King James Version

Genesis 12.

The Book of Genesis

Return to Index

Chapter 13

1

And Abram went up out of Egypt, he, and his wife, and all that he had, and Lot with him, into the south.

2

And Abram was very rich in cattle, in silver, and in gold.

3

And he went on his journeys from the south even to Bethel, unto the place where his tent had been at the beginning, between Bethel and Hai;

4

Unto the place of the altar, which he had make there at the first: and there Abram called on the name of the LORD.

5

And Lot also, which went with Abram, had flocks, and herds, and tents.

6

And the land was not able to bear them, that they might dwell together: for their substance was great, so that they could not dwell together.

7

And there was a strife between the herdmen of Abram's cattle and the herdmen of Lot's cattle: and the Canaanite and the Perizzite dwelled then in the land.

8

And Abram said unto Lot, Let there be no strife, I pray thee, between me and thee, and between my herdmen and thy herdmen; for we be brethren.

9

Is not the whole land before thee? separate thyself, I pray thee, from me: if thou wilt take the left hand, then I will go to the right; or if thou depart to the right hand, then I will go to the left.

10

And Lot lifted up his eyes, and beheld all the plain of Jordan, that it was well watered every where, before the LORD destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah, even as the garden of the LORD, like the land of Egypt, as thou comest unto Zoar.

11

Then Lot chose him all the plain of Jordan; and Lot journeyed east: and they separated themselves the one from the other.

12

Abram dwelled in the land of Canaan, and Lot dwelled in the cities of the plain, and pitched his tent toward Sodom.

13

But the men of Sodom were wicked and sinners before the LORD exceedingly.

14

And the LORD said unto Abram, after that Lot was separated from him, Lift up now thine eyes, and look from the place where thou art northward, and southward, and eastward, and westward:

15

For all the land which thou seest, to thee will I give it, and to thy seed for ever.
Acts 7:5

16

And I will make thy seed as the dust of the earth: so that if a man can number the dust of the earth, then shall thy seed also be numbered.

17

Arise, walk through the land in the length of it and in the breadth of it; for I will give it unto thee.

18

Then Abram removed his tent, and came and dwelt in the plain of Mamre, which is in Hebron, and built there an altar unto the LORD.

Genesis 14

       Mistakes Are Supposed To Happen!
       by Ken Darby

On the first day of college, the Dean addressed
the students, pointing out some of the rules.

"The female dormitory will be out-of-bounds for all
male students, and the male dormitory to the female
students. Anybody caught breaking this rule will be
fined $20 the first time."

He continued, "Anybody caught breaking this rule the
second time will be fined $60.  Being caught a third
time will incur a hefty fine of $180.  Are there any
questions?"

At this point, a male student in the crowd inquired:

"How much for a season pass?"

While I am sure the Dean did not intend the "perception"
of what he was saying to be as the student seemed to grasp,
he made the mistake of making his point in a way that was
easy for the student to think that way. It was a mistake.

We all make them. In fact we are supposed to make them.
The real truth of the matter is we would never in a zillion
years be successful if we did not make mistakes.

All of life is move forward, adjust course, move forward,
adjust again, move forward again. Many of the adjustments
along the way are sponsored by the mistakes we make.

Mistakes are nothing to be ashamed of. A mistake is simply
a mistake and has no emotional overtones to cause you
embarrassment or other poor feelings, unless, of course,
you allow it.

Embrace mistakes. Make them yours. Understand the
lessons they offer. Be exceedingly happy you are making
mistakes, for it is a truth that for every one you make you
are simply one step closer to the success you want.

A friend of mine runs a car dealership. When he is hiring
people he goes looking for the mistakes, the trouble in
their lives. His philosophy is that if a man isn't making
mistakes he isn't doing anything. If he isn't doing anything
my friend does not want him on staff. My friend wants action.
My friend wants people moving forward. He is well aware
that if someone is not making mistakes he isn't moving
forward.

The fact is neither are you or I. If we aren't making
mistakes we aren't going anywhere.

A positive way to look at it is that mistakes make you money.
Go for it - move forward, make mistakes, adjust, and move
forward some more. The process can make you wealthy.

HTML Tips

SIZE MATTERS - WEBPAGE SIZE THAT IS...
by Theresa Cahill
Copyright 2003
All Rights Reserved

Putting together a website? Wondering if everyone will
get a good look at the entire presentation when they
arrive? One way to ensure they do is in your initial page
setup.

When the typewriter ruled, and the 8-1/2x11 sheet of paper
was king, layout was much easier. You always knew how much
space you had to work with, what to set your margins
to, and what size the type would end up when you pressed
the keys.

Then along came the word processor and its various flexible
components. Layout changed. Tiny things we'd all done
forever, such as double spacing after the end of every
sentence, are no longer necessary. Word processing allowed
for (and still does) a vast array of page tweaking and
layout design - from font size and color to table
arrangements and graphics. But this article isn't about
word processing.

We didn't stop there... some bright group of individuals
developed the internet and the webpage with its HTML
coding was born. And with that birth, our whole outlook on
how to design, how to use that "piece of paper" flew out
the window.

No longer is it a sheet of paper but someone's monitor
screen size and resolution that we must keep in mind during
our design and layout phase. With screens from 13 inches
and up, we've got to be prepared for all visitors. And with
a wide range of audience ages, font size becomes critical.
Choose sizes too large and your website looks amateurish,
choose sizes too small and your viewer most likely will run
for the hills versus readjusting their browser (which they
could do, but most likely won't).

So what is the ideal page layout? How is it accomplished?

The simplest way after setting your page background color
is to create an overall webpage table. Picture this first
table as your 8-1/2x11 sheet of paper. Inside that piece of
paper you'll create even more tables, opening and closing
them as you go along, but ultimately ending the entire
page - just before the total webpage closing tags with your
overall webpage table closing tags.

A typical layout that lends itself well to just about any
presentation of material might look like this (see my ezine
webpage at http://www.thewizworld.com to get a visual idea
only - and while you are there resize your viewing window
to see how it automatically adjusts for you):

=============================================

(Note: replace * for < or > when coding your page)

*body background="#4682B4"*
*center*
*table width="80%" border="1" bgcolor="#FFFFFF" cellspacing="1" cellpadding="8"*
*tr*
*td valign="top" align="center" width="10%" bgcolor="#FFFFFFF"*

First column of information

*/TD*
*TD WIDTH="90%" VALIGN=top*

Second column of information

*/td*
*/tr*
*/table*
*/center*

================================================

The absolutely most important attribute for this entire page
is the coding of the page WIDTH.

Many webpages are created using a fixed table size. Setting
your WIDTH using percentages though allows your page to
automatically resize itself for each individual visitor.

You can also place a fixed value inside the quote marks,
but here's the rub. Even widths of 700-750 will be too wide
for most browser windows. This will force your reader to
scroll from left to right. You will lose them since most
people will only put up with that for so long before they
give up and leave.

A good suggestion would be to work within a page layout of
650 or less if you truly must choose a fixed width.

My second website, http://www.mywizardads.com, uses a fixed
table width of 600. The tables within the overall table
adhere to the 600 width also, with their individuals columns
set with adjustable percentages.

Granted, with the fixed table size a person will only be
able to downsize their browser screen to a given point before
some of the information is unviewable, but the 600 setting
works for most visitors and surfers.

=============================================

(Note: replace * for < or > when coding your page)

*table width="600" border="0" bgcolor="#000080" cellspacing="2"
cellpadding="10"*
*tr*
*td valign="top" align="center" width="95%" bgcolor="000080"*

Top portion of information

*/td*
*/tr*
*/table*

==============================================

Never, of course, take what belongs to another, but do surf,
right click and view source, and study different websites.
Teach yourself by hands on manipulation of the numbers within
your own HTML editor or notepad file what works and what
won't.

And do consider using a main overall table in which to nestle
additional individual tables. Use percentages or combinations
of one overall fixed width and individual percentage settings
inside your main- and sub-tables.

You've worked hard! Ensure your website is viewed as you
envisioned it.

How To Run Software With Screen Resolution Requirements

Some games and software programs require that your monitor
be set to 256 colors, with a screen resolution of 640 by 480
pixels. However, in Windows XP, when you go to the control
panel and click on display, the only color quality options
available are either 16 bit (medium) or 32 bit (high). And the
lowest screen resolution choice is 800 by 600 pixels.

So how do you run the program?

Many programs will switch your monitor to 256 colors
automatically when you start the program. For the programs
that don't, follow the steps below:

1. On your desktop or on the Start menu, right-click the game
or program you want to run in 256 colors, and then click
Properties.
2. Click the Compatibility tab.
3. Select "Run In 256 Colors" check box

Notes:

If your software program requires the screen resolution to be
640 by 480 pixels, or if it appears in a small window in the
center of your screen, you can increase its size by changing
your resolution temporarily. Follow the procedure above, but
in Step 3 select the "Run In 640 by 480 Screen Resolution"
check box.

Your screen resolution color and size will automatically
revert to its previous (default) resolutions when you close
the program.

You can also try switching to 256 colors if you ever experience
a software program showing the wrong color or if the graphics
are redrawing slowly.

5 Budget Ways to Warm Your Decor Through Winter

By Kathleen Wilson

Now that the holidays are over, and the decorations are put away, you may be wondering what now? Remember that Spring is still several months away, and you're best bet for keeping your rooms inviting during the dead of winter is to add warmth and comfort. And if you are like me and don't have a lot of extra cash laying around after the holiday crunch, use these ideas to make major changes in your rooms, for minor cash.

  1. Rearrange. Create more intimate furniture arrangements, or just try something new! Move seating to create areas where people can easily talk, or group them around the fireplace or other focal point.

  2. Use candles! Candles are relatively inexpensive, and should not be saved just for special occasions! Group them together, combine them with plants, or set them in front of a mirror. If you feel using them too often will cramp your budget, set aside one meal a week where you ceremoniously use them, such as Sunday dinner.

  3. Place throw blankets casually over chairs and sofas for your loved ones to cuddle up in. A great way to buy these inexpensively is to check your fabric store for clearance sales on polar fleece. Buy 1 to 1 ½ yards for each throw, then use scissors to cut fringe on the two ends. This fabric doesn't fray, comes in a wide array of patterns and solids, and does not need to be hemmed or sewn! I bought enough for several and paid less than five dollars for each throw! Oh, and did I mention it is extremely soft and warm?

  4. Set out well read books on end tables to encourage those in your home to use those throws, and who can not remember a fond winter's day cuddled up in a warm sofa with your favorite novel? (Oh, and you might want to stock your pantry with cocoa and tea, just in case.J)

  5. Layer your fabrics! Add one or two topper fabrics to your tables, layer several towels over each other in your bath and kitchen, add a valance to your window treatments. Remember this doesn't have to be expensive, use leftover fabric from your other projects, visit your local thrift store, or use unused quilts, coverlets, sheets, tablecloths, and cloth napkins from your linen closet.

All of these ideas are quick, easy, and inexpensive, and can be used throughout your rooms. So take a few hours and see how little changes can create cozy comfort in your own home.

Site Tools to Make Your Site Interesting

By Aaron Turpen of Aaronz WebWorkz

Once you have a website built and you begin to market it, you start to wonder if you should expand that website to make it more interesting for your users. Many websites use simple tools and techniques to expand the interactivity of their users' experience. If used correctly, these additions can be a great boost to traffic and return visitors.

--> Fr^e Tools Galore

For a huge menagerie of fr^e (and cheap) webmaster tools to add simple things like polls, hit counters, and more to your website, Hits For Me is a great place to start. Don't have CGI access? They host most of these scripts too! This is the best way to get started on your road to site interactivity:http://www.qksrv.net/click-1357406-342333

--> Bulletin Board/Message Board Systems

Have you ever been to About.com, Yahoo!, or another message system and wondered if you could put one of those on your website? If you have enough traffic to support one, a bulletin board (message board) system is a great addition to any site. Although fairly time-consuming to set up on a site, they can be well worth it once visitors begin talking and coming back regularly to keep talking! They are a lot of fun and a great resource for return visitors. I recommend vBulletin as the system of choice because it is scalable, robust, and easily fits into a current website's design:http://www.qksrv.net/click-1357406-1163318

--> Branded Screensavers

Screensavers, while not really a website tool, are a great way to "brand" your business, website address, etc. and can be given away for fr^e from your website. This allows users to install it on their system and see your business every time their screensaver kicks in. A great place to make your own screensaver at a very decent price is See You Again Screensaver:http://www.qksrv.net/click-1357406-5643780

--> Interactive Photo Albums

For many, interactive photo albums are a big draw for their site. If you have a community of users, an interactive gallery is a great amount of fun. Large galleries of photos are also hard to manage. For tools to manage these types of problems, I usually use and recommend PhotoPost:http://www.qksrv.net/click-983614-6308411

--> Animated Graphics

Do you have a fun or children-oriented website? Animated graphics are a great way to add a splash to those sites! Warning: too many of these or inappropriate use of them can make a good site ugly. That said, they are a lot of fun! There are a lot of fr^e animated graphics to be found online. One of my favorite places to start is the Animation Factory:http://www.qksrv.net/click-1357406-10283154

--> Site Search

Do you have a lot of information on your website and want to add one of those search tools that searches only your website? There are a lot of fr^e tools out there to do this, but most are ad-driven and post a lot of ads in front of your users. I recommend Fusion Bot as the best site search tool for regular websites and best of all, their basic search tool is FR^E! Try them out:http://www.qksrv.net/click-1357406-5902056

--> Links Management

A link exchange is a fun way to create visibility and link-recognition for your website (getting you higher ranks in search engines to boot). I rarely recommend a full reciprocal-link system as they tend to look ugly on websites and rarely garner quality links as they usually degenerate into fr^e-for-all madhouses. It's always better to do them "by hand" and get better links to sites that are complimentary to your own. Setting up, checking, and managing those links is a lot of work, though, so I recommend Links Manager as a good tool to automate some of the more tedious aspects of it:http://www.qksrv.net/click-1357406-5439514

--> Traffic Analysis

Read Craig's article below if you have access to your web logs. If you don't have access to them or you want more comprehensive, real-time statistics, you will need an online solution for analyzing your website's traffic. I recommend Index Tools for that:http://www.qksrv.net/click-1357406-5789026

So start planning on your site's expansion today! Well-used and thought out interactivity is a great way to make a website fun for its users and, more importantly for you, more heavily visited!

October Tips
Gardener's Paradise
  • BULBS

    • Lift and store Begonia, Dahlia and Gladiolus.
    • Mark dormant bulbs so they won't be destroyed when ground is prepared for spring planting.
    • Be ready when the shipments of bulbs such as Crocus, Daffodils, Irises, Day lilies, Freesias, Hyacinth and Tulips arrive at nurseries; then plant immediately.
    • Early shopping guarantees best selections.
    • Water well to encourage root development and cover with plenty of mulch.

  • FLOWERS:

    • October is the best month to transplant Perennials. Enrich beds with organic soil amendment.
    • Keep Marigolds blooming until the frost arrives. Feed, water and pick faded blooms. Shelter frost-tender plants or over winter cuttings.
    • Lift and divide plants that have finished blooming. Divide and re plant... Daisies, Callas, and Day lilies every few years for best bloom.
    • Remove suckers from Roses and Lilac. Spray or dust Roses to discourage mildew.

  • VEGETABLES:

    • Store carrots in ground if they are in well drained soil.
    • By mid-October, or if frost is predicted, pick all tomatoes, whether they are ripe or not. Refrigerate or freeze ripe tomatoes.
    • Wrap green tomatoes or hang the entire plants (with unpicked fruit) upside down. Alternatively these can be stored in a brown paper bag in a cool dark area.
    • In late October cut back asparagus stalk to the ground. Mark the location. Mulch 3 to 4 inches.
    • Prepare vegetable beds for spring and remove all debris.

  • GENERAL YARD & GARDEN CARE:

    • Clean up the planting areas as you harvest fruit, flowers, vegetables. Rake up fallen leaves and fruit. Compost all disease- free organic refuse. Destroy all disease infected refuse.
    • Protect container plants for winter. Mulch tender plants that can't be moved.
    • Continue watering lawns, trees, shrubs, vines and all new plantings until the rains come. Don't forget to water plants in sheltered areas. Well-watered plants survive freezing temperatures better than dry ones.
    • Prune trees and shrubs so that the air can flow through them freely in winter.
    • Cover open compost heaps with plastic when there are signs of heavy rains.
    • Set out a dish of beer for your slugs now. Remove dead slugs daily.

  • FRUIT & BERRIES:

    • Spray your trees for peach leaf curl if they were victims this year.
    • Apply a dormant spray to reduce over wintering pests and fungus diseases when the leaves fall from fruit trees.
    • Mulch fruit and berries well to preserve moisture in the soil. They need alot of water. They are the only food that contain approximately 80% water.
    • Set out strawberries during fall rains for fruit next June. If planted in spring, plants won't bear well until the following year.

  • LAWNS:

    • Cut back ground covers that have spread out of bounds. Prune vines and summer-blooming heather.
    • Plant flat and slightly sloped areas with ground cover so roots will get a head start before winter. Do not plant steep slopes or the rains will wash plants away.
    • Sow seeds for new lawns. If there is an early frost be sure to keep the ground moist so the seedlings will continue to develop roots until the ground freezes.
    • Grass grows best this time of year in the cooler, wetter conditions.

Popcorn Balls

by Wendy Kennedy

Compared to most snack foods, popcorn is low in calories. Air- popped popcorn has only 30 calories per cup. If you oil-pop it the calorie count is 55/cup. Even lightly drizzled with butter, it's only 90-120 calories per cup. Popcorn is also a source of high- quality carbohydrates and high in fiber ( or, put simply, it takes longer to chew and makes you feel full longer!). So - go ahead - treat yourself (guilt free) to a bowl of popcorn.

And when you're looking for a special treat - make popcorn balls! There's a few more calories but, oh my, they do taste good!

  1. Caramel Popcorn Balls ~

    1/3 cup butter or margarine
    1/2 cup corn syrup
    1 cup brown sugar
    1 tsp. vanilla
    10 cups popped popcorn

    Melt the butter in a soup pot. Add corn syrup, brown sugar, and vanilla. Stir & bring to a boil. Remove from heat. Add popcorn & mix in. Put waxed paper on your countertop. Form popcorn balls and lay on wax paper to harden. Makes about a dozen balls.

    These stay fairly soft (a little easier on the teeth!).

  2. Popcorn Balls ~

    10 cups popped popcorn
    1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
    1/2 cup water
    2/3 cup molasses
    1 tsp. vinegar
    1/4 tsp. salt
    3 tbs. butter or margarine

    Put sugar, water, molasses, vinegar and salt into a pot. Heat & stir until it starts to boil. Boil gently, without stirring, until it reaches the hard ball stage. Remove from heat. Add butter/ margarine. Pour over popcorn in a large bowl. Mix until popcorn is coated with syrup. Form into balls. Makes 12 - 15 popcorn balls.

    Hard ball stage is 270F or when you drop a bit in cold water and it forms a hard ball.

  3. Colored Popcorn Balls ~

    12 cups popped popcorn
    1.5 oz flavored gelatin (any color jello powder)
    1/2 cup granulated sugar
    1/2 cup light corn syrup

    Put gelatin, sugar & syrup into a pot. Heat & stir to dissolve. Bring to a rolling boil. Pour over popcorn in a large bowl (you can lightly salt popcorn first if you like). Stir until all popcorn is coated. Form into balls with lightly buttered hands (I spray with Pam!). Makes about a dozen popcorn balls.

    Use whatever color suits the occasion. For Halloween use orange jello. You can put `faces' on your popcorn balls with candy. For Christmas make a bowl full of red & green balls. For Easter use pastel colors.

The Brown University Child and Adolescent Behavior Letter April, 2001

The over-scheduled child: Avoiding the hyper-parenting trap.

Author/s: Alvin Rosenfeld

"Hyper-parenting" is the phrase we coined to describe a child-rearing style now prevalent in middle -- and upper middle-class homes. In these families, parents become over-involved in every detail of their children's academic, athletic and social lives. They over-enrich their children's environment and over-schedule them. Today's children get so much more than basic schooling. Many also participate on one or more teams, have lessons in music, art, foreign language and are tutored in school subjects. Although each activity may be valuable on its own, in aggregate these commitments leave parents and children frazzled, keep children from developing self-reliance and hurt families. Where do professionals observe hyper-parenting? Just about everywhere they look. They see it in the parents who already have established wonderfully enriching home lives who still feel compelled to enrich them further in order to "maximize" their childrens' "potential." These parents react to the latest science reported in the media -- which professionals know is of dubious validity -- by broadcasting Mozart into their infant's nursery to stimulate mathematical ability, enrolling toddlers in organized gymnastics programs (to fine-tune large motor development) and putting children too young to comprehend the rules of the game in competitive team sports. They insist that kids who are barely awake sit for 7 a.m. piano lessons and that high-schoolers manicure their resumes to fit profiles for which elite colleges are supposedly looking. Many contemporary parents see a parent's fundamental job as designing a perfect upbringing for their offspring, from conception to college. A child's success -- quantified by "achievements" like speaking early, qualifying tot a gifted and talented program or earning admission to an elite university -- has become the measure of parental accomplishment. That is why the most competitive adult sport is no longer golf. It is parenting. Despite knowing in their hearts that their families are over-scheduled, many parents keep pushing because they fear that cutting back could harm their beloved child's future. Numerous factors undergird hyperparenting, over-scheduling and the sleep-deprived children they produce. For one, contemporary expert advice as reported by the media implies that each child-rearing detail has crucial future implications. While Dr. Spock urged parents to trust themselves, today's parenting advice, with its tone of urgency and authority, raises parental anxiety to a fever pitch. And high anxiety brings out the worst in everyone. Schools pressure children further, often reacting with seemingly endless homework to politically motivated demands that they show "results" for the tax dollars they receive. Everyone knows that prematurity is bad for infants, yet it is being advocated for children. The incorrect belief that child development is absolutely linear also contributes to the frenzy, because it implies that any early advantage will keep a child ahead of others. Thus a child who reads early will score higher on the verbal SAT in their teens. So parents feel compelled to "jump start" their children to achieve milestones early and to develop skills faster.

For instance, a high proportion of children in private remedial educational programs are already performing above grade level. They are there to get even further ahead. Conversely, children at the lower end of any developmental task are often seen as candidates for emergency intervention. Certainly some children have developmental delays that require intervention -- but many children who walk late grow up to be excellent athletes without therapy in preschool while others who read late become wonderful writers. How does this life of constant scheduling and judgment, of unending evaluation of life's every aspect -- starting from speed-achieving milestones as infants, to early reading proficiency, to advanced achievement at tennis, ballet or creative writing -- feel to a child? How do we adults feel when we're scrutinized and graded on every action we take? (Has anyone had a micro-managing boss?) What reaction does it evoke when, say, our spouse does it to us? Just put yourself in a child's place. Hyper-parenting can damage children's self-esteem. The subliminal message children get from this constant scrutiny and hyperactivity is that they are inadequate in their current, unpolished state. "If I am as good as my parents say, why do I need constant enrichment? I'm probably not very good at all." This hyper lifestyle is an unappealing vision of the future, which may be why some children get away from parents by burying themselves in Gameboy, Nintendo or computer games, and why others -- very bright, promising students -- give up, say they don't think "it's" worth it, and drop out early. We suspect that this hyper-parenting way of life contributes to the increasing incidence of teenage depression, substance abuse and sexual "acting out." So what should parents do? Cutting back just 10 percent or less in scheduled activities can help families embrace sanity. Character development: and interpersonal relationships can become central again, as they should, by dc-emphasizing activities and accomplishments. Parents ought to enjoy their adulthood, which would make it a more attractive model for children. Most parents would benefit from less frenzy and more reflection. Saturday parents' night out would help everyone in the family. Parents who enjoy each other are happier, more relaxed and, most importantly, more genuinely generous. When they are with their children, parents need not be camp counselors, devising activities non-stop. It is even good for kids to be bored sometimes. Dealing with boredom stimulates inner life, creativity and imagination. Children need down time to think, discover, imagine, create inner worlds all their own and hear their inner voice -- the one that makes them draw a unique picture or write an unusual story. Surely parents ought to expect their children to make something of their lives. But showing a child that he or she is good, intelligent and loved is the most constructive (and indeed, necessary) support parents can offer. This maximizes healthy growth. But many parents are too anxious to have that inner conviction, and others who do fail to express it, which is just as destructive to a child. So instead, often without being conscious of doing so, many parents say -- through actions and gestures, if not in actual words -- that they are very nervous about their children's future. This subliminal message can and will undermine a child's self-esteem and create a self-fulfilling prophecy.

Childhood is a preparation, not a full performance. Children ought to enjoy hobbies and passions rather than working at them like part-time, unpaid jobs. Summers ought to be fun, not just opportunities to polish skills and pull ahead of the competition. Children are not supposed to excel, or even be good, at anything. They are, by definition, immature and unpolished. They are learning! Being unproductive together tells the child that the parent likes the child, as he or she is. As the song goes, "I love you just the way you are," which is the greatest gift a parent can give, the deep, inner conviction that children don't have to perform for their parents to love and cherish them. Once upon a time that was called "unconditional love." It is what all kids (all human beings, in fact,) need to truly succeed in life. It is what putting an end to over-scheduling and hyperparenting would help accomplish. Alvin Rosenfeld, M.D., is a child and adolescent psychiatrist practicing in New York City. Nicole Wise is a journalist who specializes in health and family issues. They have co-authored The Over-Scheduled Child: Avoiding the Hyper-Parenting Trap (Griffin/St. Martins, 2001; available in bookstores and on Amazon.com).

CANINE: TRAVEL BY AIR

In our mobile society, chances are your dog will travel with you at some time. When possible, prepare your pet by gradually exposing it to the elements or sequences of the trip. If your pet is not used to traveling, brief frequent trips are the best way to exposure it to this experience. The steps are detailed below. As long as your pet's basic comforts are attended to, the trip should go well. For short trips, remove food at least two hours before leaving. For longer trips, remove food several hours beforehand. You may feed your pet after the trip. Offer small amounts of water until an hour before travel. Depending on the length of the trip, water bowls may or may not be left in the carrier. Play with your pet or engage in some kind of positive interaction before you leave home. If your pet is well exercised before it is confined, it will be more comfortable. Make sure your dog has had a long walk before its confinement. Your pet will be less likely to become nauseated or to soil itself during confinement if it is given every opportunity to void before departure. Most pets become adjusted to travel with frequent travel opportunities. They may feel more secure if they're confined to a sturdy and well-ventilated carrier. Small dogs may learn to travel in a pet carrier. Large dogs may be confined behind special gates that section off the back of the motor vehicle.

Have your pet's general health evaluated by a veterinarian before you leave on a long trip. Ideally, this should not be left for the last minute. Vaccinations should also be updated at this time. If you are going out of the country, your veterinarian will be able to advise you regarding pet health problems prevalent at your destination.

Fear and anxiety during travel Regardless of the mode of transportation several behavioral problems may arise because of fear. Fear may cause excitability, agitation, hyperventilation, vocalization, aggressiveness, nausea, vomiting, defecation and urination. Destruction of the interior of your car or pet carrier may indicate fear or anxiety, particularly if the pet is isolated from you. A pet can turn its fear or anxiety against itself and engage in excessive self-grooming during the trip. Fearful responses to travel may worsen or remain relatively constant over time. Your pet may become fearful before a trip if it learns to recognize signs of departure. The stress of travel can decrease your pet's resistance to disease. Intense fear can result in serious illness in animals with undiagnosed or unapparent ailments.

USE OF SEDATIVES OR TRANQUILIZERS Tranquilizers or sedatives intended to ease your pet's fear during transport are usually not necessary. Such drugs should probably be preserved for pets that suffer from extreme fear or anxiety during travel, and should only be used at your veterinarians recommendation. The type of medication and dosage must be appropriate for your pet's age, basic temperament, degree of emotional upset during travel, duration of travel and physical status. Most drugs used for this purpose are short acting, with a peak affect lasting only several hours. For longer trips, it may not be worthwhile to sedate your pet, though it may help it through the first part of the trip. The risk of tranquilizing your pet must be weighed against the benefits. Some pets become more anxious when a tranquilizer begins to take effect. An unusual reaction to tranquilizers is to make a pet agitated and excitable. It may help to do a test run by giving a dose of the medication a few days before travel so to observe its effects on your pet. If your pet's only problem during travel is now as you are vomiting medication to combat motion sickness may be all that is required.

Designing with herbs. (non-traditional herb gardens)

Author/s: Lauren Bonar Swezey

Five Western herb gardens show a diversity of sizes, styles, and plants What's an herb garden? To some, It's any small patch of earth that produces basil, chives, oregano, and other culinary herbs that are snipped and pinched for cooking. To others, an herb garden means something much grander. It could be a formal layout with geometric brick paths, boxwood borders, and a mixture of culinary and medicinal herbs. Or it could be much more casual, with large beds of loosely arranged plants that include the broadest definition of an herb - a plant or plant part valued for its medicinal, savory, or aromatic qualities. In keeping with their generally casual lifestyles, Westerners don't seem constrained in their designs or by what goes in them. And rather than being herbal purists, most add dashes of color with annuals and perennials. We found five gardens, from Southern California to the Pacific Northwest, that represent the wide range of sizes, styles, and plants that make up herb gardening in the West.

  • Backdoor kitchen garden

    Thomas Gaston of Menlo Park, California, created what might be called the ultimate easy-care, easy-to-pick kitchen herb garden, just two steps from his back door. Gaston learned about herbs from his Swiss mother, an avid herbalist. "All Swiss are herbalists to some degree," he says. "I guess I'm carrying on the tradition." He started with mints; they're invasive, so he contained them in old chimney pipes left over from remodeling. The rest of the herbs were at ground level. But Gaston liked not having to bend over, so he put many of the others in raised containers, too. Mainstays for cooking (all in containers) are thyme, tarragon, spearmint, peppermint, rosemary, oregano, and marjoram. In the ground beneath, he grows basil, caraway-scented thyme, chives, garlic chives, Greek oregano, lemon and lime thyme, lemon verbena ("I dry it and make sachets for the linen closet"), parsley, and sage. Maintenance is simple. Gaston installed a drip-irrigated system with hidden emitter lines that climb the backs of the containers. When plants get woody, he cuts them back to initiate new growth. Basil and parsley are replanted every year.

  • A Shakespearean garden

    After researching herb gardening. Sheryl Lozier of Flinn Springs, east of San Diego, realized that an herb garden, like other kinds of gardens, needs a focal point. She chose a favorite sundial (a bench, bird feeder, or topiary also would work), and designed her garden around it. The garden radiates from the center, Which Lozier says is a colonial design that she finds appropriate for her country garden. A split-rail fence adds to the rustic look. Lozier decided she needed a theme for the plants, too, so she chose plants that Shakespeare wrote about. Many of them are culinary - Greek oregano, lavender, rosemary, sage, tarragon, and thyme (she grows five kinds: camphor thyme, caraway-scented thyme, elfin thyme, mother-of-thyme, and woolly thyme).

    Among the flowering plants are ones she dries and uses in wreaths. Kinds include armeria, catmint, dianthus, larkspur, Queen Anne's lace, salvias, yarrow, and old-fashioned-looking David Austin's English roses. Lozier lets her plants grow unchecked through spring. "I love the wild look - everything gets big and beautiful." Around the Fourth of July, before it gets hot, she cuts back plants for potpourri, collects seed of larkspur and Queen Anne's lace, and harvests herbs. The garden suffers in the summer, but when the heat breaks in fall the plants perk up again. In winter, the garden gets another round of maintenance, and most things get cut back. But the garden isn't entirely bare. Lozier plants pansies for color and often has roses blooming in winter. "The land around us is our inspiration for herb gardening," explains Lozier, referring to the foothills near San Diego in which she lives. "Gardening is a real pleasure with our healthy soil and great weather."

  • A matter of thyme

    When Olive Curtis of Acme, Washington, was a busy home economics teacher, she and her students used dried herbs out of jars. Now that she's retired and has time to grow her own herbs - as well as teach cooking classes - she uses fresh herbs exclusively. One of her favorites is thyme. Six years ago, Curtis told her husband that she needed more room for her new passion, herb hardening. "He told me, 'You can have the lawn,' so I took him up on it," says Curtis. A friend helped her husband take down huge birch and cedar trees. Then the lawn came out. "I like circles and meandering path," she says, "so first I put in a curving brick path. Then I planted a circular thyme garden bordered by rocks and divided into sections with bricks." The garden now contains 100 thyme plants of eight kinds. At the center is woolly thyme; around the outside is creeping thyme. The sections contain English, French, Dutch tea, lemon, orange balsam, and variegated lemon thymes. "I used to have more kinds, but some froze. Now I mulch heavily with bark in winter and, as a security and to fill in the following spring, I take many cuttings, which over-winter indoors." The rest of her garden expanded to include many more herbs and flowering plants. She now has a semicircle of chives, a sage garden, and a cutting garden of culinary herbs. For convenience, she has pots of herbs on her deck that she harvests at the last minute to sprinkle into soups, breads, and sauces.

  • Medicinal garden in Gold Country

    For more than 15 years, Candis Packard has been fascinated by herbs. For the last 11 of them, she has been developing her herb garden in the Sierra foothills in Placerville, California. She bought her three acres not because of the house, which she barely took notice of, but because of the beautiful land and its incredible soil. The topsoil runs 18 to 20 inches deep. Her intent was to cultivate a botanical herb garden.

    "All of the herbs I grow are for my family's use, but they're also part of my demonstration garden," explains Packard. "I teach herbalogy and prefer that the students develop a relationship with living plants instead of just dried materials." The main herb garden was designed to reflect a Native American medicine wheel, with the paths following the cardinal points. The herbs come from around the world. They're not arranged in any particular order, but since it gets very hot in the Sierra foothills, Packard planted them according to their needs for sun, shade, and moisture. Most of the herbs are medicinal. But Packard also has planted some flowers strictly for show. At the wheel's center are calendula, garden sage, and pennyroyal. Petunias and sweet alyssum add long-lasting color. In surrounding beds, Packard grows five kinds of echinacea, used for colds and to aid the immune system, and low hedges of chrysanthemum, whose flowers are used to reduce fevers and inflammations. Beneath large oak trees, Packard planted shade-loving herbs such as angelica, Chinese foxglove (Glutinosa), skullcap (Scutellaria laterifolia), and wood betony (Stachys officinalis). She also grows rare herbs from China and India, including astragalus (Mongolicus), dong quai (Angelica sinensis), fo-ti (Polygonum multiflorum), which climbs on a tripod, and ashwaghanda (Withania somnifera). An unusual herb in her garden grew in almost every European garden in the 1500s. It's called costmary (Chrysanthemum balsamita) or bible-leaf plant because its 4- to 5-inch-long leaves made good bookmarks. It's used to reduce fevers and aid digestion, and has a sweet minty taste. To keep the beds healthy and to reduce water use in her hot climate, Packard adds composted manure, compost, and worm casings. Then she fertilizes with fish emulsion and kelp during the growing season. Since Sierra soils are low in phosphorus, she also adds organic phosphate. The entire garden is on an irrigation system - sprinklers for the lawn and soaker hoses, sprayers, and emitters for the rest of the plants.

  • A Victorian herb garden with a casual flair

    Peter and Carol Ann Irsfeld of Cambria, California, wanted their herb garden to be both useful and decorative, since it would be in front of their Victorian home, a bed-and-breakfast called the Ollalieberry Inn. They chose a formal design to suit the house's era, with paths radiating from a circle accented by an old birdbath. But that's where the formality ends. "We didn't want anything with too much structure," explains Peter. "The garden has a cottagey feel." The plants in the free-form beds are a mixture of culinary, fragrant, and flowering herbs. "Ninety percent of the plants are herbs, but we use only 40 to 50 percent of them," says Peter. Favorites for cooking are chives, French thyme, golden marjoram, oregano, rosemary, savory, and society garlic (Tulbaghia violacea). "We enjoy going out and picking herbs to make meals for the guests. One of the favorite evening hors d'oeuvres is goat cheese and roasted garlic with fresh herbs."

    They planted other old-world herbs such as catmint, comfrey, lamb's ears, and lemon verbena. For fragrance and color, they added herbs such as feverfew, lavender, and rosemary. Long-blooming perennials such as Santa Barbara daisy and penstemon provide points of interest. More pungent herbs like rosemary and lavender are used freely inside the inn. "We like to use them around the house instead of traditional flowers," says Peter. "People enter and often ask us what the wonderful smell is." Maintenance is straightforward. Cooking herbs are constantly being nipped at, which keeps them in bounds. The garden also gets several prunings through the year - one major pruning in winter, when most things get whacked back (the Irsfelds add winter vegetables to fill in bare spots), and two or three less severe trims in late spring and summer to control growth.

Walking for Fat Loss

With obesity and disease increasing dramatically, many fitness experts are recommending walking for weight loss and fitness. Some are even going so far as saying that walking is the best way to burn fat and lose weight. I strongly disagree with this and am going to show you why walking is NOT effective at burning off body fat.

Yes, you read that correctly...

Walking is NOT effective at burning body fat and if your goal is fat loss you might be wasting your time. I am not saying that walking is not beneficial, I am saying that if fat loss is the primary goal, there are far better choices that will deliver far better results.

The primary benefits of walking are increased blood flow and circulation, improved recovery, and a strengthened immune system. There are several reasons why walking in not the best choice when it comes to fat loss. Here are just a few:

1. Walking does NOT burn a lot of calories

The lower the intensity of the activity or exercise the smaller the number of calories burned per unit of time. For example, you can burn more calories in 15 minutes of bicycling at a high intensity level than you can in 45 minutes of easy walking.

2. Walking does NOT result in a large increase in metabolism

Another downside to walking is that because it's generally low intensity it results in only a small increase in metabolism that will only last approximately 1-2 hours after the walk. On the other hand, metabolism increases are larger and last longer (4-24 hrs or more) when you perform high intensity cardio workouts.

3. Walking does NOT deplete muscle glycogen

Low intensity exercise like walking does not deplete muscle glycogen levels and therefore, later that day if you have excess calories they will likely be stored as body fat whereas if you deplete the glycogen the excess calories will primarily be stored in the muscles.

So why then do so many fitness and health experts recommend walking for weight loss? One reason is that people don't want to hear that they have to work hard so they figure some activity is better than none. Another reason is that the body burns more fat for fuel when exercising at an easy pace, however, the total amount of energy used is so small that you end up burning off little body fat. That's also why when you choose the fat burning program on your treadmill or bike it has you exercise at any easy level. Yes, you're burning fat, but so little that you'd have to exercise at that easy pace for hours and hours each day.

High intensity cardiovascular/aerobic exercise is much more effective in burning off the excess body fat. In fact, several studies have been done to prove this. In one study they compared one group who did moderate level aerobics for 45 minutes with another group who performed high intensity workouts for 15 minutes. They did before and after fitness testing including body fat analysis and found that the group who performed the high intensity aerobics lost nine times as much body fat!

Want more proof?

Compare the bodies of a walker, marathon runner, and sprinter. If you are not familiar with what a sprinters body looks like, it is very muscular and has little body fat while on the other hand the body of a walker will likely have the opposite, little muscle and more fat. The sprinter does little or no low intensity exercise and does primarily short hard bursts of work while the marathoner overtrains so much they burn off both the body fat and the muscle and that's why they tend to look almost sickly thin.

So what should you do then if your main objective is to shed those excess pounds of body fat?

Two things:

1. Perform some form of high intensity cardio 2-4 times per week

2. Stabilize blood sugar to minimize the storage of new fat

I know some of you by now are saying I can't do high intensity exercise, I have a bad knee and don't worry, I have a solution for you. The good news is that high intensity is all relative to you and your current fitness level. For example, fast walking up and down hills may be high intensity for you... it all depends. So don't think that you have to start running or something like that. Just slowly start to increase the intensity of your cardio workouts while also maybe decreasing the time because you can either work hard or you can work long.

Also, you can make almost any activity or exercise high intensity.... here are a few examples:
· increase your speed
· use an incline or hills
· increase resistance
· perform intervals ( the most effective method)

Obviously, some exercises/activities or better suited than others but the point is if you want to burn more fat and make your workouts as productive as possible you need to increase the intensity.

As with any changes to your fitness program be careful and don't over do it. Just because high intensity workouts burn more fat, don't think that you'll get even better results by doing it everyday - that will quickly lead to over-training and a loss of muscle which will only make it even harder to burn off the fat.

So if your primary goal is fat loss, don't waste your time walking and instead focus on progressive, high intensity cardio to maximize the effectiveness of your workouts.
