I would like to thank all those who sent me a notice to let me know my link was not working. It was my fault, I got in a hurry and did not check it. Totally, my blunder. My new main page is going to go live on October 10th. I will be adding to it as I go along, but all the links will be live. OK, on the the meat of this issue! Are You A Pattern? Or a Creator? by Ken Darby "Doctor, I'd like you to evaluate my 13 year-old son." "OK: He's suffering from a transient psychosis with an intermittent rage disorder, punctuated by episodic radical mood swings, but his prognosis is good for full recovery." "How can you say all that without even meeting him?" "I thought you said he's 13?" Well! The doctor didn't even need to see the boy. He just called out the universal description. It fit. Of course it fit. There are similar descriptions for every age, yours too. How do you like that? How do you like knowing you are predictable, your every step can be measured and even predicted in advance? That is pretty much what happens when you stay in a rut. Once you get "comfortable" you also become " predictable". Generally, when you become "comfortable" you also become less "profitable". It's time to think. Where are you? Are you still pursuing dreams, like you did in your youth? Are you still active trying to find answers to new things? Do you continue to chase the rainbow? If not then time and circumstance may have worked their wonders on you. You may have succumbed to a notion in your own mind, that you are not going to make it the way you thought. And, so, you stop your effort. A little switch goes off in your head that says "I'm tired of being out front. I'm tired of always looking. I'm tired of not having all the money I want. I might be better off 'settling' down." That little thought is the killer of all future advancement. That is the little gremlin inside you that tries to keep you from succeeding. If you listen to it - - - you fail. The gremlin is sinister in it's approach. It sneaks up on you when you are too tired to defend yourself against it. It plants these kind of thoughts when you aren't looking. It is time for you to have a look at how many of these kinds of thoughts have come into your mind in the last year. How have you reacted to them? Have you taken control or have you turned control over to it? Each person may choose to win or choose to lose. Their life will reflect what they chose. The absence of a choice to win is usually a choice for failure. Failure can come automatic. Success takes planning and work. What are you going to choose, this day? Will you take the course of least resistance? Or will you put on your "tough" hat and take charge of your life and direct it the way you want? Are You A Pattern? Or a Creator? ---------- Ken Darby writes articles, books and other material helping people achieve their goals. An internet business may not be for you, but then it might be! Go have a look. I have laid out the steps and methods in a clear and to the point series of short letters. Send a blank email to: mailto:professional@rr-email a>com |

CGI and Forms for your website by Stuart Reid Are you making the most of interactive features for your web site? Almost all browsers now support various scripts and data entry methods. They are not hard to use, and can spur a browser to do *something*. JavaScript and Java plugins can work in any web page. CGI tools will usually require access to your `cgi-bin` and an ability to set permissions, unless the tool is remotely hosted. Note: If you are reading this online and the "pre" tags show up ignore them. They are to stop the examples executing. Forms If you include a form on your website you can use e-mail from the server to do lots of useful things. You can include a feedback form, which will send you a note to your personal e-mail address. You can use a sign-up form that does the same thing but sends the details to your autoresponder or newsletter tool. You can even use a refer-a-friend script that will send your link to inputted e-mail addresses. All these help to promote your site and give something back to the user. An empty input box or a flashing cursor is screaming to be used! It is much more efficient than a `mailto:` link. Forms are simple to implement. You need to place some HTML in your page and you need to use a script on your site. Most hosting packages come with an e-mail form script, if not use one the links at the end of this article. As you can see from the example below, which goes in the body of your page somewhere, it's just a list of inputs for name and e-mail, plus a submit and a clear button. The rest is just standard HTML codes. <FORM ACTION="scriptname.cgi" METHOD="post"> <INPUT TYPE="hidden" NAME="recipient" VALUE="your.email@whatever.com"> Name: <INPUT TYPE="text" NAME="name" SIZE=10 MAXLENGTH=20> <br> E-Mail: <INPUT TYPE="text" NAME="email" SIZE=10 MAXLENGTH=30> <br> <INPUT TYPE="submit" VALUE="Send!"> <br> <INPUT TYPE="reset" VALUE="Clear"> </FORM> Obviously change scriptname.cgi to your script, and recipipent to your e-mail address. Script names are usually something like /cgi-bin/fmail.cgi or /cgi-bin/formmail.cgi Pop-Ups Pop-Ups are a simple line of JavaScript that will open another browser window. They can be misused, so keep it to one per site. Pop-Unders are similar but they are loaded behind the main window and are not seen until that main window is closed. Exit Pop-Ups will only appear when the main window is closed. They are all great advertising tools. Use them along with the next suggestion! This next part is placed in the <HEAD> section of your HTML page. Where it says htmlfile insert the name of the page you want popped-up. Where it says myWin that's the window title. Hopefully the rest is self explanatory. <script language="JavaScript"> <!--hide function OpenPopup() { window.open("htmlfile", "myWin", "status=no,scrollbars=yes, width= 400,height=300"); window.event.cancelBubble = true; window.event.returnValue = false; } //stop hiding--> </script> Then change your <BODY> tag <BODY onLoad="OpenPopup()"> Page Rotators These are used a lot for those running start-page exchanges, to maximise hits from various programs. You can also use them (and more effectively) with a Pop-Up to show different ads for each window that appears. They are also useful as a home page to show random ads, banners, etc on the site. Here is a good page-rotator script. It's too long to put here. Find it at http://hop.clickbank.net/?webhosts/ hithog Forums There a few good forum systems available for free. These are a well developed messageboard for your website and can help to create a community. In practice it can take a while to set up but if you are reasonably competent on your PC it shouldn't be no problem. You can get forums remotely hosted so you only need to provide a link from your site, but this is probably a last resort as reliability can't be assured and the external site will take people away from your own pages. A good forum system is from Discus. Get it at http://www.discusware.com/ FFAs, Classifieds, etc Worth hosting on your site, but probably not worth using yourself. All they are good for is harvesting e-mails and these are usually fake, junk, or autoresponders anyway. If you moderate your links page well and only allow posting from the page itself it can be useful to your visitors. FFA from http://www.submitad.com/ Classifieds from http://www.becanada.com/ Ad Trackers Not really part of your site but useful for your own ads. A lot of things you *pay* for can be had for free with a little know-how or perseverance. Why use ROIBot or similar if you can have it tracked from your own URL? eg: "http://mysite.com/track. cgi?link1" Look for all kinds of scripts from: http://www.bignosebird.com/ http://www.scriptarchive.com/ http://www.free-scripts.net/ http://javascript.internet.com/ http://freecode.com/ There are scripts for everything out there. If you have the ability to use them then do! You can even get complete referral scripts, affiliate program scripts, shopping basket applications, remote-management scripts and more. Not all are free, but compared to the cost of a subscription service well worth considering. -------------------- Stuart Reid is the publisher of Netpreneur News and webmaster of Netpreneur Now! Basic Guidelines To Keeping Your Work-At-Home Business
Legal by Montegaza Cristian http ://www.work-at-home-business-dot.com A work at home business or home business can be an exciting, challenging, and lucrative adventure. It is, however, relatively the same as any other business, and is subject to the same laws and regulations that govern any business, no matter what the size. Simply because home businesses are sometimes "one person" endeavors (especially in the beginning) does not free them from adherence to the same laws and regulations that apply to all businesses. In order to avoid problems both in the beginning, and in the
future of any home business, it is important to do some research, spend some money, and otherwise make sure that all laws and regulations at the state, local, and national levels are followed "to the letter". Herewith follows some basic guidelines to keeping your work
at home business legal, and avoiding possible aggravation and heartache in the future: 1. Call your Department of State, or other local government
agency, before starting your business. All information from local government agencies is always usually free, and any required licenses such as DBA (Doing Business As, or Fictitious Name Licensing), will be fully explained, as well as Articles of Incorporation and other smaller license requirements. Usually the fees and how to obtain all necessary licensing will be explained as well in a phone call such as this. 2. Call your regional or local government office for any
advice on zoning permits that may be required or space and inventory requirements, depending on the type of business. 3. Call an accountant or accounting firm. These firms are generally hugely knowledgeable about how to start and maintain a legal work at home business and will freely share this advice with others. They will in addition have a good knowledge of local requirements and tax issues. DIV> 4. Find out before starting, what tax requirements are
necessary and the forms you must have on hand before beginning. These forms and requirements will depend on the type of business, number of employees (if any), etc., and are a necessary part of setting up any home-based business. 5. Call a local business chamber of commerce if possible.
Other business owners can effectively impart information on other legalities, and usually do so very willingly. All of the above require some fees, but are usually very
economical means of preventing larger fines and sometimes legal action if regulations and licensing requirements are not met. Remember, "An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure", and this statement is no truer than when applied to a work at home business. -----------------------------------------------------------

Five Must-Have Ingredients for the Organic Gardener's Toolkit Arzeena Hamir For any gardener who still hasn't been convinced about the need to garden organically, here are some statistics that may help change your mind. In March of 2001, the American Cancer Society published a report linking the use of the herbicide glyphosate (commonly sold as Round-up) with a 27% increased likelihood of contracting Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma. John Hopkins University also revealed that home gardeners use almost 10 times more pesticide per acre than the average farmer and that diseases caused by environmental illness, exposure to chemicals etc., is now the number one cause of death in the U.S. With the EPA's recent phasing out of common pesticides such as Dursban and Diazinon, we are now realizing that many of the chemicals that we thought were "safe" were never actually tested to see what their affect on children, women, and the elderly could be. The time has come to reassess our dependence on pesticides. For anyone contemplating the switch to organic gardening, here are a few ingredients that should be in every gardener's toolkit:

Q&A About Diary of a Mother: Parenting Stories and Other Stuff by Christine Louise Hohlbaum Why did you decide to write Diary of a Mother?
Ever since I was eleven years old, I have wanted to write a book.
What is it about?
It is about a career woman turned housewife and her journey through parenthood. She goes from being an Ivy league educated go-getter to a children dedicated homemaker. It is a broad step to take, and many women feel lost at first. I wrote this book for them.
What made you write about your experiences with your children?
I had a very funny experience at the doctor’s office one day right after my second child was born. I felt so compelled to share my story that I sent an e-mail to all my family members and friends. They laughed so hard that they wanted to read more. That’s how it got started.
How did you, a stay-at-home mom, find time to write it?
My then two-year-old daughter attended preschool three mornings a week. When I dropped her off, my son would fall asleep in the car. Many of my stories were written in the Dunkin’ Donuts parking lot. P>
Do you consider yourself a role model for other mothers?
No, but I think that my readers can really relate to the things that I have experienced. I want people to know that they are not alone!
How can you order the book?
It is most easily available on-line at sites such as amazon and affiliates, barnesandnoble.com, booksamillion.com, and at the publisher's site itself, iUniverse.com.
Why did you choose iUniverse as your publisher?
There are many benefits to using iUniverse, a print-on-demand publishing house. While you have to pay a little bit upfront, they are extremely fast, responsive, reliable, and offer you additional services in the event that your book shows marketability. When I started this project, my goal was to sell ten copies. I think I might have achieved that goal already!
What other type of writing do you do?
My background is in political science, German and English/American Literature. I was strongly influenced by Toni Morrison, Zora Neale Hurston, Ralph Ellison and the Naturalist movement in American Literature (Jack London, Stephen Crane). I love to write short stories that take a snapshot from everyday life and apply it to bigger themes. I also write e-zine articles that have appeared in places such as http://www.iparentingstories.com http://www.betweenmoms.info , http://www.momstreet.com/http://www.momtomomchat.com, http://www.rhzine.com, etc.
What’s next for you?
I am currently working on a novel about a French-Canadian family in Northern Maine. It’s just an idea I had.
Thank you for this conversation.
Thank you! Christine Louise Hohlbaum, author of Diary of a Mother: Parenting Stories and Other Stuff, is an American living near Munich, Germany with her husband and two children. The Animal Rescue Site is having
trouble getting enough people to click on their link daily
to meet their quota to getting free food donated every day to abused
and neglected animals. It takes less than a minute to go to their
site and click on "feed an animal in need" for free. This doesn't
cost you a thing. Their corporate sponsors/advertisers use the number
of daily visits to donate food to abandoned/neglected animals in
exchange for advertising.
Here's the web site! Pass it along to people you know.

The Tragedy of Animal Collectors Cruelty can hit far too close to home. A couple of weeks ago, neighbors of an elderly lady, concerned for her health, called authorities to check in on her. They discovered her in ailing health - along with approximately 50 diseased cats. The home was covered in feces, urine, and garbage, and the authorities stated that the stench was overwhelming. The local SPCA humanely put down all but two of the cats, to prevent them from spreading disease to the other animals at the shelter. The two remaining cats were put into isolation where they were being evaluated. Unfortunately, this type of neglect and cruelty is not that uncommon. Within the last year or so: Two elderly sisters were found with nearly 200 dead and diseased cats and one dead dog. Another lady willing surrendered several cats, acknowledging that she simply did not have the resources to properly care for them. She took the initiative to try to "do the right thing". This type of voluntary surrender is rare. An elderly lady was found with over 20 Pomeranians in her "care". They were all ill, and were taken to the local humane society. Some were too sick and died, even with vet care; others were eventually adopted into new homes. The cases mentioned above are just a small fraction of what happens far too often. The "keeper" of the animals, called "animal collectors", are often portrayed by the media as being loving "pet parents" who think of their pets as a part of their families. Concerned citizens become outraged at the perceived heavy-handedness of the authorities; after all, how can they heartlessly separate the pet parent from their beloved family? Now, I'm no psychologist and certainly no expert on the human mind. But I have to say that I just cannot fathom how someone who is supposed to love animals can cause them such suffering. You see, I volunteer at the humane society that took in those Pomeranians. I saw the dogs with my very own eyes. I saw their fear. I saw their illness. I heard their cries. And it made me sick. What's even worse is that it probably wasn't even as bad as what shelter staff have been exposed to in the past (or will be exposed to in the future). What amazed me was how many people rallied around the lady who owned the dogs. They converged upon her home, cleaned it up, provided her with new furniture ... all in an effort to show the authorities that her place was now "fit for living". What was the point? They felt that she deserved better: they felt that she should have some of the dogs, her "family", returned to her! I'm not saying that we shouldn't try to help her or others like her. If it can be done, it should be done. But we shouldn't aggravate the situation by allowing a known animal collector to have pets again. These pets, no matter how much the collector claims to love them, are in very real danger. Animal collectors are known to have high relapse rates: that means that even if they've had their pets taken away once, they may go ahead and start collecting large numbers of animals again - animals that they are not equipped to care for. I don't know what the answer is. But until someone finds a way to prevent animal collection, all we can do is try to help in whatever small way we can. It CAN happen in your neighborhood; it happened in mine. If you have reason to believe that you know of an animal collector, I encourage you to discuss the situation with your local humane society. Some indicators may include: A strong urine or feces smell, detectable from outside the home; An unusually large number of animals are always around, skulking around the house or scurrying about within the home; New animals seem to be appearing around the home regularly, or too often. Large piles of garbage, newspapers, or other material - animal collectors sometimes collect things other than just animals. By placing that one phone call, you may be saving the lives of the animals contained within the home and preventing them from needless suffering. Every pet deserves a happy home; let's all do our parts. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ©Copyright 2000, PawsperousPets.com. Author/s: Kathi Keville Part 4 of 5 The same effects were found when the subjects took Siberian ginseng (Eleutherococcus sentiocosus), which is from the same family of plants as Panax ginseng and shares many of the same attributes. In other studies on Siberian ginseng, Russian researchers gave the herb to people who were senile or had mental disorders from atherosclerosis. After a period of time ranging from one to three months, most of the subjects' memories had improved; most also felt stronger and more self-confident about functioning in day-to-day life. When I first started using medicinal herbs in 1970, I wondered why gotu kola (Centella asiatica) was one of the few Oriental herbs widely available in the United States. (Gotu kola is not to be confused with the cola nut [Cola acuminata], which is found in some brain-herb preparations but unfortunately contains caffeine.) I traced its introduction to the Western world back to 1933, when a story in India's Ceylon Daily News was picked up by The New York Times. The attention-grabbing article called gotu kola "the Secret of Perpetual Youth" and said that the herb energized and preserved the brain cells of anyone who took it. I and many other herbalists have found gotu kola to be extremely effective, despite the fact that relatively few scientific studies have been conducted to confirm its benefits. One clinical study did find that the scores on standardized intelligence tests and even the behavioral patterns of mentally challenged children improved (Medicinal Plants of India, vol. 1: 217-219). One of the best things about gotu kola is that although it is known as a brain stimulant, pharmacological research shows that it contains at least two sedative compounds; in fact, east Indians use it to quiet the mind for yoga and meditation. Thus, gotu kola gives you the best of both worlds: You feel calm and relaxed, yet mentally alert. SNIFF YOUR WAY TO BRAIN POWER MODERN JAPANESE RESEARCH shows that a number of aromas are indeed brain stimulants, and as a result, several large corporations in Tokyo now employ aromatherapy, or the therapeutic use of scent from essential plant oils. Throughout the day, various fragrances are released by a computer-controlled air system. A typical scent for the morning is lemon, to wake up workers. After lunch, the invigorating scent of cypress is used to promote constructive work. Peppermint improves work efficiency and dispels drowsiness in offices and conference rooms; it's often accompanied by lavender, which helps create a positive mood. Workers can also visit Tokyo's Health Club Harry's for a 30-minute stress-releasing morning workout in a room scented with rosemary and lemon to improve their concentration for the rest of the day. Research in this country has found similar effects. For example, research done at the University of Cincinnati by psychology professor William N. Dember, Ph.D., found that workers in rooms scented with peppermint had more correct answers when identifying complicated patterns on a computer, and their performance didn't decline as rapidly as workers in unscented rooms (Journal of Cosmetic Chemistry, 1991, vol. 42: 199-210). In a similar study, researchers found that the fragrances of lemon, pepper and cinnamon all cut computer errors by more than half. |

Ulcers Are No Laughing Matter Written by Brigitte Synesael Your Life-Your Choice http://www.Life-Choices.com Literally speaking, an ulcer is an open sore, often infected. Frequently this sore is in the stomach or the duodenum, the part of the intestines which connects with the stomach. These are referred to as Peptic Ulcers, and there is nothing pleasant about this experience. The most common symptom of ulcers is an intense burning sensation below the breastbone, which is typically felt between 1-3 hours after meals. The pain can be intense enough to cause its' victim to awaken during the night with an excruciating internal burning sensation. It could cause headaches, nausea and/or vomiting. Often severe heartburn in evident. It's possible that a Peptic Ulcer could develop symptoms such as dark tar-like stools or spitting up blood. These advanced symptoms may be indicative of gastro-intestinal bleeding and should be immediately addressed by your doctor. Bleeding ulcers are potentially life-threatening and are to be considered a medical emergency. Although it has been determined that there could be several contributing factors resulting in Peptic or Stomach Ulcers, emotional stress and anxiety are generally considered the primary causes. Among other contributors are prolonged use of anti- inflammatory drugs, steroids (in particular those taken for arthritis), excessive smoking, food allergies and poor nutrition. Recent evidence has also identified a type of bacteria almost always found in persons who have Stomach Ulcers. This bacteria, Helicobacter pylori, is rarely found in those who have been spared from the experience. It is thought that H. pyloric may be a risk factor for stomach cancer. A blood test or a biopsy of the stomach lining can determine the presence of this bacteria. Even though this can be a serious condition, it is one that is easily taken care of. From a nutritional perspective, avoiding dairy products is recommended as they can aggravate the situation. Also avoid caffeine, alcohol, fatty foods, and soda pop. Recommended foods are high fiber foods (if you're dealing with a bleeding ulcer, consume nonirritating fiber like guar gum and/or psyllium seed), low fat yogurt, avocados, bananas, squash, yams, steamed broccoli, carrots and carrot juice. Blue grapes, almonds and almond milk, potatoes, and cabbage juice can be beneficial in the healing process. Okra, papaya, persimmons, sprouts and sweet potatoes are also among the foods that are helpful. There are also many vitamins that can be beneficial when dealing with this condition. Vitamin E helps to relieve pain and reduces stomach acid. Vitamin A helps to heal ulcerated tissue and protects the stomach lining from irritation. Vitamin C with bioflavonoids can help to heal ulcers. Vitamin K prevents bleeding. Vitamin B complex, Zinc, Calcium/magnesium, and Potassium are all helpful in the healing process. There are a great many herbs and herbal combinations that can be of substantial benefit in healing Peptic Ulcers. This is not intended to be a complete list, but rather some suggestions of easily accessible herbs that could be helpful when dealing with this condition. · Aloe Vera Juice after meals encourages the healing of damaged tissue. · Alfalfa is an excellent source of vitamin K and will help to control bleeding. · DGL form of Licorice (deglycyrrhizinated licorice) is a natural anti-inflammatory that produces a mucus, which protects the stomach wall. Use 750-1,500 milligrams 2-3 times daily between meals for 8-16 weeks. NOTE: DO NOT SUBSTITUTE ordinary Licorice Root. It can elevate blood pressure if used daily for more than 7 days and should be avoided completely by those with high blood pressure. · Slippery Elm soothes irritated mucous membranes. · Golden Seal is a natural antibiotic that fights infection and promotes healing for the digestive system. DO NOT take for more than 1 week or during pregnancy. It could disturb normal intestinal flora. · Pau d'arco is a powerful antibiotic which can fight the presence of bacterial infection in ulcers. · A chelate form of Calcium/Magnesium helps to soothe the nerves and to relieve stress. Again this is just a sampling of herbs that can benefit a Peptic Ulcer condition. Although helpful, I recommend you use caution with herbs such as Chamomile and Golden Seal, and do not suggest they be used on a continuous basis. One more point to consider is that while both prescription and over-the- counter drugs may well relieve the symptoms of ulcers, they do not repair the damaged tissue, which is the real problem. These are short term quick-fixes that may actually do more harm than good as they create an illusion that the ulcer is cured or under control. Many experts believe that food allergies are also a major cause of ulcers. If you have a tendency to be prone to Stomach Ulcers, you may want to consider allergies as a possible source. |
