keeping the mouse
still until the bottom of the menu spills out (a matter
of a few seconds) or by clicking the double arrowheads
at the bottom of the menu.

Personalized menus have their advantages because they can
save time. But you can disable the feature by taking the
following steps:

Right-click on a blank spot on the taskbar and select
Properties from the popup menu.

Click the General tab.

Remove the check mark from the box next to Use

Click OK.

HOME USES OF HYDROGEN PEROXIDE – H2O2

This inexpensive liquid in the brown bottle can
save you plenty of $$$.

Oxygen is the most abundant element on earth, comprising 45.6%
of the earth's crust and 20.95% of dry air, and is one of the most
vital elements to support life for plants, animals and man. Hydrogen
peroxide has been sold in drug stores for many years as an antiseptic
and a bleach. With a cost of less than .60 cents per 16 oz. bottle,
it is one of the world’s great "miracles" in a bottle.

Although it is not approved by the FDA or medical profession to be
taken internally, it has many uses in homes, farm and garden. How
many have you used?

  • Use 3% hydrogen peroxide in chilled water for washing chicken or
other poultry and beef or pork.

  • Cleansing for vegetables and salad greens: Add 1/4 cup 3% hydrogen
peroxide to a sink full of cold water. Wash vegetables thoroughly,
rinse with cold water and drain. This process prolongs freshness.

  • In the dishwasher or dishwater: Add 2 ounces of 3% hydrogen peroxide
to the regular washing formula. Your glasses will sparkle!

  • Marinade: Place meat, fish or poultry in a casserole (avoid using
aluminum pans). Cover with a diluted solution of 3% hydrogen peroxide.
Place in a loosely covered container in refrigerator for 1/2 hour.
    Rinse and cook.

  • Leftover tossed salad: Spray with a solution of 1/2 cup water and
1 tablespoon of hydrogen peroxide. Drain, cover and refrigerate.
    Eliminates use of chemical preservatives.

  • To freshen kitchen: Keep a spray bottle of 3% solution of hydrogen
peroxide in the kitchen. Use to wipe off counter tops and appliances.
It will disinfect and give the kitchen a clean, fresh small. Works
great in the refrigerator and lunch boxes.

  • Humidifiers & steamers: Use 1 pint of 3% hydrogen peroxide to a gallon
of water. This helps keep them clean too.

  • Laundry: Add 8 ounces of 3% hydrogen peroxide to your wash in place
    of bleaches.

  • Shower: Keep a spray bottle of 3% hydrogen peroxide in the shower.
Spray your body after washing to replace the acid mantel on your
    skin that soap removes.

  • Rejuvenating Detoxifying Bath: Add 6 ounces of 35% hydrogen peroxide
to a tub of water. You may increase up to 2 cups. Soak at least 1/2 hour.

  • Alternate Bath: Add 1/2 cup 35% hydrogen peroxide, 1/2 cup sea salt,
1/2 cup baking soda or Epson salts to water and soak.

  • Foot soak: Add 1 & 1/2 ounces 35% hydrogen peroxide to 1 gallon water
    and soak.

  • Pour a capful of 3% hydrogen peroxide in each of your ears after swimming
    to prevent ear infections.

  • Use 3% grade as an astringent on your face, neck and full body after bathing.
    Gets rid of acne FAST.

  • Use it in 3% grade in a spray bottle for cuts and soars. Spray on frequently
    and watch them disappear.

  • Use it as a douche in 3% grade.

  • Athlete's Foot: Soak feet nightly in 3% hydrogen peroxide until condition
    is improved.

  • Mouthwash: Use 3% hydrogen peroxide. Add a dash of liquid chlorophyll
for flavor if desired. Swish it around in your mouth for 1-2 minutes before
brushing. Watch how white your teeth become!

  • Toothpaste: Use baking soda and add enough 3% hydrogen peroxide to make a
paste. Or, just dip your brush in 3% hydrogen peroxide and brush.

  • Toothbrush: Soak your toothbrush in 3% hydrogen peroxide between brushings.

  • Pets: For small animals (dogs and cats) use 1 ounce 3% hydrogen peroxide to
1 quart water for their drinking water and bath.

  • House & Garden Plants: Put 1 ounce 3% hydrogen peroxide in 1-quart water.
Water or mist plants with this solution.

  • Sprouting needs: Add 1 ounce 3% hydrogen peroxide to one pint of water
and soak the seeds overnight. Add the same amount of hydrogen peroxide each
    time you rinse the seeds.

The Three Pillars Of Business Success
By John Colanzi

Internet businesses are springing up daily. Many first
time entrepreneurs are lured by the ease with which a
business can be started online and the dream of fast
riches.

The world of online business has fulfilled the dreams of
many an entrepreneur, but for many more it's become the
"Boulevard Of Broken Dreams."

Why is that?

Why have the dreams of so many new business owners
become nightmares, while others seem to strive
effortlessly?

That question haunted me for years. I would make a
couple of dollars and then hit a brick wall.

What was I doing wrong?

I finally realized, it wasn't what I was doing. It was
what I wasn't doing.

There are three key factors necessary to succeed in
business online or off. I call them the "three pillars
of business success."

Once I started paying attention to the "three pillars"
sales came easier and running my online venture became
less stressful.

Successful entrepreneurs follow these three rules.

Some do it consciously, others do it naturally.

So what are the three pillars of business success?

1. Knowledge

Your starting point on the road to success is knowledge.
You have to begin a study program. You must learn as
much as you can about your product or service.

You also have to begin a never ending study of how to
market and promote your product.

You have to learn in order to earn. As your knowledge
increases, so will your confidence.

2. War Chest

The second pillar is to evaluate your war chest.

How much money do you have to invest in your business?

Don't use money you need for maintaining your lifestyle.
Use money you won't miss.

Once you start dipping into money you need for everyday
expenses, the fear of loss will color your decisions.

Scared money never wins!

What if you don't have money you can afford to lose?

You have to spend your time.

Periodically evaluate your war chest and decide whether
to spend your money or your time.

3. Marketing Plan

The third pillar is your marketing plan. You have to
develop a systematic plan of marketing and promoting
your business.

Your marketing plan will be determined by your knowledge
and capital.

Having a system will take the guess work out of
building your business.

You won't have to agonize over every decision.

You'll be able to "pull the trigger."

Your marketing plan is your road map to success.

Build you knowledge base, evaluate your capital and
develop your marketing plan.

You've been given the "Keys." Its up to you whether or
not you use them.

Wishing You Success,
John Colanzi

A GARDEN FOR ALL SEASONS.(tips on vegetable gardening through the winter)

Author/s: Eliot Coleman

GARDENING ON THE BACK SIDE OF THE CALENDAR.

Like most fresh homegrown vegetable enthusiasts, I have never wanted the garden to end. That doesn't mean I longed for an endless summer; I love the pleasures of fall, winter and spring. I just wanted year-round, freshly harvested food on the table. Somehow I always knew there had to be a simple way to combine coldhardy crops with a little climatic protection during the colder times of the year. I am delighted to report that the results of 20 some years tinkering with this idea have proven me right. But first, some background on how it all came about.

I was inspired to mm my winter gardening dream into reality back in 1981, when I took on the job of farm manager at a private school in Vermont that grew most of its own food. In addition to rigorous academic studies, the school stressed practical experience on its farm as part and parcel of a student's education. But at the time I arrived, the reality of the farm experience for the students was mostly limited to livestock care. From the end of fall vegetable harvest in early October --when canning, freezing and the stocking of the root cellar were completed--until the start of spring planting in May, there was no production of fresh garden vegetables. I was convinced we could engage both the minds and stomachs of the students more effectively if they had more hands-on garden experience.

I would, however, be working against historical fact. The school year was originally designed so students would be in school only during the cold winter months (nongrowing season) and would be available to work on the family farm during the summer, when many hands were needed to help with the crops. Although this traditional schedule is modified slightly in some areas (such as in the potato-growing districts of northern Maine, where some schools still open in August and then recess for the potato harvest in September), it is too well established everywhere else to think of changing it. If I wanted the students to grow fresh vegetables, they would have to do it during the school year.

I was determined that it should be a serious, productive effort. I had little interest in providing a gardening experience that merely focused on protecting warm-season crops against frosts for a few struggling, unsatisfactory weeks into the fall. Nor did I wish to limit our production to the traditional hardy leftovers Of the summer season. I was keenly aware that if teen-agers were to be inspired, the effort would need more charisma than a field of Brussels sprouts. But budget constraints dictated `that a large, heated greenhouse was out of the question. So my first choice was the cold frame. It hag always been the simplest and least expensive climate moderator for the gardener of limited resources. Years ago, on a trip to Europe, I had seen large-scale commercial production of hardy winter vegetables in cold frames. And even though cold frames are no longer considered commercially viable, that matters little in a school or home garden setting where there's free land, free labor and where the spirit of hands-on group effort gets the job done.

Thus I set about devising a cold frame from which we could harvest all winter. I wasn't interested in highly technological modifications. Buried foam insulation, awkward reflective covers and space-age materials are not my style. I have a prejudice that simpler is better, especially when simpler has been time-tested. I knew that comparative investigations of different cold frame designs back in the 1970s showed the standard old-time model--a bottomless box made of two-inch thick planks, 12 inches high at the back and 8 inches high at the front and covered with glass panels--was still the best. So I copied the classic Dutch cold frame design I had seen many years before and that took care of technology. The next step was biology, the selection of the crops.

The vegetables that we canned at the school, mostly pickles and tomato paste, and those we froze--beans, broccoli, cauliflower, corn, eggplant, peas, peppers, zucchini--were principally the crops of summer. Most are "chilling sensitive," which is to say they do not appreciate temperatures below 50 [degrees] F. For winter harvesting we had to focus on their less popular "chilling resistant" compatriots. Many of these can survive winter's freezes as long as they have some protection.

Spinach was an obvious choice. So was the Asian crop, tatsoi. These are both highly nutritious greens that thrive in cold weather. I had often seen scallions and Swiss chard last well into the winter even in an unprotected outdoor garden. They were a great success in the cold frames, as were baby carrots planted on August 1 and covered in the fall. The carrots could be pulled all winter, and the cold soil storage made them as sweet as sugar. Vitamin-rich dandelions and turnip greens also made the cut.

That took care of some main crops; salad was next. Two salad crops I had seen in the European cold frames were claytonia, which farmers there called winter purslane, and mache, also called corn salad. Longtime staples of continental winter salads, these are two of the hardiest crops I know. Other strong choices are endive and escarole, as well as a cultivated Italian weed called minutina, known in English as buckhorn plantain. Heads of lettuce turned to mush after the weather got really cold, but we noticed that the leaves of young lettuce were very hardy. So we started harvesting lettuce and a number of other greens--including arugula, mustard greens and sorrel--as baby leaves on a cut-and-come-again basis to make a mixed-leaf or mesclun salad. Cutting salad leaves young worked so well that we soon used that style of harvest for all of our winter salads.

Our simple cold frame garden gave all these plants quite a lot of protection against the cold. On average, growing plants in a cold frame is equivalent to moving them to a climate one and a half USDA zones warmer, or about 500 miles to the south here on the east coast. A cold frame will usually protect the crops inside from freezing until the outdoor temperature goes below 25 [degrees] E As our fall went on and temperatures got well below freezing, we noticed a little frost damage on the leaves of some of the crops but nothing major. As long as we postponed the daily harvest until the sun warmed the temperature inside, the cold frame to above freezing (even the weak sun of a cloudy day worked well enough), the plants would thaw naturally with their roots in the ground and all was well. Still, there was much colder weather yet to come and we wondered how far into the Vermont winter we could continue the harvest. Moreover, would we be able to dig out the frames when the heavy snows arrived?

Dressing in Layers

At this point I remembered an interesting fact I had observed earlier. If the same crop was growing both inside and outside the cold frame, the outside crop suffered greatly from the dry, cold, late fall winds, even when temperatures were not below freezing. It seemed as if one major virtue of the cold frame was that it provided a windbreak. Well, I thought, when the weather outside gets too cold for us to be comfortable in just a windbreaker, we put a sweater on underneath. What if we added a second layer of protection for our plants? I had noticed a few years earlier, when I had stored an empty cold frame in an unheated, plastic-covered tunnel greenhouse, that the soil inside the frame hardly froze, even in the depths of winter. So we built a simple plastic-covered hoophouse over the cold frames and bingo! The great leap forward! Our plants moved another 500 miles to the south and had a snow-shedding roof over them to boot.

It is fascinating how one step forward will suddenly help focus your thinking about a new project. This was one of those steps. First, the simplicity of adding a second layer made us understand better what we were achieving. We were not doing battle With the cold of winter, as one thinks of doing in a heated greenhouse while trying to grow hot-weather crops, but rather we were creating a simple protected microclimate, sufficient for the needs of our hardy plants. It was like the difference between sitting inside by the fire on a cold day or being outside with enough layers of clothes on to keep you comfortable. Second, we began to pay attention to the fact that once past the middle of November most of the crops were not growing much anymore. They were just sort of hibernating and waiting for us to come and harvest them. In other words, we were not actually extending the growing season as you would with a heated greenhouse, we were extending the harvest season.

Those realizations really helped turn the comer on developing this concept. It was obvious that some of our crops were too small to be harvestable and some were too large to be as hardy as they might be for the winter days yet to come. I had guessed at the planting dates and I hadn't done too badly for a first try, but a lot more experimentation would be necessary in future-years to come up with the ideal September and October planting schedule for a really productive winter harvest. Over time, we would also find that some of the crops did well with two, three and even more successive planting dates. This allowed us to better spread out the harvest and take advantage of what slow growth did take place between mid-November and early February, ensuring us plenty to reap later in the year.

From that early beginning, the winter harvest concept blossomed. A few years' experience gave me more precise knowledge about planting dates and improved timing for adding the layers of protection. I devised a number of basic systems for moving small, plastic-covered tunnel greenhouses between two alternate sites. One design had wooden skids sliding on wooden mils, another had runners on the ground like a sled and a third had mils on the bottom of the structure and rolled on ball casters set in support posts. With a movable greenhouse, the crops could be planted out of doors starting in the early fall and then progressively covered with cold frames and finally the greenhouse. This helped avoid the pest, disease and soil nutrient problems often associated with permanent greenhouses. Plus, the uncovered area grew a soil-improving green manure, which we turned under before moving everything back to the original site the next fall.

Lessons in Latitudes

By 1990, when I left the job at the school to move back to my farm in Maine, enough people had heard about this "new" idea to bring out the naysayers. "You can't do that," they would say. "You may be able to give protection from cold but there isn't enough winter light for plants in New England. You need to be somewhere like the south of France if you plan to garden all winter."

Well, I've long been aware of the importance of light for plants. The key role of the sun for winter gardening was emphasized in an article I had read in a British gardening magazine. We associate Britain with the mild temperatures that make it in most respects a gardener's dream. But the author noted with a sense of resignation that despite the moist, temperate British winter climate, the short winter day length was an enormous obstacle to winter vegetable growing. Britain, he noted, is located "up there with the polar bears."

Polar bears? What does Great Britain have in common with polar bear country? As it turns out, quite a lot.

Take a quick look at a world atlas. You'll notice the southern tip of Great Britain sits just above the 50th parallel of latitude: If you follow that parallel across Europe to Asia and then to North America, you'll see it runs through cities we would consider the far north: Kiev, ukraine; Ulaan Goom, Mongolia; Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan; Seal Cove, Newfoundland. All of those places are some 70 miles farther north than the U.S./Canadian border, which follows the 49th parallel of latitude. If you go a few hundred miles even farther north to the heartland of Britain, you will be on the 54th parallel, which is the same latitude as Great Whale River, Quebec, on the shores of the icy Hudson Bay. Thus, an English vegetable gardener tilling a plot near Leeds or Manchester would experience the exact same winter day length as would a polar bear fishing in Hudson Bay. They are on the same "sun line," so to speak.

But the school in Vermont and my farm in Maine are not on a polar bear latitude. We are on the 44th parallel, the same latitude as Eugene, Oregon, and Oshkosh, Wisconsin. Across the Atlantic Ocean, believe it or not, the 44th parallel passes through the south of France and the Ligurian coast of Italy on the sunny Mediterranean. In other words, by being on the same latitude, we have the same day length and the same amount of winter sun as those solar paradises. I visited growers in southern France one January and none of the home or market gardeners I interviewed complained about inadequate sun. They all complained about the cold.

What was cold to those French gardeners, a January average temperature of 40 [degrees] F to 45 [degrees] F, seems mild to us here, where the January average temperature is 20 [degrees] F. Our colder temperatures probably explain why U.S. gardeners have never taken advantage of the adequate sun. Well, the double coverage of unheated greenhouse and an inner layer, combined with hardy crops, had solved the cold problem. And since we have as much sun as the south of France I wanted to see if I, could use these resources to do what the French market gardeners had been doing for years: I wanted to grow commercial vegetable crops all winter long.

The Commercial Winter Garden

If I was going to grow winter crops commercially, I had to find a less expensive and more efficient inner layer than the cold frames Of the prototype system. Cold frames are labor intensive to build and need to be manually vented so they won't overheat on sunny days, I ran trials using as inner layers various floating row cover materials held a foot above the soil on wire wickets. Although they did not provide quite as much climatic protection as the cold frames, they were self-venting, lighter in weight, easier to place over or take off the crops and much less expensive. My wife, Barbara, and I now use row covers rather than cold frames in our home garden system as well.

Similarly, I knew I wanted to grow in larger greenhouses and decided upon 30-foot wide by 100-foot long houses as the most efficient choice. I had never moved greenhouses that large before, but by using my earlier galvanized runner design, we were able to devise greenhouses that can be moved quite easily with a tractor (we pull them as if they were large sleds) and can be bolted securely to ground anchors when they are in place. We have also built one stationary greenhouse with a concrete floor at one end, where we wash and pack the winter-grown produce. That way we get to work in the warm, bright sun on any pleasant winter day and can take the edge off the chill with a small heater on days when it's cloudy.

Mondays and Thursdays are harvest days. We carefully wash all produce in tested deep-well water before sorting and packing carefully into our homemade native cedar boxes with our trademark "Seasonal Salads" branded into both ends. The stores and restaurants return the empty boxes to us when we arrive with the next order. We wash them in hot water and they are ready to use again. Our major crops are our baby leaf salad mix, freshly pulled winter carrots, spinach, turnips and turnip greens, leeks, radishes, scallions, tatsoi and extra early baby new potatoes in spring. We also grow storage crops like beets and celeriac in outdoor fields over the summer for storage in our root cellar and delivery over winter along with the fresh produce.

At the start of our foray into commercial winter vegetable production in unheated greenhouses, we boldly declared that we wanted to be the "backwards farm." We would produce salads and main course vegetables from October 1 to May 31 and then take a long summer vacation. It's amazing how close to that prediction we came. We do have an eight month, October to May, harvest season but our vacation time is limited to half of June and half of July before we have to get back to work preparing everything for the season to come. Still, we have no complaints. We're having a ball and the response from our customers is the most gratifying in all my years as a professional grower. People love the idea of having really fresh winter food harvested either that day or the day before on a local farm, instead of the usual week-old winter produce from faraway places.

Back to the Home Garden

In all of our fascination with the commercial potential of this idea, we haven't forgotten our home greenhouse. However, since we have easy access to our commercial crops, we now follow a simplified cropping program at home. We plant mostly the crops that we want to have on hand for a quick meal, especially if we get home after the sun is down and everything is frozen up. Both mache and tatsoi can be harvested when frozen solid and look perfectly normal after they thaw. So can scallions and leeks and, of course, our sweet baby carrots, which are hiding in the soil. Spinach and parsley will also recover adequately from being harvested frozen.

At whatever level you get involved in the winter harvest, you will discover some of the best food and easiest gardening you have ever experienced. Remember, the winter work is mostly harvesting. All our winter crops were planted during what we now call the "second spring," September and October. Furthermore, there are almost no weeds, the pests have all left for warmer climes, and there is no watering because evaporation is low and the soil groundwater table is high. As crops are harvested and empty spaces appear in our home greenhouse, we sow more seeds whenever the spirit moves us. This gives a wonderful sense of the home garden as an ongoing process or cycle, not the start-and-stop operation it was when we were just summer gardeners. We are forever released from the madness of canning and freezing that once overtook us each fall. And remember, we are doing this in Maine. Over 85% of the United States is farther south than we are and has more sun and warmer winter weather.

From fall through spring the amount of variety available from the winter harvest depends on where you live and the severity of your winter weather. Row covers, hardy vegetables and a succession of fall planting dates is probably all zone 9 and 10 gardeners need. In zones 7 and 8, a cold frame alone will guarantee bounteous harvests, but a simple two-layer system will be even better. For zone 5 and 6 gardeners, the double coverage of inner and outer layers will bring daily harvests that will both amaze and delight. In the frigid mountains of Vermont (zone 3) even the double-covered crops may get beat up a bit during the coldest weather, but will bounce back vigorously as winter recedes. So give it a try next winter. Start planting during the "second spring" and enjoy the freshest winter food you have ever eaten.

High-Powered Fun Offered on New Web Site: 'The Edison International Kids Power Lab'.

ROSEMEAD, Calif., Dec. 28 /PRNewswire/ -- Professor Kilowatt, Eddie Luz and Sunny Lee have some high powered fun waiting for kids, parents and teachers in the new virtual "The Edison International Kids Power Lab." Located on the Web at www.edisonkids.com, "The Edison International Kids Power Lab" provides a fun new way for families to learn about subjects ranging from energy heroes and electric safety to electric transportation.

According to Beverly Ryder, corporate secretary for Edison International, the Web site is a new communication channel Edison will use to reach out to families and the educational community.

"With our scholarship and other educational programs, we show our commitment to the communities we serve by investing in the future," says Ryder. "The Internet is an important part of that future. With the Edison International Kids Power Lab, we are offering important energy-related educational information in a fun, new way."

After logging on to the opening page of the new Web site, kids can enter one of three areas. Professor Kilowatt hosts "The Power Boost Quiz," and the "Energy Heroes" section. After successfully completing the interactive energy-related quiz, students receive an electronic diploma they can print and frame or attach to their refrigerator.

Eddie Luz, the Power Lab's lineman, sponsors safety information and "Great Links," a page full of links to other educational and kids-related Web sites. In the "Safety Race" kids can race against the clock to find and replace all the safety hazards located in a typical kitchen.

Sunny Lee takes kids for a spin in the "Cool Electric Cars" area of the site. The section features a short history of electric vehicles, information on the most common types of smog, as well as an overview of recent developments with the newest transportation alternative. Students can win an EV kit for their classroom by entering a contest on the site. To win, students must draw their version of the coolest electric vehicle. The most creative entries will be posted on the site each quarter.

Edison International plans to add an area to the site for teachers next year that will include downloadable lesson plans involving the environment, math and science. Special features will also be promoted on the site, starting New Years' Day with Edison's Rose Parade float, "The Great American Pastime." On Jan. 1, visitors will be able to log onto the site and link to live photos from either of two float cameras as they pan down Colorado Boulevard in Pasadena.

The "The Edison International Kids Power Lab" is another in a series of new Web sites that Edison International and Southern California Edison (SCE) will be launching. In January, Edison International will launch a new main corporate site, as well as sites targeted at job seekers, investors, and the media. And SCE will offer new online service transactions at its Customer Service Center Web site (located at www.sce.com). Customers will be able to start and disconnect service, request billing history and conduct other service-related business online.

Based in Rosemead, Calif., Edison International is the parent company of Southern California Edison, Edison Mission Energy, Edison Capital, and Edison Enterprises.

Giving Yourself a Break Finding the Ease in Parenting.

Author/s: Aleta Koman

Many people leap into parenthood with an impulsiveness they'd never allow in any other aspect of their lives. But, as we know, parenting requires enormous work, time, energy, maturity, and selflessness.

This capacity for selfless behavior is a core component of the human personality, but our culture often stresses its polar opposite - personal gratification, a "me-first" attitude that doesn't square with the requirements of parenthood. Many of parenting's satisfactions are subtle; some occur after long periods of waiting; most of them are internal. What makes parenthood delightful is the joy of loving, the joy of giving, the joy of nurturing. Make the commitment, again and again.

ADJUST YOUR ATTITUDE

* Focus on Process, Not Product. Don't be obsessed with end results; instead, emphasize the experience of simply doing what you're doing.

* Tolerate Disorder. If you can't tolerate a degree of benign disorder, parenthood will drive you nuts. Try not to be too rigid.

* Deal Openly with Guilt. For parents, guilt goes with the turf; it's easy to feel you're somehow short-changing your child. Yet guilt serves no purpose and generally complicates any situation.

* Prioritize. The key to sanity is reducing the number of activities. Simplify your schedule. Make sure to pad in time for transitions.

NURTURE YOURSELF

Being a parent is probably the least selfish aspect of your life. But focusing intently on your children may prompt you to lose yourself in the shuffle. You can't run on empty; you need to nurture yourself as well as your children.

* Lower Your Standards. If you can lower your standards selectively, you'll ease the pressure you feel to succeed in every way all the time. Giving yourself a break will boost your self-confidence, which in turn will benefit your kids.

* Improve Your Skills. This recommendation seems to contradict the previous suggestion, but parenthood introduces a need for an enormous variety of skills - baby care, communication, logistical planning, cooking, and so forth.

Many of these skills can be improved with practice.

* Seek Solitude. Obtaining time alone isn't easy, but even the briefest solitude can help mend frayed nerves.

* Seek Company. This isn't a contradiction: in addition to time alone, you may need more people in your life. Seek good company: relatives, friends, backup care, a parental support group, or an organized playgroup can lighten your parenting load.

* See Parenthood as a Spiritual Path. Many religious traditions, including Judaism, Christianity, and Buddhism, uphold that attending to others' needs can foster self-fulfillment.

COUPLES: WORK TOGETHER - BUT ACCEPT YOUR DIFFERENT PARENTING STYLES

* Accept the Differences as a Net Gain. Researchers have found that men and women parent their children differently. Children generally benefit from both parents' styles.

* Do Not Undercut Your Partner. Sometimes one parent feels so strongly about doing things a certain way that he or she inadvertently undercuts the other parent. Give each other room to experiment, learn, and grow. Validate and encourage one another.

* Divide Up Chores in Advance. Map out responsibilities. Make lists outlining chores, who's performing them, and deadlines. Share tasks whenever possible.

* Make Time for Couple Time. This is the relationship that is the foundation of your family. Set aside at least two hours a week to nurture one another as partners. Pay attention to each other, listen closely, and find time for your sexual relationship.

Go at Your Child's Pace

* Let Your Kid Be a Kid. Many parents misperceive what kids can do at particular developmental stages. Don't push too hard, and don't rely too much on what others are doing - you know your child better than any manual or developmental grid ever will.

* Set Limits. Letting your kid be a kid does not mean that you avoid setting appropriate limits; on the contrary, limit-setting is crucial. Gentle discipline and guidance will help your child grow into a responsible adult.

* Make Time for Play. Too often adults see play as frivolous activity, but this is how children learn, relate to others, discharge stress, and explore the world.

* Celebrate the "Mundane." Emphasize the importance

of everyday activities. Rather than signing your child up for lessons and special activities, just spend more time together.

MAKE YOUR HOME A HAVEN

Try to create a peaceful, relaxed environment at home, a calm place where children can unwind, disengage from their own demanding lives, and enjoy themselves and their family members without a lot of distraction.

* Downplay Structures and Schedules. Let your children take more substantial control of what they want to do. Playing alone, hanging out with friends, reading, or even staring out the window are all important.

* Expect the Unexpected. One of the things children teach parents is to be "in the moment." You can never truly predict what they'll need, or when. Go ahead and make plans, but be prepared to reschedule.

* Engage in Spiritual Practices. If your family is part of a religious tradition, take time to participate in its family-oriented or community activities. If you have no ties to organized religion, consider practicing some kind of independent spiritual activity - doing yoga, meditating, creating art, practicing or listening to music, or contemplating nature.

* Disengage from Compulsive Consumerism. The constant pursuit of material well-being tends to intensify stress within most families. Your family does not need more gadgets, goodies, and belongings. Make do with what you already have. Focus on being rather than buying.

Above all, savor what you have. As an old saying puts it, "The days are long, but the years are short." The child who so recently learned to walk will be off to college sooner than you can imagine. Watch your children closely; listen carefully; open your heart to who she is and what she feels. There is nothing more challenging, exhilarating, and fulfilling than to look after your children with love, laughter, and wonder as you watch them - and yourself - grow.

Exotic pets need annual checkups, too. .

Author/s:

Pet owners have lots of love for their animals, no matter if they have scales, fur, beaks, or pouches. Frequently, though, people who own nontraditional pets, including exotics, don't plan for regular wellness visits as do cat and dog owners, cautions Lori Corriveau, a veterinarian at the Wellness Clinic in Purdue University's School of Veterinary Medicine, West Lafayette, Ind.

"We often see nontraditional pet owners wait until their pet is sick before they ever bring it to a veterinarian. People in the veterinary profession want pet owners to know that we care for more than just cats and dogs. Often, pet owners are not aware that this kind of care is out there for their snakes, hamsters, or parakeets." Nontraditional pets, which are anything other than a cat or dog, can include rodents such as mice, guinea pigs, rats, hamsters, gerbils, or degus, as well as birds and reptiles. Other popular nontraditional pets are rabbits, ferrets, sugar gliders, prairie dogs, pot-bellied pigs, and frogs.

Some people may not take the animal to see the veterinarian because it is easier to replace a $5 hamster than pay for a chronic or life-threatening condition, Corriveau indicates. In contrast, she has seen the owners of a beloved pet rat invest more than $1,000 for its care. Regular wellness visits can prevent greater health problems and, over the long term, keep medical costs down. "Many nontraditional pets, especially small mammals, are prey species. These animals often don't exhibit signs of an illness to prevent displaying their weaknesses. It may be too late when they show their symptoms. Any exotic animal exhibiting signs of illness should be seen by a veterinarian as soon as possible."

Wellness visits can help a variety of animals. For example, if a guinea pig is brought in regularly, the veterinarian can analyze its diet to determine if the animal is being fed adequate amounts of vitamin C. Guinea pigs are prone to scurvy, which can be fatal. Some guinea pig pellets may not contain enough vitamin C, and pet owners can be instructed on how to handle food properly so it is not damaged by moisture or sunlight.

"Iguana owners often feed their reptiles a diet only of crickets," Corriveau notes. "However, iguanas really are herbivores, and they need leafy green vegetables as a staple of their diet." Reptiles kept indoors don't get enough ultraviolet light, which is essential for their calcium utilization and the prevention of a condition called metabolic bone disease.

Corriveau explains that many parakeet owners rarely bring these smaller tropical birds in for visits, but the trip can help prevent intestinal parasites and liver disease as well as ensure normal gastrointestinal bacteria levels and proper beak and feather growth. During regular veterinary visits, owners also can learn about hygiene and other care issues, such as if a pet requires any vaccinations.

Potential nontraditional pet owners can benefit from a visit with a veterinarian before a new one is selected, where husbandry and care issues that are special to nontraditional pets can be reviewed, as well as the difference between pets and wildlife. Moreover, research can expose pet owners to zoonotic issues--animal diseases that are contagious to humans.

Boost your brain power: herbs to improve your memory and mental acuity.(The Herbalist)

Author/s: Kathi Keville
Part 1 of 5

I SPEND MUCH of my time writing, which demands a lot of concentration. Often, while straining to recall some elusive fact, I reach over to pinch a leaf of the rosemary plant that sits next to my computer; I find that just a sniff usually is enough to bring back the information. Some might think this is downright odd, but it actually carries the weight of historical precedent. Many years ago, I learned that renowned 17th century herbalist Nicholas Culpeper suggested rubbing rosemary leaves on the temples or brewing them into a tea to "help a weak memory and quicken the senses." I tried it and have been a devoted fan of this brain-enhancing herb ever since.

Rosemary isn't the only herb with a long-held reputation for improving your smarts. For example, the Pents'ao, an ancient Chinese compendium of herbal lore, recommended ginseng for "benefitting the understanding," and in India, the herb gotu kola is a traditional brain tonic so highly regarded that it's called brahmi, or "of the highest order."

The ability of herbs to improve mental capacity isn't just folk wisdom; modern clinical studies have found that the "four Gs"--gingko, Panax ginseng (which includes Korean, Chinese and American ginsengs), Siberian ginseng and gotu kola--can indeed enhance concentration, aptitude, alertness and even intelligence. Scientists haven't discovered all the ways herbs increase brain power, but we do know that ginkgo, Panax ginseng and Siberian ginseng increase the activity of some of the brain's neurotransmitters, chemicals that transmit messages from one nerve cell to another. Some herbs--such as rosemary--work their magic through their fragrance alone, while other herbs are most effective when ingested as a tincture, tea or capsule. One advantage that all these herbs have over our culture's favorite stimulant--caffeine--is that they don't overstimulate the adrenal glands and thus don't create the adrenaline rush that can lead to the jitters. In fact, both Panax ginseng and Siberian ginseng are known as herbs that can stabilize the adrenals.

HERBS FOR EATING OR DRINKING

ONE OF MY FAVORITE WAYS to take brain herbs is to combine them in a tincture, a potent liquid extract; I often take it during long hours of lecturing to herb students. One evening I noticed my students were beginning to droop, so I passed my tincture around the class. Maybe it was just a placebo effect, but they perked up in only 15 minutes, asking far more questions than usual. Three of these students--one in her 20s, one in her 30s and one in his 40s--were also attending college at the time. After that herb class, they decided to take herbal brain-boosters daily; for their final exams, they also dosed up heavily with

one or two droppersful about an hour beforehand, and half a dropperful every half hour during the test. They reported a big difference in their ability to stay alert, and they didn't feel as drained afterward. Obviously, this wasn't a controlled study--but all three graduated with honors!

SOFT DRINKS.(health aspects)(Brief Article)

Author/s: Barbara Ferguson Kennedy

Worse than you thought

Everyone knows soft drinks aren't good for you, but new research strongly suggests they're even worse than anyone realized. Nonetheless, American teenagers are consuming record quantities of it.

"Many teens are drowning in worthless sugar water," says Michael Jacobson, executive director of the Center for Science in the Public Interest. The average can of soda contains approximately 8 tablespoons of sugar.

New research adds weight to Jacobson s words. Harvard School of Public Health professor Grace Wyshak recently found that: Ninth and 10th - grade girls who sipped soda were found to be three times more likely to break bones than those who quenched their thirsts with other drinks.

Worse, her study found that physically active girls who drank colas were five times more likely to break bones as physically active girls who abstained from carbonated beverages. Wyshak believes the phosphoric acid in colas may interfere with the body's ability to use calcium.

Carbonated soft drinks contain high amounts of phosphates. These cause the body to eliminate calcium as the phosphates themselves are excreted, even if calcium must be taken from the bones to do this.

Wyshak's study is just the most recent giving soda a sour taste. Her latest report confirms her earlier research associating carbonated beverage consumption with bone fractures in girls and postmenopausal women. A 1999 South African study warns that cola may exacerbate kidney-stone problems. And a growing body of psychiatrists' work over the last decade says the caffeine in soda is the most likely culprit in children's inability to sleep, concentrate, and stay focused on a task.

Nutritionists, meanwhile, warn that sugar in soda seems certain to be swelling America's problem with obesity and the concurrent rise in diabetes. Recent research has found that half of American adults and two in five American children are overweight.

But the soda companies aren't looking for immediate profits, says Andrew Hagelshaw, executive director of the Center for Commercial Free Education. "It's all about promoting ... an addiction to caffeine and sugar and to a particular brand name."

Soda manufacturers claim they just add caffeine to soda to enhance flavor.

A new Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine taste study, however, supports the notion that caffeine is added to soda to addict drinkers.

Only 8 percent of regular cola consumers detected a flavor difference at the caffeine concentration found in popular colas, the study found.

Researchers concluded: "The high consumption rates of caffeine-containing soft drinks are more likely to reflect the mood-altering and physical dependence-producing effects of caffeine as a central nervous system-active drug than its subtle effects as a flavoring agent."

"The picture that's painted is that kids are walking around shaking because of soft drinks at school, and I think it's blown out of proportion," says Phillips.

In 1999, San Francisco's school district banned exclusive contracts for soda and junk food, but few areas have followed their example.

Teenagers in the US now drink twice as much soda as milk, a reverse of figures noted 20 years ago, according to a report from the Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI), the nonprofit consumer advocacy group based in Washington, DC.

According to the new report -- called "Liquid Candy"-- the average soda consumption among teenage males between ages 13 and 18 who drink soda is three or more cans a day, and 10% drink seven or more cans a day. Of 13- to 18-year-old girls who drink the beverages, the average intake is more than two cans a day, and 10% of those teenagers drink more than five cans a day. CSPI officials are calling for reforms to lower soda consumption, "including more water fountains, sodafree schools, and health-education campaigns funded by state taxes on soda," according to a statement.
