The Book of Genesis, Chapter 7

King James Version

Genesis 6.

The Book of Genesis

Return to Index

Chapter 7

1

And the LORD said unto Noah, Come thou and all thy house into the ark; for thee have I seen righteous before me in this generation.

2

Of every clean beast thou shalt take to thee by sevens, the male and his female: and of beasts that are not clean by two, the male and his female.

3

Of fowls also of the air by sevens, the male and the female; to keep seed alive upon the face of all the earth.

4

For yet seven days, and I will cause it to rain upon the earth forty days and forty nights; and every living substance that I have made will I destroy from off the face of the earth.

5

And Noah did according unto all that the LORD commanded him.

6

And Noah was six hundred years old when the flood of waters was upon the earth.

7

And Noah went in, and his sons, and his wife, and his sons' wives with him, into the ark, because of the waters of the flood.

8

Of clean beasts, and of beasts that are not clean, and of fowls, and of every thing that creepeth upon the earth,

9

There went in two and two unto Noah into the ark, the male and the female, as God had commanded Noah.

10

And it came to pass after seven days, that the waters of the flood were upon the earth.

11

In the six hundredth year of Noah's life, in the second month, the seventeenth day of the month, the same day were all the fountains of the great deep broken up, and the windows of heaven were opened.

12

And the rain was upon the earth forty days and forty nights.

13

In the selfsame day entered Noah, and Shem, and Ham, and Japheth, the sons of Noah, and Noah's wife, and the three wives of his sons with them, into the ark;

14

They, and every beast after his kind, and all the cattle after their kind, and every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth after his kind, and every fowl after his kind, every bird of every sort.

15

And they went in unto Noah into the ark, two and two of all flesh, wherein is the breath of life.

16

And they that went in, went in male and female of all flesh, as God had commanded him: and the LORD shut him in.

17

And the flood was forty days upon the earth; and the waters increased, and bare up the ark, and it was lift up above the earth.

18

And the waters prevailed, and were increased greatly upon the earth; and the ark went upon the face of the waters.

19

And the waters prevailed exceedingly upon the earth; and all the high hills, that were under the whole heaven, were covered.

20

Fifteen cubits upward did the waters prevail; and the mountains were covered.

21

And all flesh died that moved upon the earth, both of fowl, and of cattle, and of beast, and of every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth, and every man:

22

All in whose nostrils was the breath of life, of all that was in the dry land, died.

23

And every living substance was destroyed which was upon the face of the ground, both man, and cattle, and the creeping things, and the fowl of the heaven; and they were destroyed from the earth: and Noah only remained alive, and they that were with him in the ark.

24

And the waters prevailed upon the earth an hundred and fifty days.

Genesis 8

Beating the Night Terrors

One of the scariest things about being self-employed is wondering where your next paycheck will come from. Here are some smart soloists who never have to look far when looking for new clients.

From: 1099| October 1999 By: Judy Fireman

It's the rare and perhaps non-existent independent professional who doesn't devote a good deal of time to hustling new business. That 3 o'clock in the morning fear, "Where will my next assignment come from?" is too familiar to all of us. (Cold comfort: Fortune 500 CEOs worry where their next big revenue source will come from, too.) In the best of times, the future is always lurking. Here's the good news: when you get those middle-of-the-night terrors, you can look to your past for relief.

Getting business from old colleagues is the most common way that an IP starts a solo career. Typically, you believe that you can establish a business on two building blocks: your acquired (or natural) skill set and the prospect of capitalizing on your past connections. That's how Jan Gobel, who recently began publishing greeting cards, is building his business: "I sat down and went through customer lists from my previous lives and wrote a personal letter announcing my new venture," he says. "My current sales reps are also contacts from the past. Together, we are building on our histories together. All those old relationships have formed the foundation of my independent venture."

While Gobel's work history might have provided him with a wider network of pre-existing customers than most of us can muster, his initial reliance on former colleagues is common. "My first client was someone I had worked with a while ago," says electronic-commerce consultant Elle Tracy. "Then I got lucky and another came along. My business is growing nicely, and I now have the luxury of connecting with absolute strangers." To foster a general sense of community among her colleagues, Tracy has recently organized a 'breakfast club' of like-minded IPs who meet once a month to swap information and leads.

The percentage of work IPs receive from old colleagues varies. Cheryl Long, who has been in business for herself for eight years, creates and manages promotional programs for magazines. She says that only about 20 percent of her business comes from old colleagues, a proportion she says she's happy with at this point in her career. Still, Long makes the effort to nurture old relationships, in part by occasional visits to her former workplace . "I find that just being in the halls of the company where I used to work puts me in contact with new possibilities," she says. "People see me and remember projects they need to have done."

Lila Gault, a marketing consultant to the food and wine industries, is much more dependent than Long on past coworkers. "About 80 percent of my business comes from people I have worked with in the past, or from people who are familiar with work I've done for others," she says. "Friends of friends say, 'Let's call Lila. Didn't she do a great job for what's-his-name?'" Doing repeat business with old clients obviously simplifies the process of pitching new business. "I'm thrilled when an old client calls," says Gault, "because it means I can concentrate all my energies on creating good programming. I don't have to spend a lot of time selling myself in."

Maintaining old ties -- business or personal -- clearly makes good sense. "I've been working in the online world for a long time, and I hope many old friends from there join me in the e-commerce end of the industry," says Tracy. "Working with old friends makes 'going it alone' feel safer. I like having friends on the frontlines beside me."

After years of working on staff in various museums, Zette Emmons went out on her own as a curator and exhibition coordinator. She makes a point of attending show openings and keeping in touch with her many contacts in the museum world. "I'm extremely gregarious, so I know a lot of people in many different museums, and I try to keep up with lots of them. I get virtually all of my business from friendly calls to old colleagues, as well as from a few desperate, begging, and whining calls too."

Getting new work isn't easy. You've got to work the phones and take advantage of every chance encounter, but don't forget to mine all those old relationships. In the middle of the night, when you're certain you've hit rock bottom and you'll never find another piece of new business, get up and go through your address book one more time. It holds gold; you just have to uncover it.

INTERNET TIP

Web Site Credibility: 10 Simple Guidelines

By Ethan Woods Copyright © 2003

Take a moment to picture the following scenario. You’re looking online to purchase a DVD player. You type “DVD Player” into your favorite search engine and the result is a list of thousands of companies that sell DVD players. You click on the first link listed and are taken to an online merchant selling the very DVD player you were looking for. The price is reasonable and shipping is included; however, you decide to check out another merchant to see if you can find a lower price. You go back to your search engine results and follow the second link listed. Again, you’re taken to a merchant selling the DVD player you’re looking for, but this time the price (shipping included) is $50 less.

How do you choose between the two merchants?

All things being equal you would choose the merchant offering the lower price. However, what if the lower-priced DVD player was being sold on a web site that just didn’t look very professional to you? What if you found the layout of the web site to be confusing? What if you noticed a lot of misspelled words in the text of the pages? What if many of the links were broken and images were missing? What if you couldn’t find any contact information for this merchant? Would any of these issues influence your decision to buy?

Research shows that in this case the majority of online buyers would purchase the more expensive DVD player because the credibility of the merchant selling the lower- priced product is in question. Consequently, you see how crucial it is for your web site to be perceived as credible.

Guideline 1: Make it Easy to Verify Content on your Web Site.

If your web site makes the claim that you provide excellent customer service, provide quotes with identifying information (with permission) of past buyers or clients speaking of your excellent customer service. If the local newspaper voted your business as best online merchant in 2003, then provide a link to the article or cite the newspaper in which the article appeared. The basic rule here is to be able to “prove” to your visitors that the information shown and claims made on your web site are real and not just fictitious marketing ploys.

Guideline 2: Show that a Real Organization Exists Behind your Web Site.

Visitors to your web site want to be assured that they’re not dealing with some shadowy figure who may run off with their money. Would you feel comfortable submitting your credit card information to a merchant in which you couldn’t track down? Increase the credibility of your web site by including the physical address of your business, including telephone number.

Guideline 3: Highlight Expertise in your Organization.

Convince visitors that you and your associates posses the know-how and skills necessary to provide the products or services you offer. If you or others in your organization have specialized training or education that’s related to your products or services, make that information known on your web site.

Guideline 4: Show that People Stand Behind your Web Site.

With today’s advances in computer technology, it isn’t uncommon to come across a fully-automated online business. Who’s doing all the work? Being able to show that living, breathing humans are behind your web site will increase the credibility of your web site (and business). You might add a page to your web site that features a particularly hardworking employee each month. At the very least, you might want to list department heads or supervisors (with pictures) on your web site contact page. This guideline is perhaps most important if you have a web site that is fully- automated (or appears fully-automated).

Guideline 5: Make it Easy to Make Contact.

Don’t give visitors the impression that you have something to hide. Make your contact information available and make it easy to find. At a minimum every web site should have a “contact” page that lists your physical address, telephone numbers, and email addresses.

Guideline 6: Design a Professional-looking Web Site.

This is a very common mistake for many small- and medium- sized businesses. Typically the web site is designed and maintained by the office manager or other employee with little or no real experience in web design. They’re told to purchase a popular web design software package, learn how to use it, and design the company web site. Often the result is a vertically “stacked” web site that features lots of animated gifs, randomly placed images and flashing or scrolling text. Don’t be lured into thinking you will save thousands of dollars by designing your web site in-house with novice “web designers.” Lost revenue and sales leads from visitors who left your web site because they did not perceive it as credible will far exceed your initial savings.

Guideline 7: Make Your Web Site Easy to Use.

Visitors to your web site are there for a reason; they want to purchase something or they want to learn more about your products or services. They will become irritated (and leave) if they are forced to figure out how to navigate your web site. Keep the web site layout consistent and clear. Avoid moving your navigation menu to a different location on each page of your site and avoid changing the look of the navigation menu from page to page.

Guideline 8: Update Content Often.

This is another common mistake made by small- and medium-sized businesses. Because business owners know their business should have an online presence, they quickly have a web site created and uploaded to the Internet. However, they rarely (or never) keep the web site content updated. This lack of concern over the content on your web site makes visitors perceive you and your business as less credible.

Guideline 9: Use Promotional Content Sparingly.

Web sites filled with advertisements are viewed as less credible than web sites with little or no advertising. In an attempt to increase search engine rankings and generate additional revenue, many web site owners join referral programs. The result is a web site inundated with banner ads cluttering your web site and linking your visitors to other web sites. If your intent is to generate revenue through referral programs, you should create a web site separate from your company web site. The goal of your company web site should be to sell products or services and market your business.

Guideline 10: Avoid Errors.

It doesn’t seem like a big deal on the surface, but errors seriously detract from the credibility of a web site. The most common errors are typos, misspellings, and broken links. Remember, your web site is an extension of your business. If grammatical errors and broken links reduce the credibility of your web site, then the credibility of your business is also reduced.

Research studying what makes web sites credible to the online public has become increasingly important to wise business owners (and good web designers). If visitors to your web site do not perceive it as being credible they will not perceive your business as credible. Web site credibility is an issue that precludes thousands of online businesses from reaching their online sale and marketing potential.

September's Monthly Organizing Checklist

____ Go through sock drawers and get rid of any solo socks that have lost their mates, or put those solo socks in a plastic bag and use them for quick dusting.

____ Now that the weather is getting cooler, take the time to declutter your garage. Sort tools, sporting equipment, lawn supplies, gardening tools, car-care products and so on, getting rid of anything you no longer need. Call your city sanitation department to find out how to get rid of old paint, pesticides and other chemicals. Sweep and clean the floor, and make room to put the car inside if your garage has been too stuffed to do so this past summer. Do it in one weekend, or break up the job into the 4 available Saturdays in September--a few hours at a time. Get the whole family involved.

Why spend time and energy creating a filing system, when it's already done and waiting for you to use right now? Check out the fileWISE® instant filing system.

____ Set up a bill paying area. Keep a set of bill paying supplies--your bill paying organizer, a calculator, pens, pencils, your checkbook, stamps, envelopes and address labels--in one defined place. Next time you want to pay bills, you'll be done in a jiffy.

____ Make a memory box. The longer you live, the more memories you're going to have. If you're not careful, you can fill your home to the brim with your memories, and you won't have space for anything else. Have one or two plastic containers to store your memorabilia. It's then time to determine what you truly wish to keep, and what you can do without. When these containers are full, the rule is to remove and get rid of, or give away, one item before you put another item inside. This will ensure only the most precious memories are stored in your Memory Box(s).

Keeping on top of everything going on in your life is easy, when you have the Get Organized Now! Easy Organizer. Now available in both print and digital PDF format.

____ Start getting your beauty sleep. The people with the highest productivity are always those who catch their full forty winks each evening. Determine what time you have to wake up in the morning in order to arrive at work or school on time. Then, backtrack a minimum of 7-8 hours so you know what time you should be in bed, and sleeping.

____ Invite a neighbor or two over for lunch, potluck dinner or simply a cup of tea. Sometimes a good friendship and warm conversation can be found no further than your own backyard.

Want over 1,300 great ideas for getting organized? Check out my book, Finally Organized, Finally Free. Now available in both print and digital PDF format.

____ Celebrate the back-to-school season by writing a letter to a favorite teacher, visiting your old school grounds, calling an old school mate to chat, or simply reading a classic you once read years ago, like Moby Dick or The Great Gatsby.

____ Have grade school and high school kids returning to school this season? Get a portable file holder and fill it with 5-7 file folders per child. Label each child's file folders with their names and common paper categories, such as report cards, graded tests, permission slips to be signed, graded book reports, school events, mementos and other such categories. As your kids bring home papers from school, you'll have a place to store them. Plus, you'll be able to find them in a pinch when needed.

____ Honor Johnny Appleseed's birthday on September 26th and the start of apple season, by paying a visit to a local apple orchard. Enjoy the fall weather while you pick apples with your family members or friends.

How to Quickly Build a Mailing List
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Publishing an E-zine is a lot of work and time consuming.
This is how you can build a valuable list, without having
to publish an E-zine on a regular basis.

Pay close attention, this is working great for me.

The first thing you need to do is go to
http://www.informationbyemail.com and sign up for a free auto
responder account. It only takes a few minutes to get
signed up. All you have to do is pick an E-mail address for
your account. Something like
booklets@informationbyemail.com.

Then when somebody sends a blank E-mail to that address
they will automatically be put into your auto responder
series. The system will also automatically create the code
you need to put a sign up form on your web site if you'd
like that feature.

But it gets even easier than that.

At the end of this article I am introducing a brand new
list building tool that I helped a friend test during it's
start up phase, and I'll tell you what, I fell in love with
this thing! It is working great for me, as well as couple
of other people that I asked to try it.

This list building tool is FREE, so you're not risking
much. http://www.homemadebooklets.com/The-Secret.htm

All you have to do is spend about 2 minutes to sign up for
a FREE account and add a couple lines of code to your web
site.

Then the free offer that you are promoting will show up on
other peoples web sites all over the place. You select the
category that you want to be in, so this really is
targeted.

Let me ask you this?

How much would you have to pay, to promote your offer in a
pop up window on somebody else's home page?

Money can't even buy that kind of exposure!

Yet, you can get it free using this list building tool.

But the heavy hitters gladly put this pop up on their home
page because it makes them money by bringing in fresh new
subscribers on a steady basis.

Don't like pop up windows?

Don't make that judgment until you read my free report
"People Love Pop Up Windows!" It's available here:
http://www.homemadebooklets.com/The-Secret.htm

When people check the box to get your free report or
whatever you offer, they are automatically added to your
auto responder series. Then you have up to ten
opportunities to contact them with your messages, and it's
all done automatically. You don't lift a finger!

If you upgrade to a paid account you can mail to this list
any time you like, but you can really accomplish a lot with
a free account.

But if you do upgrade, you then get up to 52 messages that
go out automatically. Powerful, powerful technique.

This is how I am using this concept on my gardening site,
and it works incredibly well.

People see the pop up window on somebody else's web site,
decide that they want what I am offering, and type in their
name and E-mail address. Immediately, they are sent via
E-mail, the first message in my auto responder series.

I welcome them to my list, then I give them a link to a
page on web site where they get all the free information I
promised them, in detail, with photos and all.

Then over the next six months or so, the auto responder
automatically sends them articles that are of interest to
them, and casually invites them back to my web site, over
and over.

This alone is really powerful, but do you see the main
advantage of this list building tool?

I actually capture the person's E-mail address before they
even see my web site. They don't even know who I am, but
they hand over their E-mail address because they want the
free offer I make them.

The auto responder approach has been working fantastic for
me for well over a year. Then just a few days ago I agreed
to test this list building tool. It was created by a friend
of mine, and he asked if I would help him test it before he
rolled it out.

All I can say is Wow!

The combination of what has been working well for me, along
with this new tool, is going to jump my business to the
next level, or two. I know that already.

Take a look at the list building tool. It has some really
powerful features, that maximize the "multiplication
effect".

People who know me, know that I barely find time to get to
my favorite message boards, so for me to put this kind of
time into promoting a gadget like this, it must really
work.

This list building tool has brought me about 115
subscribers in less than a week, and I haven't even started
to promote it. One of those subscribers spent $127.00 on
his first visit to my site!

With this list building tool you earn credits, and for each
credit your ad appears one time for each credit. I just
checked my stats and in two days my credits jumped from
3,000 to over 12,000. Why?

You'll understand why after you visit this page on my
website and request the free report I'm offering.
http://www.homemadebooklets.com/The-Secret.htm

I will show you how to totally exploit a traffic building
tool like this. I don't mean that you have to do anything
unethical. I'm just going to show you how to really make
this thing crank up your subscribers. There's an approach
that most people are totally overlooking.

Trust me, this report will reveal a very powerful way to
really put this list building tool to work for you.

Good luck in all your ventures,

Cleaning a Water Garden and Preparing for Winter
Diane Relf, Extension Specialist, Environmental Horticulture

As with any outdoor water source, a water garden collects organic matter that needs to be cleaned out. The best time to do this is when the water temperature is cooler, such as in the fall. This helps minimize any stress to fish that may live in your water garden. A few basic steps to cleaning out your pond include:

Get a holding container for the plants or fish, being sure it is large enough to hold the amount of water needed to sustain the plants and fish for several hours while you are emptying and cleaning the water garden. It is best to keep the holding container in the shade during this time, also.

Fill the holding container with water from the water garden, then empty the remainder of the water out of the garden using a pump if necessary. Use this water to irrigate other garden plants since it is rich in nutrients from the organic matter.

As the water is being emptied out of the garden, use a stiff, nylon-bristled brush to scrub down the sides of the pond so any debris collects in the bottom of the pond.

Use the nylon brush and a dustpan to collect up the debris and any remaining water in the bottom of the pond, placing it in a large bucket to be hauled to other garden areas and used as a soil amendment. Do not be too thorough in cleaning out your water garden -- there are normal bacteria levels that need to be maintained in a water garden.

Refill the water garden with half of the water from the holding container, then fill it the rest of the way with tap water, putting in the appropriate amount of dechlorinator if you have fish. Next, fill the holding container with tap water also as this will help the fish become adjusted to the new water temperature.

After a half hour or so, replace the plants and fish into the clean water garden. Normally, you should need to clean out a water garden only once a year. Also, it should not be necessary to add fresh water unless you have a problem with your fish. Adding fresh water will not help control algae, and it may destroy the bacterial balance in your water garden.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

According to Keith at Springdale Water Gardens, when getting your water garden ready for winter, there are really only a few adjustments you need to make:

Be sure leaves are kept out as they fall to keep the debris from accumulating on the bottom of the pond.

Set shallow plants down deep, if at all possible. It is best to leave any water lilies at the bottom all the time.

When the weather becomes very cold, such as in late November, stop feeding the plants and fish and make no bacterial applications.

When the pond is frozen, keep all leaves and other debris off the surface.

You can leave your recycling pump running all winter to keep the water moving in the pond. Just be sure water does not splash out and freeze, causing more water to be diverted from flowing back into the pond. If you want to stop a waterfall type of display, disconnect the pipes and drain them, but let the pump tube bubble toward the top of the pond to keep water moving. This sometimes prevents the pond from freezing. If you decide to cut off the pump, drain it and take it inside for the winter.

Battle the Winter Blahs
Carren W. Joye
In the dead of winter, parents of young children need creative ideas to get through these short, cold and rainy or snowy days besides just looking forward to spring. You do not have to stay confined to your house every day, and even when the weather absolutely prevents you from stepping outdoors, you and your child can enjoy fun activities at home.

So turn off that television and battle those winter blahs with a few fun and creative ideas.

Enjoy Those Rainy Day Activities Get out those old magazines of children’s crafts that you have been saving, or get on the Internet and try out some of the ideas at FamilyFun.com, ParentSoup.com and TheIdeaBox.com. Most of the activities and crafts call for materials you will already have in your home, and the directions are simple to follow. These activities are not only fun, they are also a great way to teach your youngsters some of the skills they will need in school, such as following directions and using scissors.

Try baking occasionally. You do not have to have a daughter to enjoy baking with your child. Both girls and boys enjoy measuring, mixing ingredients, watching their creations rise in the oven, and then eating the results! You can follow an old family recipe to bake muffins or brownies from scratch, or just buy a mix from the grocery store. Children enjoy the process as much as they enjoy the product, and they do not care if it is from scratch or from a mix.

Read books and tell stories. Set aside a certain time every day to read stories to your children. Along with their favorites, include a few they have not heard in a while. For a fun change, get them to tell you the story from the pictures. In addition, tell them stories from your childhood or stories you remember from your parents and grandparents. You could even make up stories using your children as the heroes and heroines. Depending on your children’s ages, play a storytelling game where each person adds a new part to the story.

Play board games. Young children can learn and enjoy playing Hi-Ho Cherrio, Chutes and Ladders, Memory, Mouse Trap, Trouble, Old Maid, and Uno. Older children will enjoy Checkers, Life, Scrabble and Monopoly. Not only will you and your children have fun, but they will also learn important skills such as counting, taking turns, strategizing and displaying good sportsmanship.

Remember all those times you bought your child a gift, and she played with the box just as much as she played with the toy? Give your child a large box from a moving company or an empty box that used to hold a television or computer. Using crayons or markers, your child will decorate the box and use her imagination for hours!

Sometimes your child will be too stir crazy to do anything constructive. To get all that energy out safely, assemble an indoor obstacle course, where you and she will climb over sofas, squeeze through chairs, crawl under tables, and roll over pillows. This could be designed as a “Follow the Leader” game, as a race, or just for fun.

Go On Indoor Field Trips Field trip destinations are not limited to outdoor locations, and indoor field trips provide a great escape from the house. Most areas offer a variety of places to go besides the zoo. You can arrange tours of local businesses and area attractions that your children are interested in at any time with just a phone call or two. In addition to the fire station and police station, try a local bakery, bookstore, pet store, newspaper, florist, TV and radio stations, and community artists such as painters, photographers and potters.

Many local libraries and bookstores feature story times and crafts for children a few times a week. Planetariums, art and history museums are also fascinating to children. Many metropolitan areas boast children’s museums with fun, hands-on learning activities for children – and adults! – of all ages.

Check schedules for children’s movies at the area theatres. Before taking your child to a movie, however, find out from a friend who has seen it first whether it will be appropriate for your child’s age.

Although the weather may prevent you from going to the park, you and your child may enjoy walking around one of the malls. Babies enjoy “people-watching” as much as adults do. For your older children, try bowling or roller-skating.

Join or Start a Playgroup For free or low-cost entertainment on a regular basis, try a playgroup. All moms need a break now and then, but many do not have the extra money to spend on a Moms Day Out program or on going out. Playgroups offer an opportunity for at-home parents to get that weekly break from home, and yet spend time with their children at the same time.

Weekly playgroups provide an enjoyable diversion where the children play with friends while their parents talk or where all the members enjoy a structured parent-child activity. Besides, unlike a preschool or moms’ day out program, parents stay with their children at playgroup, alleviating the problem of separation anxiety.

Search for a playgroup in your area by contacting area churches, libraries, YMCAs, and community centers because that is where the majority of playgroups meet, if not in homes. Sometimes playgroups will advertise with area pediatricians and the community calendar of the local newspaper. Search the Internet as well. Web sites such as OnlinePlaygroup.com and ClubsForMoms.Homestead.com offer playgroup directories as well as information on starting a playgroup.

Now that you are armed for battle with a few ideas, turn off that television and make some plans to pass the time these next several weeks. Before you know it, spring will be here, and you and your child will be able to look back at a fun-filled winter.

Ya gotta season cast iron

By Cajun Clark

Cast iron can be a heavy trip, but you don't need to get excited about the size of some of these fine pieces of cookware; in all likelihood they're not what you actually need for your own personal in-kitchen use. In most instances, you'll probably want a 10-inch and 12-inch skillet, a 14-inch reversible griddle, and a five-quart Dutch oven. These, for the most part, are doable. However, if this is your first encounter with cast iron, start small. Buy a 10-inch or 12-inch skillet, take it home, season it (you can even buy seasoned cookware now if that turns ya on), use it, get used to it. Then, when you find out how much you like cooking with cast iron, make your move; strap on your weight-lifter belt and go acquire your next piece or pieces.

As you know, everyone has different needs because everyone cooks just a little bit differently, so what works for one doesn't work for another. And if you've never looked, seriously looked at cast iron cookware, you won't believe the choices available to you. Some of the pieces you'll recognize, other pieces only folks who work in the foundry can name. Here' a good one to mull over: Can they use what they can name? Maybe yes, maybe no; but granny can. Now, what's the first thing you need to do?

Season it, as us old-timer's know. Now if you read the directions, you're usually instructed to coat your new acquisition with oil, lard, that sort of stuff, put it in an oven at a recommended temperature for a certain period of time. That's okay as far as it goes, but here's your...

First Tip: Get out the olive oil. That's right the so-called high priced stuff. You'll be glad you did, honest. Pour some of this miracle nectar into the pot, pan, whatever you bought; then take a paper towel and coat the outside and inside surfaces.

After you've accomplished this simple task, turn your oven on to 325°F, place your treasure on the middle shelf and leave it there for at least an hour; preferably 1-1/2 hours. Turn off your oven, let everything cool down, and when you come back, take another paper towel and wipe your piece of cookware down. Now put it to use. However, if you want to exert a little more effort, it won't hurt you or the cookware to take this step one more time.

Second Tip: After using your cast iron cookware, let it cool down. Then wash it with warm soapy water, using a scrunge type sponge. Do Not use steel wool or any other rough abrasive. After you've washed it, rinse it off, and here's the key step to take: put it on the burner, turn it on, let the water evaporate, then pour in a little olive oil, use a paper towel to coat the insides, then turn off the burner. Let it cool, wipe out the excess, then place a paper towel in the cookware, and store. When you want to use your cast iron beauty again, wipe it out with a paper towel, and go for it. However, if it's been a long time you might want to turn the burner on before you wipe it out; but that's a personal decision.

Third Tip: If you want to build up your seasoning faster, until it has that shiny dark, dark color cherished by all cast iron cookware aficionados, put it in your oven. Then, whenever you turn your oven on, apply a light coating of olive oil and place it on an empty shelf. Do this a few times, and you'll smile every time you pick it up to use it. Guaranteed.

Finally, let da ol' mon Caj share a little known, well kept secret: If my old buddy Icee Hubb had not come along with his three tips when he did, the cast iron around here would have been used for a door stop, boat anchor, nut-cracker, or all three!

Aren’t Your Going To Thank Me For Making You A Sandwich?

By Robyn M. Harpe

Be joyful always; pray continually; give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus. 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 (NIV)

As parents we are always looking for those teachable moments; times when the opportunity to teach our children one of life's many lessons seems to fall in our laps. One such moment came for us as the family sat down one day at mealtime.

Most of the time our youngest will say the mealtime blessing but occasionally will ask that we all take a turn. So we go around the table, each of us expressing our thanks to the Lord for providing us with our food until it's time for our oldest son (an adolescent) to speak. After hearing the usual complaints, some half-hearted mumble comes out of his mouth.

Shortly after we begin eating, the oldest decides to make a sandwich for the youngest. After handing over the sandwich he barks, “Aren’t you going to thank me for making you a sandwich?”

My eyes opened wide. Looking directly at him I calmly said, “You’re demanding a ‘thank you’ for making someone else a sandwich but you refused to give thanks to God for providing you with your meal?”

Giving thanks to God is something we should do everyday without reservation. He deserves our praise first and foremost. He is our Creator, He loves us more than we could ever imagine, and He provides everything we need!

Speak to one another with psalms, hymns and spiritual songs. Sing and make music in your heart to the Lord, always giving thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. Ephesians 5:19-20 (NIV).

Top 10 Pet Health Tips

Courtesy of HEARTGARD®

The best Rx. Just like children, dogs and cats need to visit a medical professional once a year, and not just for their shots. While vaccination is an important part of routine care, regular visits to the veterinarian allow them to be screened for a variety of diseases, and provide owners with the best possible information about caring for their dog or cat.

The latest buzz. Heartworm disease is a potentially fatal condition, spread by mosquitoes. While heartworm disease is easy to prevent by using a monthly preventative, like HEARTGARD® Plus (ivermectin/pyrantel), it is difficult to treat. Symptoms of heartworm disease in dogs vary from nothing to a cough and exercise intolerance, and a dog may carry anywhere from one to 250 worms. Cats, however, usually have only one to three worms, and symptoms may vary from nothing, to a cough and respiratory distress, or even death.

Keep cool. Heat stroke is a dangerous condition where normal body temperature of 101.5 degrees Fahrenheit in cats and 102.0 degrees Fahrenheit in dogs is extremely elevated, sometimes as high as 109.5 degrees Fahrenheit. Symptoms include vomiting, increased breathing, unresponsiveness and collapse. Heat stroke can be avoided by providing pets with shade and fresh water. If you suspect a pet is suffering from heat stroke, immerse or spray him with cool water and see a veterinarian immediately. Do NOT use cold or ice water.

Pesky Pests. Fleas and ticks are more then a nuisance; they can cause serious problems, ranging from mild skin irritations to life threatening diseases. Flea allergy dermatitis, the most common cause of itching and scratching in dogs and cats, can be caused by fleas. Ticks may transmit numerous diseases, including Lyme disease and Rocky Mountain spotted fever. Using a flea and tick control product, such as FRONTLINE® brand products, can help keep these pests at bay.

Show those pearly whites. Dogs and cats can suffer from the same dental problems as people, including pain, infection and tooth loss. If left untreated, poor dental hygiene can lead to disease in the heart, lungs, kidneys and liver. While bones and toys help reduce plaque accumulation, you may need to brush their teeth daily to prevent dental problems. Use a soft toothbrush and toothpaste specially formulated for animals.

Sit, stay, heel, roll over. Though you may think of Fido as one of the kids, training is a necessary part of puppy care. A well-trained dog is often more welcome then an unruly one, and subsequently can spend more time with its owners without getting into trouble.

You are what you eat. A balanced diet is important to help maintain your dog's or cat's health. What is healthy for humans isn't necessarily healthy for pets - table scraps can't fulfill their dietary needs. Foods specifically designed for cats and dogs and approved by the Association of American Feed Control Officials will help provide your dog or cat with a balanced diet.

Beggin' for a workout. Exercise is as important for pets as it is for people. Not only does it help prevent obesity and other health problems, but it also builds the human-animal relationship.

Safeguard the home. Safeguarding the home and yard can help prevent serious accidents. Watch out for poisonous plants (dumb cane, philodendron, hyacinth and mistletoe), pesticides, medications, antifreeze, low electrical cords and small objects animals could choke on.

Have a heart to heart. The most important way to keep dogs and cats healthy is to give them lots of love. Spending time with them and including them in activities strengthens the bond you share. Remember, in order to be truly healthy, your dog or cat needs to be happy.

HERB TIPS

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Vegetarian Times
March, 1996
Boost your brain power: herbs to improve your memory and mental acuity.(The Herbalist)
Author/s: Kathi Keville
Part 2 of 5
We'll get to specific herbs in a moment, but first some general guidelines for using them are in order. The four Gs are all non-toxic, and are most effective if taken on a relatively long-term basis. Most people use them for several weeks, but you can safely take them for several months. (You could take these herbs for years without side effects, but I don't recommend it. If your need for these herbs is that great, you may need to investigate whether you have other health problems.) You can use any of the herbs individually, but I and most other herbalists have found they are most potent if taken in combination.
The following dosages apply to both single herbs and two or more of the herbs combined in equal parts; these amounts should be enough to produce the effects described later in various studies. For tinctures, take 30 drops (about half a dropperful) two to four times daily. The amount of herb in a capsule or tablet varies from brand to brand, so follow the directions on the label. For a tea, you can purchase the herbs either already packaged in tea bags or loose in whatever amount you choose. For loose herbs, place herb in a cup or glass jar; pour in a cup of boiling water per teaspoon of herb and cover. Let it steep for 15 minutes or so, then strain and enjoy. If you're facing an especially grueling situation--such as an exam or a job interview--you can safely double the dose that day; be sure to take one of those double doses about an hour beforehand.
Ginkgo (Ginkgo biloba) has won widespread recognition as a brain tonic that seems to be particularly useful for decreased mental capacity due to a physical disability or advancing years. The brain requires one-fifth of the total oxygen carried in the blood to function optimally, and if it doesn't get this amount, cognitive abilities decline. The primary reason mental processes decrease as people age is atherosclerosis, or hardening of the arteries, which slows the flow of blood, and thus oxygen, to the brain. Research has found that gingko increases the ability of the brain to use available oxygen, and it also directly stimulates the area of the brain responsible for memory (Pharmakotherapie, 1978, 1:137-144). Evidently, many people appreciate these effects of ginkgo, because according to the Herb Research Foundation in Boulder, Colo., it's one of top-selling herbs in the United States.
Research currently is underway to see if ginkgo can delay mental deterioration in the early stages of Alzheimer's disease, and dozens of studies done in Germany and France during the last decade have found that ginkgo helped people 60 and older feel more alert, attentive, sociable and less moody after just one to two months. In fact, studies have found that ginkgo improved mental and behavioral performance in the elderly as well as such drugs as Hydergine, a prescription medication for treating senility that is the world's fifth most widely prescribed drug. (Fortschritte der Medizin 1990, vol. 108).
Fitness Tips For Work-At-Home Moms
Written by: Lynn Bode
Despite what many may think, being a work-from-home mom takes a lot of time and a lot of work. I'm sure you've heard someone say, "She doesn't really have a job, she just works from home." That statement couldn't be farther from the truth! Running a home business takes almost all of your time. Therefore, many other things drop down on your priority list. Probably one of the first ones to drop is fitness.
When you have a never-ending to-do list, a house that never seems to get clean and children who constantly need something, it's understandable that exercise can take a back seat. But, it shouldn't.
Exercise offers so many important benefits that it should always be part of your weekly routine. Of course, we all know that exercise can help you stay slim and fit. But, do you also know about all the other great results of exercising? Daily physical activity reduces stress and can help you sleep better - two things that are especially beneficial to home business owners. Fitness helps keep you healthy and has been linked to reducing the risk of some diseases and to warding off depression. Researchers also believe that strength training can help prevent osteoporosis. If that still doesn't convince you to get moving, then keep in mind that exercise also improves self-esteem, increases stamina and ultimately helps you be able to do continuous work for longer. What more could a home business owner ask for?
It all sounds great, right? But you still don't think that you can find any time in your hectic schedule for staying in shape. Don't worry. There are a lot of creative ways to fit it in. Below are some tips to help you get started.
  1. Schedule time for working out. When you work at home it's so easy to work around the clock. To help avoid this think of yourself as having a traditional "office job". In most "office jobs" when you go home for the night you leave work behind and concentrate on personal things. Even though going home for you may simply be walking down the hall, you need to set boundaries in order to find time for you.
  2. During working hours, take several 5-10 minute breaks and run up and down the stairs (or even just walk). This will also help rejuvenate your mind.
  3. Sitting in front of a computer can be hard on your body, especially your posture. So, find a comfortable place where you can occasionally stand to do your computer work.
  4. It's not necessary for you to find 30 continuous minutes for working out. You'll get just as much benefit if you break your exercise into small chunks. Try 10 minutes before you start work, 10 minutes at lunch and 10 minutes after work (re-read # 1 above if you just said you have no "after work" time).
  5. If you don't wan't to spend a lot of time in the kitchen but still want to eat healthy, cook large portion meals on the weekend that you can freeze. Then simply defrost and warm for dinners during the week. This saves you the time of having to make dinner and you don't have to compromise calories as you would if you instead opted for take-out.
  6. One great advantage of working at home is that you can workout over your lunch hour while never leaving your office plus you don't have to pack your workout clothes and toiletries to take with you to work. This saves you travel time, which you can instead spend on grabbing a healthy bite to eat. And, if you don't have any face-to-face meetings scheduled, then you don't have to worry about looking perfect after your workout.
  7. If you haven't already done so, invest in a good hands-free headset for your phone. This is a great way to multi-task because your hands are free to do other things while you concentrate on your conference call. You can even do some simple (but worthwhile) exercise moves. Some good choices are squats, tricep dips, lunges, wall push-ups, etc.
  8. Keep healthy snacks available for when you need an energy boost or simply just need something to chew on to help you get through some tough work. Don' forget to keep water on hand and sip some all throughout your day.
  9. Purchase an exercise stability ball. While there are dozens of great toning exercises you can do with the ball, it's also beneficial to simply sit on it. Try sitting on it instead of a chair for even short periods throughout your day. This will help build your core strength (your trunk area).
  10. Don't forget the importance of stretching. Take a couple of minutes every hour to stand up and stretch your entire body.
As you can see, exercise offers huge benefits even with just a small amount of effort. And when you exercise, you also set a great example for your kids. So, to help you, your business, and your family it's time to stop making excuses and just start moving!
