Hey There, Glad you stopped by today. Welcome new and regular subscribers! Thank you for taking a moment out of your day to visit with me. I have tried to fill this issue with some more quality "stuff" for you to browse through. Have a wonderful and safe weekend. As promised, I have included a contest in this issue. However, I have decided not to activate the new site. In all good consciousness, I cannot send you to a site that still has none active links. My progress is slow in getting all the pages uploaded and ready, but school is in session and my time is now split between the two. OK, on the the meat of this issue! 3 "Stupid Proof" Ways To Make Money From Home. Written By: Gary Baker Hello to all of you loyal, hardworking future home business successes. In this article you are going to discover 3 proven ways for you to make yourself a legitimate income from your home and do it part-time with no money. So lets get right into it shall we... Way #1- Create, write and sell specialized "how to" information products. This is one of the best ways to make yourself a quite fortune and it is being done by normal individuals like YOU everyday! In order to get into this home based money maker you will need to come up with a winning info product idea. You can do this by simply sitting down with paper and pen and begin listing everything you might know on any number of different topics. Most people don't understand they have a money making product inside of them because we are taught from a very young age to work for someone else, i.e. "get a day job". You might be good at budgeting your money, working on computers, cooking, building and rebuilding cars, or any number of things. Once you find a topic you want to write about, you can then simply put together a tiny booklet and sell it through newspapers, magazines, and the Internet. Way #2- Buying And Selling. This is a often overlooked quick money maker for many people. Do you have some things laying around your house that you just do not use anymore? These things might range from desks, video games, old cameras, couches, tables, etc... You could simply take what you have laying around, then place a classified ad in your local paper(by the way there are many local papers that offer "free ads" for such things as these)and sell it for a quick profit! Believe it or not there are many successful people who do this every day and are making thousands of dollars per month from their home and do this on a part-time basis. Way #3- Online Auctions. This is similar to Way #2 but you place your items for auctions on such sites as http://www.ebay.com Online auctions are becoming the "wave of the future" for making a full-time living from home. You probably have 2 or 3 things right now laying around that could possibly be bringing you in some very nice cash profits and you don't even need to spend a penny on any advertising. It is usually free to register with Ebay and then they take a small percentage of each sale for your listing. If you do this right, Online Auctions could make you a huge fortune. There are hundreds of ordinary individuals right now who are making strong 5 and 6 figure incomes from home using Online Auctions. If you are truly serious about wanting to run your own home business, then be creative and come up with your own money maker. Why work for someone else when there are so many ways for you to make a living working for yourself. Remember, as you work on your business you must... NEVER STOP BELIEIVING!! Microsoft Programs At least three Microsoft programs--Word, Excel and Internet Explorer-- offer full-screen views. These get rid of most toolbars, giving the work area of the programs more space. You can change to full-screen view by clicking on View. Then select Full Screen. But that raises the question: how do you get the toolbars back? Microsoft provides a small toolbar near the bottom of the page. Click Close Full Screen. With Internet Explorer, you're on your own. But getting the toolbars back is easy. Press Alt-v and Full Screen. Everything returns to normal. That works with Word and Excel, too, if you have an older version. -------------------------- Thanks for your TIP today, Patsy! Beat wash day blues with laundry systems analysis by Cynthia Townley Ewer, Editor http//www.OrganizedHome.Com Systems analysis. So weighty. So professional. So mysterious. Yet nothing can streamline an organized home like a well-crafted set of household systems. Today in OrganizedHome.Com, we focus on laundry and clothing systems. What do they do? How do you develop them? What benefits will establishing laundry and clothing systems give to you and your family? Chances are, you already have these systems in place. After all, a system is just a set of organized items, decisions or actions, designed to work together to achieve a common end. In terms of an organized home, a clothing system, for example, would be a set of related decisions, actions or items, designed to work together to supply family members with an adequate supply of clean, well-fitting and appropriate clothes. However, there are systems, and there are systems. In a disorganized home, systems springs up unassisted. There's no thought or planning underlying them, so they don't work particularly well. Most of the time, the steps of the system are only instituted when things break down: there are no clean clothes, so someone does the wash. Yes, clothing gets clean, eventually--but there's tremendous waste of time, money, resources and family harmony built into haphazard systems. Does this scenario describe your household's laundry system? It is the morning of a family outing with parent's in-laws. Child appears at breakfast table in stained, torn clothing. Parent orders child to change. Child replies that he has no clean clothes. Parent charges up the stairs to child's room. The floor is layered with strata of clean and dirty laundry. Dresser drawers are stuffed with wadded clothes in various states of cleanliness and presentability. Parent rummages through piles on floor, scrounges through dresser drawers, and locates a clean (or fairly clean) and presentable outfit. Parent orders child to put on substitute outfit. Child complains. Parent raises voice. Child whines. Veins stand out on the parental neck. Child complies. The ensemble is not a success. The trousers are the variety known as "high water pants." The T-shirt sports a cracked and peeling cartoon logo. Child rolls eyes and thinks, but does not say, "I told you so!" Parent receives child's message via telepathy. Parent winces but remains silent. Co-parent arrives at breakfast table wearing wrinkled shirt from ironing basket and yesterday's trousers. Co-parent's tie does not match either shirt or trousers. Co-parent slips out the door to work over the din of family discord concerning child and child's outfit. After breakfast, parent rifles through dryer, searching for presentable ensemble for self for outing. Must run dryer 10 minutes to remove heat-set wrinkles. Having only five minutes for this task, parent dons semi-wrinkled jeans and top. Hopes parents-in-law will forget their eyeglasses today. The family is late to the outing. The in-laws, bless them, say nothing. Parent vows to do better . . . until next time. Yes, this family has a system--but a spontaneous, haphazard one. Clothing is not washed on a regular schedule. Washing routines are interrupted, leaving clothes to sit in washer or dryer acquiring wrinkles and mildew. Clothes are neither consigned to laundry collection points when dirty, nor put in convenient storage once clean. Out-of-season, outgrown or outworn items crowd what storage is available, leaving little or no room to store garments currently in use. New clothing is purchased on an unplanned, impulse basis--and at a higher price than necessary. Because their system is so poorly planned and executed, this family loses time, money and harmony in the daily ritual of getting dressed. It's these resources of time, money and harmony your family stands to gain when you develop household systems. How do you craft a system to handle your family's clothing needs? Begin with the end: the goal or outcome of the system. A complete clothing system has this goal: the thrifty, efficient, and routine provision of clean, well-fitting and appropriate clothing for each family member each day. In any household systems analysis, give some thought to your own family's goal, and write it down. Beginning with the end in sight is the best way to make sure you arrive there! Break down the goal into the necessary tasks, decisions and actions. List them all! For your goal, write down each thing that must be done, large or small. Here are the basic tasks, decisions and action for a household laundry system: Dirty clothing is delivered to collection points each day Dirty clothing is transferred to laundry area from collection points Laundry area contains adequate supply of detergent, softener and stain treatments, as well as tools like washer, dryer, iron and ironing board, hangers and hanging area. Supplies are replenished before they are exhausted. Dirty clothing is sorted, laundered, dried and folded Necessary ironing is done or delegated Dry cleaning or professional laundry is delivered and collected each cycle Clean clothing is returned to storage areas The cycle is repeated on a regular basis The third step: analysis You know what you want and where you're going--the goal. You've got a handle on what needs to be done to reach that goal--your task list. Now it's time to analyze your system for the breakdowns. Our example family has several common sticking points in their laundry system. First, there's no clear "collection routine" for dirty laundry. Dirty clothes aren't placed in a hamper or basket, but are left around at random. The family member responsible for laundering the clothing has no set place to find dirty clothes, but must scour the house looking for them. Second, laundry isn't done on a regular schedule. Instead of washing clothes before it is absolutely necessary, this family plays a brinkmanship game, waiting until the last possible moment to start the laundry cycle. Result: tension, disruption, family disharmony and no clean clothes. Third, because the cycle isn't started regularly, it becomes a monstrous job, often left unfinished. Pants hung directly from the dryer need no ironing. Pants left to sit in the dryer for three days will require pressing at a minimum, re-washing at worst. By postponing the job, the family's workload mushrooms. Fourth, the family's clothing storage areas are cluttered and inefficient. Because drawers are jammed, clean clothing ends up on floors and furniture. Clothes are washed more than necessary, wearing them out prematurely--not to mention the wear and tear on the family member who must try to climb the mountain that's formed in the laundry room. What are your family's roadblocks to an efficient laundry system? Review the necessary tasks and decide what changes will make your own system function smoothly. Will you need to purchase additional laundry baskets or hampers? Has Mt. Washmore erupted in your laundry room, requiring a laundry marathon before you can institute your system? Your own situation will show a mix of new routines and one-time catch-up chores. Here's an idea of our family's laundry system analysis. It has two parts--the system, organized by time period, and the list of work that will have to be completed to institute the system: Household Clothing System: Daily: Family members place all dirty clothing in basket or hamper Twice Weekly: Collect, wash, dry, fold and replace laundered clothing Remove clean items in need of mending to mending basket Weekly: Check supply of detergent and laundry products; purchase replacements before the supply is exhausted Deliver any dry cleaning or laundered items to cleaners and collect last week's dry cleaning or laundered items Monthly: Scan family calendar for events requiring special clothing For those events, check to make sure each family member has appropriate clothing Mend contents of mending basket Seasonally : Inventory each family member's clothing supply Cull clothing storage of worn out, outgrown or out-of-season garments List needed items for each family member Purchase needed items, on sale To Catch Up: Purchase laundry basket or hamper for each family member Cull and organize each family member's clothing storage area, removing outworn, outgrown, and out-of-season clothing. Store out-of-season clothing, children's clothing suitable for handing down Marathon laundry session, extinguishing laundry mountain Hold family meeting to discuss new responsibilities, delegate tasks Through their analysis, this family has overcome the "day late, dollar short" orientation that characterized their old clothing and laundry systems. Now, to implement the analysis! Last step: get cracking! You've set your goal, listed the components of a basic system, performed your analysis and planned your system. Now it's time to get to work. Enter all tasks, recurring or catch-up, in your planner, calendar or home management software. If these are the bones of a basic family clothing system, remember, the musculature of that system can be shaped to fit any given family's needs. A laundry system for a household with two pre-schoolers and an infant will be vastly more rigorous and time-consuming than one for an empty-nest professional couple. Growing children can, and should, be given an opportunity to learn these life-skills. Pre-schoolers can be trained to place dirty clothing where it belongs, and can fold and replace socks and towels. Elementary school children can operate the washer and dryer and do basic ironing chores with supervision. Teens can do all of the above, plus mending and more advanced ironing. Do delegate clothing selection and purchase to your teen! A clothing allowance teaches appearance-oriented teens to budget like no other learning experience. Don't rescue your teen when he blows his seasonal clothes allowance on that shoddy-but-fashionable logo jacket! As he shivers his way through the autumn, he will learn some home truths about value and durability, and do better next quarter. In the end, establishing a household system--for laundry or any other home task--means embracing a simple but profound truth. Even if you ignore it, work does not go away. Do any job efficiently and with forethought, and you'll be master of the task. To this end, a laundry system will serve you well, providing clean clothes on a regular basis, without those anguished vigils at the side of the humming dryer. Ignore this reality, and the task will master you. You'll dance to the tune of your family's laundry needs, running the dryer at 5:30 a.m., or squirming as your children attend events in mismatched or outgrown clothes. Who will be boss? Time to establish your household's clothing systems and scale the top of Mt. Washmore. Excelsior! |

The Importance of Content Scott F. Geld "The content is very important". It's true that this line has become monotonous, but you would still hear it more often from all the marketing icons. The reason is quite plain and simple; when you have a web presence, Content is the thing that attracts customers and retains their attention. It is the one and only mean, which would bring customers to your website and turn leads into sales through all your advertising campaigns. This is what you are selling, and you should hit right on the bull's eye for it. No place of compromise when it comes to content of your website. If you do not feel confident enough of writing great content yourself, it's better to hire a good writer to do it for you. But before choosing an appropriate copywriter, you should know whether he possess Search Engine Marketing (SEM) / Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) copywriting experience or not. This is the most important point, as your have a commercial website which is selling your business, and your main aim is to bring traffic to your website. So an adept person, with an experience of SEM/SEO, can do wonders for your business. With clear, concise and compelling information presented attractively about your product and service, you hope to move the visitor to view your web site favorably when determining their action. Descriptive and reflective website content with rich information about product and service targeted to sell, makes way towards success. Internet sales got doubled in the last decade, even when the economy was struggling. In this light, you would have been surprised to know that large fancy corporate websites and dot-coms are losing money. Most of the time you can't even locate what is on the sale at their website. When visitors hit your home page, they want to know your identity and what you can do for them. Just fancy sites don't sell, strong content does. This same painstaking consideration is rarely given to the search engines that are the determining factor in your ranking position, which they assign your web site. Your search engine ranking is the key to the amount of visitors, and the success of your website, finally. So, give importance to the content you have on your website and do all the things necessary to promote your web business. Hard work always pays; contrary to no work, no pay. Learn and analyze what other people are doing. Learn about success stories and implement them in your business plans. Everyone is making money on the web; so can you. Some are making less and some are making more but there is a whole world out there to be explored. Avail the infinite opportunity and get your bank account swelled! Scott F. Fall Tips For Planting Trees and Shrubs
For those folks who live in growing zones 6, 7 and 8, October, November and early December is a good time to plant your trees or shrubs because roots become active during winter months in storing nutrient reserves for the next season. Also water requirements are generally much less during winter months. However in sandy soil situations which do not hold moisture as well as other soil types, the addition of our water-retentive product, Sponget will help reduce short term drought stress. First you need to select a tree or shrub that fits the site you desire to plant in. Read the information available on the tree or shrub. For example: you wouldn't plant a birch tree in an area that is usually dry, (birches prefer a moist soil.) How tall and wide will the tree be at maturity? It is very sad to see a beautiful tree cut down only because it has become too big for the site. Are there overhead wires above? This is a common problem, which is easy to avoid by choosing trees that don't grow tall. Does the tree or shrub need a protected site? You shouldn't plant a dogwood or rhododendron in a windy open area. If you choose the proper tree for the conditions it will live in you won't have to struggle to keep it alive and healthy. Experts used to advise you dig the hole deeper and wider than the root ball. The advice now is to only dig the hole as deep as the root ball but at least two times wider. This keeps the tree or shrub from sinking as the soil settles while allowing the feeder roots to grow out into the looser and generally more fertile top-soil. Soil amendments (direct to the planting hole) are also discouraged since most tree roots have a natural spreading tendency and need to acclimate to indigenous soils as quickly as possible. Or, if you dig this nice wonderful 'bowl' newly growing roots tend to stay right there, circling around and around, not venturing out into the soil that isn't so great. And if your soil is hard clay you will need to dig up a larger area than two times larger than the root ball. It is very helpful to get a wheelbarrow, garden cart or even a tarp to hold the soil you are going to dig up. After you have dug the hole use your shovel or a fork to loosed the soil around the hole. This helps open up the compacted soil for the roots to grow into. Place your tree or shrub into the hole. Add some soil to support the tree while you check all the way around to make sure it is standing up straight and is facing the direction you desire. The top of the root ball, (where the trunk widens and roots flare out), should be at or above the soil level. If the root ball is too low you can possibly add soil to the bottom of the hole with your shovel, moving the root ball from side to side to get soil underneath. If it is too high you will need to remove the tree and dig deeper. Now is the time to fix anything not proper, not after the hole is refilled with soil. If the root ball has burlap or a wire cage remove at least the top half being careful not to cause the ball to fall apart. Burlap under the ball will rot. Fill the hole in with soil halfway. Make any further adjustments. Water the soil to fill in any air pockets and help settle the soil. Fill in the remainder of the hole. Water the soil thoroughly with a slow stream of water. You need a hose for this job or several buckets of water to adequately settle the soil. Mulch the area around the tree with a few inches of mulch. Keep the mulch from touching the trunk. Moist mulch can encourage rot, pests or disease. Water your newly planted tree or shrub if rainfall does not provide adequate moisture up until the ground freezes. If soils are severely compacted (from new home construction, for example) now is a good time to add our Shrubs Alive. Apply some six inches from the outer perimeter of the planting hole. This will aid in recreating the desired soil texture necessary for your trees future growth. Once your tree is properly positioned, it may need support. Tree Supports help keep young trees from being rocked by strong winds, which damage developing roots. Tree Supports provide integrated support to hold young trees stable but allow for enough “give” for normal sway. Our patented Tree Support is especially designed to accommodate this. Small trunks will need protection from rodent damage and sunscald. Tree Guards offer protection to tender young bark from animals as well as from sunscald (caused by Winter sun reflected off of snow). Tree Guards are easy to apply and should be removed in Summer months. If you choose the right tree or shrub for your site and plant it properly you can plan on enjoying it for many years to come. I had something happen to me this evening. Red and I decided to go out to eat instead of cooking. We opted for a fast food drive in establishment. When our food was delivered, we started to say our blessing and the food server asked us to pray for her husband. I was suprised to day the least. We have never before had a stranger come to our table or truck before and ask to be included in our prayers. We were humbled. My question to you is, "Have you ever thought included the people around you in your prayers?" I have to be honest, I have never before thought about them. Usually we get a couple of "looks" or all out stares. On one occasion, we even had a gentleman come up to our table. My point I am trying to make, we have grown into a society that "takes care of our own." Including an "outsider" is usually looked upon with dread and apprehension. It should not be. A couple of reasons are crime and "what is in it for me" has contributed to our nonchalent attitude toward strangers. What are your thoughts on "helping a stranger"? |

Be a Better Mom! by Colleen Langenfeld Copyright (c) 2003 Do you feel frazzled? Are you struggling with thoughts of being overwhelmed? Does simply keeping up seem to be all you ever accomplish? Take heart! Often when we feel this way, help is just a matter of tweaking what we already know. Use the following list to fine- tune your ability to improve the quality of your efforts as a mom, spouse and careerwoman. -*- Time out for yourself. All of you. This includes quiet time for prayer or meditation, pampering and exercise time to give your body the care it needs, and the opportunity to indulge a hobby or two you enjoy. Taking time for yourself means filling up your physical, mental, emotional and spiritual fuel tanks, understanding that if you want to do and be a lot, you must nurture and re-fill a lot. -*- Get organized. If you have heard this one more times than you can count but don't even know where to start, listen up. Try doing your homework before jumping in on every organizing idea that comes down the pike. First, ask yourself what you REALLY need. Is it personal support? Structured checklists? Help figuring out what your priorities are? Remember to look at both personal and professional scenes here. Once you get clear on your true organizing needs, you'll be in a much better position to find the information and assistance that you can use to genuinely improve your situation. Still feeling too overwhelmed to tackle this one? Pick out the one chaotic part of your life that bugs you the most and resolve to make it better. Don't worry about anything else until you have made progress in that one area. If it helps, go at it with a friend. Change is tough; remember to give yourself regular, tangible pats on the back. -*- Manage your money. If you are carrying too much debt for your personal mental health, it's time to do something about it. We are all different, and one person's cash flow management is another's sleepless nights. If you find you are worrying about money on a regular - even daily - basis, take steps to make it better. No matter how hard it may be to clean up your finances; relentless, nonproductive stress is worse. Give yourself the opportunity to feel better! - *- Get help when you need it. Parenting is hard work! Sometimes it's confusing, too. Not only do babies not come with manuals, but being a mom requires you blaze a new trail in uncharted territory. In addition, you may not know the results of your efforts for long periods of time, even years. The bottom line? Trust yourself, and when you wish you had some more information, guidance, or perspective, get it. Find a parent you admire whose children are farther down the road of life and offer to buy them lunch and chat. Schedule an appointment with your clergy. Call your local social services office and ask what parenting resources are available in your area. Remember that people asking for help rarely run into big trouble. It's the people who refuse to ask for help that sometimes run off cliffs. -*- Your career. Is it what you really want? Are you happy and satisfied with your professional work? If not, simply taking control of your life's work will make you feel much better and those around you are sure to benefit, too. Get additional training, look into better opportunities, discover your business options. Developing a plan of self-discovery could lead you into a whole new life. -*- Your relationships. In your lifetime you will have many relationships. Among them you can count friends, probably a spouse, maybe children and there is always that pesky extended family! Not to mention coworkers and professional attachments. As a busy mom, you spend way too much time with these people to harbor resentments or pretend no one ever gets under your skin. Two rules of thumb when it comes to relationships are: 1. If possible, heal any old rifts. 2. Don't sweat the small stuff. People are notorious for being unkind, selfish, forgetful, nosy...in other words, human. It is wise to develop a bit of a tough exterior for dealing with the day in and day out bumps and jolts of human relationships. On the other hand, if you've been genuinely wounded, or if you know you've hurt another person in your life, do yourself and the people around you a huge favor and seek to heal these painful experiences. It's not possible to go back and rewrite the past, but it is possible to write a brand new future. -*- Think about what you want for your children long-term. What is your main parenting goal? Most of all, do you wish health and happiness for your little ones? A productive life? Knowledge of God and their fellow-man? Social service? Clarifying what you believe and what you choose to help your children grasp onto will help you tremendously in the day-to-day decisions you must make as a parent. Knowing where you are guiding your kids will bring meaning into your routine and a sense of vital stability to your family. -*- Enjoy them! Relax! Guide your small children into being people who are enjoyable to be around. Laugh with them. Listen to them. Encourage them. BE THERE for them. Everyone deserves to be number one in someone's life. The old adage that children spell 'time', Y-O-U is very true. In fact, it's really one of the few things they are looking for from you. Most importantly, see yourself in the equation of your life as the powerful, profound central figure that you truly are. The good news? You have daily choices that only you control, often simple choices that you can use to shape your family life into more of the blessing you long it to be. So you want to be a better mom? Don't fall into the trap of working harder. Concentrate on the basics and watch your family bloom! ========================= Colleen Langenfeld delivers deals, tips and creative resources to working moms who want the most out of their homes, families and careers at http://www.paintedgold.com . The Animal Rescue Site is having
trouble getting enough people to click on their link daily
to meet their quota to getting free food donated every day to abused
and neglected animals. It takes less than a minute to go to their
site and click on "feed an animal in need" for free. This doesn't
cost you a thing. Their corporate sponsors/advertisers use the number
of daily visits to donate food to abandoned/neglected animals in
exchange for advertising.
Here's the web site! Pass it along to people you know. http://www.theanimalrescuesite.com =============================================== But Baby, It's Cold Outside! Recognizing and Treating Canine Hypothermia and Frostbite written by Vikki Fenton-Anderberg Search and rescue personnel are trained to recognize and treat hypothermia and frostbite in the victim and their fellow searchers. Canine handlers must remember to consider the same possibility in their four legged partners. HypothermiaHypothermia occurs when the core body temperature falls below the normal range (99 to 100 degrees Fahrenheit). This occurs when heat loss exceeds heat production. Loss of body heat occurs through four primary mechanisms. Conduction is an exchange of heat between two objects of different temperatures, such as from the warm dog to the cold rock upon which he is sitting. Convection is the loss of heat due to the movement of air from around the body. An example of Convection is when wind carries away warmed air from around the dog and replaces it with colder air which the dog then needs to warm back up. Radiation is known as the transfer of heat by an infrared process between two objects of different temperatures. Evaporation of water from the skin, mucous membranes, and through the respiratory passages is also a significant source of heat loss. If a human gets cold they will attempt to reduce heat loss by adding clothing, seeking shelter, and /or eating. The dog’s only conscious action is an attempt to optimize heat production and minimize heat loss by seeking shelter from the cold. There are some involuntary body responses which are the key to heat conservation and production: Piloerection, the erection of the individual hair follicles causing the hair to stand up, minimizes loss of heat to the environment by creating a zone of trapped air that acts as an additional layer of insulation. Vasoconstriction, causing the blood vessels to become smaller thus carrying less blood flow, in peripheral tissues directs blood away from exposed surfaces (feet, ears, and face) toward the core where it is most needed by the body. Shivering, which is an involuntary heat generating response by the skeletal muscles to cold conditions, is the primary heat producing activity. Piloerection and vasoconstriction try to conserve heat, while shivering tries to generate it. Hypothermia can be divided into 3 categories. Mild: Above 36 C or 96 F. Shivering is increased. Lethargy and increased muscle tone are noted. Moderate: 32-34 C or 90-94 F. Typified by stupor, incoordination , loss of shivering reflex, and unconsciousness. Severe: 28-26 C or 82-86 F. Collapse, agonal breathing, and fixed, dilated pupils. Field treatment of hypothermia focuses on prevention of further heat loss. Passive rewarming includes insulating from cold surfaces, gently drying the dog; wrapping in blankets, towels or “space blanket”; and body to body contact. It is not necessary the handler to remove all of his own clothing, but curl around the dog so that there is as much body contact as possible depending on the size of the dog . Covering both with a sleeping bag, or jacket will help prevent further heat loss. Watch carefully for painful rewarming reactions as the dog may strike out and injure the handler or itself. Active external rewarming is applied only to the thorax (the core) of the dog. Methods used include: a circulating warm water blanket wrapping only the thorax; a warm water bath, taking care to leave the extremities and head out; heat packs and hot water bottles placed around the dog to create a “warm tent “ of air; and heat lamps and floor heaters. The treatment needs to take place in a controlled environment where the temperature of the water and the dog can be closely monitored. Precautions include: monitoring the hot water bottles to insure that the heat does not flux back from the dog to the bottles; avoiding direct contact with skin to prevent possibility of burns; and placing a thermometer between the lamps and the dog. Internal rewarming is generally reserved for severely hypothermic animals and includes: warmed IV fluids and inspired air; peritoneal dialysis; and flushing stomach or rectum with warm isotonic fluids. This is only done in a hospital setting under the care of a veterinarian. Frostbite The definition of frostbite is the same for all mammals: damage to tissue caused by subfreezing temperatures. The severity of the frostbite is based on the extent of blistering, swelling, and skin color of the affected tissue.
In dogs, the early signs of frostbite are easily missed as the areas affected are usually covered with hair. These areas are the ear tips, tail, scrotum, and face. When frozen or near-frozen, the skin appears very pale. As the skin warms, it becomes reddened and the area becomes painful. Eventually the skin becomes scaly. If the circulation has been severely affected, the tips or edges of the tissue may slough off . Severe cases of frostbite may necessitate amputation of the affected tissue. If amputation is necessary, this determination is made over a length of time which depends on the severity of the frostbite. The affected area will have a definite line (demarcation) between live and dead tissue. First aid in the early stages, when the tissue is still soft, involves warming the affected tissue with warm water. Do not massage the area as this may cause the release of toxins which may further damage already impaired tissues. Instead, gently apply a protective Vaseline- based ointment and cover the area if possible. If the ointment is warm, it will spread more easily, especially in those areas covered with hair. This can be done in the field by placing the ointment tube next to your skin. If the tissue is not malleable and/or the possibility of refreezing exists, don’t attempt field rewarming. Instead transport to base or to a veterinarian ASAP. The rewarming that can occur during transport in a warm vehicle is painful. Do not turn the heat on high, but keep the vehicle at a cool to moderate temperature. If possible, the handler should not be driving but should sit with or hold the dog to prevent the scratching or biting at the painful area. Recommended Cold Weather First Aid Kit Additions For handlers who frequent working their dogs in cold weather conditions, these addtions to their first aid kits should be considered:
Prevention of frostbite and hypothermia is possible by observing your dog frequently and providing the necessary support before trouble arrives. If your dog does not have an adequate coat, provide it with an artificial coat. Have a pad to insulate the dog from the cold ground when it must be in one place. Make sure that when you take a break and warm up, you get out the pad and give food and water. Check the temperature of the ears, scrotum and face, watching for signs of frostbite. As the “thinking” 1/2 of the team, it is the handler’s responsibility to monitor the canine partner thus helping to continue on a search that may depend on the team. http://www.absarokasearchdogs.org |

The delicate pink or white, bell-shaped blossoms are covered with tiny flecks that are said to be fairy fingerprints. Foxglove derives its folk names of fairy gloves and fairy caps from these splendid blossoms, which became props when the fairies played dress up. Other names include fox's glew and, because of the poison found in its exquisite "cups," witch's thimble and bloody bells. Digitalin, obtained from the blossoms of foxglove, is used to treat heart ailments. Order a copy today! |
