Hey There, Welcome to everyone who has taken the time to come out here and open this newsletter. I have attemped to pack another issue with information to help you online as well as at home. A balanced life at home always makes your work life easier. For those who doubt that or are in the middle of a "tiff", set the current attitude aside and remember how you felt when you just got home and changed from your work attire to your favorite knock abouts. Well? What about it? For the hardliners, think about this --- there are those who have made bad choices and do not have a home anymore or are incarcerated. I hope everyone is having a good week, I know I am. Last week was a struggle. Two weeks ago we lost our dog, Fluffy, she was 13 years old. Arthritis had begun to take its' toll on her small body and we were going to have to make a decision soon. I have included an article in the Pet Corner that covers the aging process for dogs and cats. You may want to read it and compare it to your four legged family member. If you are a new member and have not sent in your ad, please do so. OK, on the the meat of this issue! May God Bless you and all of your family. Sincerely, Janet Bullard |

Networking Your Way To The Top (c) 2003 by Detlev Reimer Are you an achiever? And how did you become successful? On your own ? Probably not.... You should keep it online like the Three Musketeers who said "All For One" and "One for All". It's not easy to achieve everything on your own. Although, I don't want to say that it is impossible. What I want to express is that it can be a lot easier to build your business by working together with other entrepreneurs in your field. Even your competitors can become your partners, let me tell you why... Me, a partner ? You should consider to partner with someone when : a.) He/She has valuable contacts you don't have. b.) He/She has new products you can sell to your list. c.) You want to grow your business faster. d.) Your own list is saturated with your products. e.) You don't have any real friends online, just clients and subscribers... Many online friendships have become the basis for thriving businesses and are responsible for enormous growth, especially when two powerful achievers join their forces (see Frank Garon and Terry Dean/Lee Benson as an example). Ad swaps One of the easiest ways to start a profitable partnership can be by using ad swaps to grow each others' mailing lists. If the ad is interesting enough or even recommended by both parties,it can be a source of growth but of course, the exposure has to be equal. So if your ezine has 2000 subscribers and your partner's has 7000, you should suggest running the ad three or four times more often in your ezine to compensate him for the lower number. An ad swap is not simply restricted to exchanging a classified ad. You can swap whatever ad you like whether it is a Top Sponsor Ad or a Solo. Or another strategy includes exchanging recommendations on the thank you page for your own subscribers. In other words, if someone has subscribed to your ezine then he can automatically be forwarded to a page that offers him your partner's ezine as well. If you put your recommendation next to it, it might increase the number of subscribers to your partner's ezine significantly. And if he does the same for you, it can bring you hordes of new subscribers. Reciprocal links Another great way to partner with someone is by exchanging links. Personally, I've gotten a lot of great personal contacts just by asking someone for a link exchange. And as exchanging links should always be a part of your website promotion strategy, you profit in two ways: By getting new friends and contacts and by winning valuable link partners. This is a strategy you cannot miss, especially if you want to have success in the search engines as your position will be dependent on the number of quality links pointing to your site. This is called link popularity. Want to check how many links lead to your site ? Then you can use a free tool called Link Popularity Checker. You just have to put in your URL and press a button and it will tell you the number of links on the different search engines: http://ct.par32.com/?id=92BB03AG492EF1 Affiliates The best way to make lots of sales is by creating your own affiliate program. You can give your affiliates a very large share of the profits and they will gladly promote your product for you. That's called leverage and is something you must put into place. The disadvantage, though, is that in most cases only a very small percentage really is making sales so you'll have to spend some time educating them about the best possibilities to promote your products. Consequently, you'll have to look for affiliates which will be working hard to make not only 1 sale per month but rather for the ones making 10 sales a week. You want to find the super affiliates! These are the ones with large email lists and popular websites. You can locate the owners of large ezines in the various ezine directories. An extensive list can be found on my website at http://ct.par32.com/?id=92BB03AG492EF0 . For finding the most successful website owners you should get Neil Shearing's Internet Success Spider as this tool not only gives you the rankings in the search engines for your best keywords but moreover shows you even their Alexa stats so you know how much traffic the site gets. It's one of the essential tools you should purchase if you have your own product(s) and need affiliates! Joint Ventures Even better are joint ventures and usually can bring you even more sales if you approach the hard working and already successful Internet marketers - the "gurus" and the ones following their paths. To make them work together with you, you'll have to make them a better offer than your standard offer. Approaching a highly successful Internet marketer means to play by his rules, he's the one with the big list or the website that gets thousands of visitors a day. You should give the main share to your partner. The number of sales which can result from this, will outweigh the smaller profit per sale. For the ultra successful marketers a 75% offer would be a good approach (Just like Joe Kumar has done with his ebook 30 days to Internet marketing success...). By having a lot of exposure in a high quality newsletter, you'll get more affiliates for your product than you could imagine.... As a conclusion, my tip is: Approach as many other marketers in your field per day as you can. You never know when you get a new friend, a new super affiliate or someone who can open you the guru's door...! --- AffiliateTurbo: Submit your Affiliate Program to 43 Affiliate Directories in 1 Hour! Hacker Prevention Techniques By Aaron Turpen Aaronz WebWorkz I remember when the term “hacker” referred to a computer geek who could transform a mundane electronic device, with a few modifications, into something completely different from what the manufacturer and designer had envisioned for it. In some cases, these were cool improvements and more than one of these hackers made a fortune selling the rights to them. In other cases, the transformation just made you wonder if the guy's horn-rimmed glasses were a little too tight. Nowadays, the term “hacker” is used to denote a nefarious individual who, for one reason or another, causes havoc or harm to computer systems. The old “hacker ethic” - sort of a code of honor, like the Samurai Bushido code for computer geeks – is apparently no more. The new “hackers” of the old school are now “open source” participants (“coder” is a popular term for them). A “hacker” is now someone who breaks into systems, proliferates viruses, sneaks in via a trojan horse, or otherwise causes problems with other's computing. The Spread of Attack Currently, the variations of the Klez virus are reported to be the most prolific online spread of malicious code. Luckily, all it really does is find your Outlook address book and perpetuate itself with your contact list. The news media is always quick to pick up on the latest “hacker attack” or “computer virus infiltration” and make sure it's a top story for the day. With all of these perceived and realized attacks, how do you, Mr. and Mrs. Internet User, keep yourself and your data safe? Most of us are aware of the need for “firewalls,” “anti-virus software,” and such. Hopefully, most of us are using these tools to protect ourselves. Beyond that, however, there is more you need to know. First, we'll cover what the attacks are. Know Thy Enemy There are five major forms of attack commonly used against personal computers and networks. Some are more common in attacking one while others are for the other.
Gearing Up For Battle Now that you know what you're up against, you should understand what it is that you'll need to combat the beasts. Most of the items you need are probably included on your computer already – many are free to download as well! The recommendations I'm making are my personal preference. There are other versions of these same types of software (some of which I'll mention) and no one can really tell you which is better for you. Most of the software mentioned is available for both PC and Mac. Anti-Virus Software I prefer Norton Anti-Virus (I use it as a part of Norton Systemworks) for virus protection. I find it easy to use, easy to buy, and well-made. The updates are frequent and do not take long to download (they average 100-300 kilobytes per download, with releases about once a week). Another anti-virus software with a solid reputation is McAffee. Most new computers come with one or the other pre-installed. You can buy either from Amazon.com or at your local software store. Firewalls A firewall is the term used for software (or hardware) that functions like a firewall in building construction: it completely blocks the path of a fire – delaying or halting its progress. Firewalls on a computer block network traffic coming to and leaving a system, giving permission to transmit and receive only to those pieces of software authorized by the user. My favorite firewall software is ZoneAlarm. Available for free for individual users and at a nominal fee for professionals and businesses, this simple-to-use software takes care of everything most users will need. It alerts you when unauthorized software is attempting to send or receive (thereby letting you authorize it or find the culprit) and the Zone Alarm site has a large database of known software so that if you aren't sure what's trying to access, you can click on the warning box and a web page will open with an explanation of what that software is (if it's in their database). I'm not aware of any comparable software firewalls available. There are a lot of hardware options, though, especially if you connect via broadband. Most cable and DSL modems are now equipped with built-in firewalls for protection. You The User By far the best tool for defense against attack of any kind is you and what you know. If you know what you're up against and ways of combating it, you are less likely to be a victim. The uninformed user is more likely to stumble into or unwittingly be the progenitor of an attack. If you are in the know, keep your software updated, regularly update your virus definitions, read informed articles such as this one (*wink*), and watch for sudden changes in your computer's activity – you'll be better able to defend against attack. We will probably never be able to keep all attackers and attacks from causing harm. But at least we can minimize their effects or reach. As J. Edgar Hoover once said, “for every thousand honest men, there's one hoodlum trying to steal from them.” |
An Easy way to Deal with Email Viruses and WormsBy Virtuassist Heather Dickson | Date Submitted: 10/01/03
Summary: A step by step guide to setting rules in Outlook to deal with email worms and viruses. If you feel intimidated when someone tries to teach you something new on the computer, this article is for you! In the course of my career, I’ve worked with many people who I knew were smart but were convinced that they couldn’t learn how to do new things on a computer. At some point, they’d convinced themselves that they weren’t one of those “computer people”. I would try to teach them how to do something that would make their work a lot easier or faster, and I could see them shut down immediately. “I can’t do stuff like that. I’m just not good at it.” In a few cases, my colleagues were simply amazed that I knew how to do things like upload photos to the Internet or how to start a new folder in Windows. Some would tell me that I must have some special gift for technology. I would just laugh and tell them that nothing could be further from the truth! I have a degree in psychology. I’m not a math and science type of person, and if it weren’t for the patience of my tech-minded husband and friends, I never would have learned how to do these things. The fact is, computers are such a part of our lives, that you can’t afford to think of yourself as not a “computer person”. The reason I think that a lot of people are intimidated when learning about computers is that so much of the instructions and directions are full of jargon and assume that people have as much technological knowledge as people who work with computers for a living. I’m convinced that if I can do it, anyone else can do it too. All it takes is an open mind, confidence, and someone to explain things to you step by step in plain English. Aside from using anti-virus software, there is another way to keep some email viruses or worms from driving you crazy and clogging up your inbox. While the "Sobig" virus seems to have died down, there are sure to be some like it in the future. If you would like to prevent these bogus Emails from reaching your inbox, you can set up rules in Outlook or Outlook Express to send them directly to the delete folder. Although the Sobig virus seems to be under control, it might be good practice to do this now. That way when the next big virus comes around, you'll be able to filter it out right away. It might seem like its difficult, but I know that anyone can do this. If you're smart enough to do your taxes and balance your checkbook, you can do this, trust me. If you're using Outlook Express, go to Tools, then select "message rules" and then "mail". A box will pop up with buttons on the right side of the window. Hit the "new" button. Another box pops up with three windows. In the first box, click the box next to "Where the subject line contains specific words". In the second box, click "delete it". Now in the third box it should say, "Apply this rule after the message arrives/Where the Subject line contains specific words/Delete it." Click on the words "contains specific words". This is where you tell the program what words to look for in the subject line. It’s very important to remember that this is case sensitive, meaning that if you put "abc" in, it will only delete emails with "abc" in the subject, and not "ABC" or "Abc". For the Sobig virus, there were seven subject lines that were commonly used. If you would like to read more about this, go to http://www.webpro.com/iq/SobigF.asp The subject lines are: That movie Wicked screensaver Your application Approved My details Details Your details Thank you It’s a good idea to copy and paste the phrases above to make sure the capitalization is exactly the same. (copy=control C, Paste=Control V) Enter the first phrase into the box and then click on the "add" button to the right. That phrase will appear in the box below. You can add as many phrases as you'd like, clicking "add" after each one. When you're done, hit "ok" Then hit "ok" again. At this point, we are back to one box open with buttons on the right. Be sure to click the "apply now" button if you want the rule to apply to the email that is already in your inbox as well as any future emails. When you are done with that, click the "ok" button and you're finished. If you use Outlook, the process is a little different. First go to Tools, and then choose "Rules Wizard". Click on the "new" button on the right. It should say at the top of a new box "What type of rule would you like to create?" There will be a list of types of rules: you want to choose "Check messages when they arrive", which is at the top so it should already be highlighted. Simply click on "next". The next box asks you "which conditions do you want to check?" with a list of choices, each with an empty box next to it. Scroll down until you get to "with specific words in the subject", and click the box in front of it. Once you click it, you'll notice that "with specific words in the subject" appears in the box below. Click on the "specific words" in the lower box here to specify which words the program should look for. If you would like to read more about this, go to http://www.webpro.com/iq/SobigF.asp The subject lines are: That movie Wicked screensaver Your application Approved My details Details Your details Thank you A new box will pop up that says, "search text" at the top. Enter one of the phrases you want to filter out and click "add". You may enter as many phrases as you'd like, clicking "add" after each one. When you're finished, click "Ok". You'll be taken back to the previous box. Click "next" at the bottom. At this point, you have two choices. You can either specify that these emails go into your delete file to be reviewed later, or you can specify that they be permanently deleted from Outlook so that you never see them. At this point, either click in the box next to "delete it", which simply moves it automatically to the delete folder, or click "permanently delete", which means that you will never see the email at all and won't be able to get it back. Click "next" again and you're now at the exceptions box. I can see no reason to use the exceptions when dealing with the Sobig viruses and others like it. There might be a temptation to make an exception for people who are in your address book or close friends. But remember, a virus will take over someone else's address book and send you emails without the person ever knowing. Anyone in your address book could send you an infected email without knowing it. I recommend that you hit “next” without selecting any exceptions at this point. In the next box, the program would like to know the name of the rule you've just created. You might want to call it "viruses #1" or something similar. Click finish after naming your rule. At this point you have another choice: you can apply the rule you just created to the mail already in your inbox, or you can choose to have it apply only to the incoming mail from now on. Choose either "run now" or "ok". You're finished. That wasn't SO hard, was it? You might even want to set up some more rules to help you organize your inbox or to filter out spam or unwanted email.

Making Scented Greeting Cards By Jill Black http://www.netwrite-publish.com One of my hobbies is turning photographs of flowers and garden plants into scented greeting cards and notelets. Start by taking several pictures of the flowers you want to feature on the front of your cards. This way you can pick the ones with the sharpest images to use. The best time to take photos is early morning while the dew is still on the flowers and early evening when the colours of the flowers tends to be more vivid. Take your photographs against a dark background if possible. This brings out the image of the flower. A light background can appear lack lusture and faded. You can use Microsoft Publisher to create your card using the greeting card wizard and simply scan your photo in. Another way is to simply cut four small silts into the card paper and slip the four corners of the photo print into these slits. This way people can take the photo out if they wish to keep them. Use a good quality glossy card paper to print out your finished card. To scent the cards use a Pure Essential oil to match the fragrance of the flower or plant featured on the card. For example: Rose essential oil for your rose photos Lavender for lavender photos Lemon for photographs of lemons or lemon trees and so on... To scent your greeting cards, simply place 2 drops of the appropriate essential oil (or blend of oils) onto a piece of blotting paper or cotton wool balls, then place in a ziplock plastic bag with the card that you want to fragrance. Seal and leave for 48 hours. When you remove the card it will be delicately fragranced. You can also turn the same images into a range of bookmarks, writing paper, invitations, place cards etc When finished, you can give your cards away as gifts to family and friends or to start a part-time scented greeting card business. In New Zealand these cards sell on average for $10.00 for a pack of five plus $2.00 postage and packaging however, you may need to check out the current selling price in other countries and price accordingly. To sell your cards advertise in gardening magazines or approach your local garden centre and ask if they willl sell them on your behalf. ---------------- Copyright (c) 2003 J Black. How to Write a Children’s Book in 30 Days or Less! By Caterina Christakos How To Write A Children's Book The first time I attempted to write a children's book it took me three months and several years of promising myself I would do it "one day." In that time I managed to wash the dog a million times, rearrange my closet, get my apartment so clean that they should have done a commercial about it and procrastinate in ways that gave the word a new name. When I actually sat down to write the book it took me two days and that was with editing. That is the longest that it has taken me to write a children's book since then and in reality, unless you are writing an epic it will not take you more than that period of time to write yours either, after you read this article. Why then the title, " How to Write a Children's book in 30 days or less?" So that you will have time to wash the dog, clean the closets and get Mr. Clean to personally come in and interview you, in addition to writing a children’s book that you will treasure forever. The Six Keys to Getting Past Procrastination -Visualize- Visualize your goal. Visualize your Story. Visualize your life the way you want it to be. If you follow these six steps diligently, you should have more than enough time to write your book, give Fido his bath and make sure that your summer clothes are at the front of your closet. Good luck and have fun. Caterina Christakos is the author of several children's books and how to books. She has also traveled all over the country writing for national and international travel magazines. It is her belief that, with faith and perserverance, anything is possible. Title: Personal Finance 101 Part 2 of 4 Author: David Berky The subject of personal finance is very broad, but as a beginning, I would like to discuss what I consider the foundations of personal finance: Security, Stability, Growth and Protection & Management. Stability The next level of personal finance is stability. Stability to me means that first of all I live within my means. I don't spend more than I earn. Otherwise I am spending my savings, investments, emergency money, or getting into debt. I have a lot of debt, but most of it is real estate which is producing some income. I try to avoid credit card debt and purchase everything with money I already have. I don't buy things expecting that next month I will have more money or I will get a big raise or promotion. You can't sell me a car based on a monthly payment amount; I want to know the final price! In order to make sure that I am living within my means, I created a simple budget and I track my expenses using Simple Joe's Expense Tracker. I can tell how much I have spent in each budget category and I know when to keep a closer eye on certain types of expenses, or when and where I can cut expenses and what I can live without in order to stay within my budget. Counting pennies is pretty tedious, but tracking where the dollars go can be eye-opening. Another aspect of stability is avoiding or eliminating debt. Debt in itself is a form of stability; you always have to make those payments until it is all paid off. Some recent reports show that the average American is $7,000 - $20,000 in debt. Most of it is consumer debt: credit cards, store accounts, rent-to-own, auto loans, etc. And those types of consumer debt usually charge a higher interest rate than any savings account, CD, or money market account; even more than most high-flying risky investments. This means that $1,000 in debt at 18% is costing you 9 times what your $1,000 savings account at 2% is producing. Consumer debt is a dangerous spiral that is very hard to get out of. The first problem is, as mentioned before, living within your means. Don't get further into debt to support an extravagant lifestyle. Or even if you are frugal, if you are using credit cards and debt to finance your purchases, you either need to stop purchasing luxury items or find a way to increase your income to support these purchases/payments. You may even have to lower your standard-of-living because you have racked up considerable debt and need to free up some money to pay it down. But don't wait to start. Those minimum payments are often designed to keep you paying 18% interest for 40 years! That's longer than most home loans. You could even end up paying more than 10 times the original cost of the item just in interest payments. Is that new stereo really worth that much? To help people get themselves out of debt we created the "Pay Off My Debts" tool in Simple Joe's Money Tools. It is also available as a stand-alone product called Simple Joe's Debt Eraser. These tools help you create a Rapid Debt Reduction Plan which shows you how much to pay on each debt each month in order to save as much on interest charges as possible and pay off your debts as soon as possible. These tools can help you systematically eliminate your debts whether you owe $1,000 or $100,000. The key is to start living below your means and start focusing on paying off your debt. It doesn't make much sense to be worried about whether or not your 401k earns 8 or 9% this year, if you are paying 21% on your credit card debt. A third aspect that starts in the stability category and transcends to the next personal finance level, growth, is the concept of investing in yourself. By this I mean spending time to educate yourself in personal finance matters, as you are doing right now and spending time gaining more knowledge and improving your skills or even developing new ones. As an employee, this can have a direct relation to who gets laid off during the next round of cutbacks. If you have some skills or have demonstrated some abilities that are not possessed by your co-workers and these skills make you a more valuable employee, you are less likely to get the pink-slip. Also while you are making yourself more valuable to your current employer, you are also making yourself worth more to future employers. It is much easier to land a job if you have some special skills that are in high demand or even if you bring some special knowledge or experience that you fellow job-seekers may have overlooked or failed to invest in. Being in the computer industry, I have to spend hours each week reading trade magazines, exploring web sites, and reading emailed newsletters to keep abreast of what is new in my field. If I stopped learning just five years ago, I would have missed out on the Internet revolution, email, web sites and the majority of the income I now enjoy. Keeping myself informed and up to date takes time and resources, but it helps me protect my current income and expand my skills to help me earn income in other areas. This increases my stability by allowing me to not have to rely on one client, employer or source of income. A chair with four legs will always be more stable than a stool with only three. ************************************************************ © Simple Joe, Inc. The Animal Rescue Site is having
trouble getting enough people to click on their link daily
to meet their quota to getting free food donated every day to abused
and neglected animals. It takes less than a minute to go to their
site and click on "feed an animal in need" for free. This doesn't
cost you a thing. Their corporate sponsors/advertisers use the number
of daily visits to donate food to abandoned/neglected animals in
exchange for advertising.
Here's the web site! Pass it along to people you know. http://www.theanimalrescuesite.com The Aging Dog And Cat These days, the average life span of all dog breeds is 13 years(see age analogy chart), and cats have been known to live well into their twenties. But some dogs age faster than other. Giant breeds, like bullmastiffs and great Danes, usually show signs of aging before their eighth birthday. Cats and small breeds like Chihuahuas, on the other hand, can often remain youthfully vigorous until they’re 12 or older. The pace of aging also depends on individual genetic differences within a breed and the quality of care pets receive from their human guardians. If you pet has spunky old relatives and has received excellent health care since it was a puppy or kitten, it stands a good chance of longevity. Still, growing old is a natural (and inevitable) process that we all must face. And as your pet ages, a number of physical and behavioral changes occur. With age, your pet's muzzle may turn white, and the faithful companion that once followed you everywhere may nap away the day. Your pet's vision may become fuzzier as cataracts develop, and its hearing often fades as the nerves and small bones inside the ears degenerate. As vision and hearing diminish, your pet may startle more easily when approached. Dental disease(see dental care) is probably the most universal health problem of older pets. It begins with deposits of plaque which harden to form tartar. If untreated, tartar buildup can lead to gum disease and tooth loss. And bacterial infections from diseased gums can spread to the kidneys and possibly other organs. So be sure to brush or treat your elderly companion’s teeth daily and take your pet in for regular dental checkups. Cats are also very prone to painfull cavities. Fortunately, older animals rarely develop hardening of the arteries.(see cardiac disease) But some older pet's do develop heart murmurs caused by the failure of heart valves to close properly. Older dogs and cats may also develop dilated or hypertrophic cardiomyopathy - a condition in which the heart muscle enlarges and contracts weakly. Either condition can lead to congestive heart failure (CHF), which owners may first observe as coughing and shortness of breath. While medical treatment can help ease the lives of dogs with CHF, there is no known cure. We are also now diagnosing and treating disease such as hypertension, glaucoma, inflammatory bowel disease, chronic liver disease, and cushings disease just to name a few. Dogs and cats may also develop nerve disorders as they age. Repeated episodes of stumbling, for example, may indicate myelopathy - a dysfunction of the spinal cord and its associated nerves. Cats and dogs may develope arthritis on the spine. Nerve disorders can also arise when tumors or ruptured vertebral disks impinge on nerves. Some older dogs may lose their balance or tilt their heads due to a nerve malfunction within the vestibular apparatus (the balance mechanism) of the inner ear. Dogs with this condition tend to improve on their own over several weeks (though head tilting may persist). (Be sure to inform your veterinarian of any changes in your dog’s normal posture or balance.) Tumors are more common in the older rather than in younger pet. But not all tumors are life-threatening. Many older animals develop benign skin tumors, which veterinarians can easily remove. But even when has a more serious tumor developes - such as a brain tumor - surgical advances have given many dogs the opportunity to make remarkable comebacks. As with all medical conditions, however, early detection and treatment of tumors offers the best hope for a favorable outcome. (Always have your veterinarian check any lumps you discover while grooming or petting your pet.) Even the most prim and proper pet may start urinating in the house as it ages. An older pet's kidneys (see kidney disease) may lose their ability to concentrate urine, forcing it to drink and urinate more frequently to rid the body of waste products. But a number of other diseases, such as diabetes, can cause increased thirst and urination. Inappropriate elimination can also stem from a cognitive problem. Your pet simply may not realize what it’s doing. So don’t automatically assume that "old age" is what’s causing your loved one to drink and urinate more than usual. Instead, check with your veterinarian. Aging also brings behavioral changes.(see cognitive dysfunction ) Older dogs may not respond as quickly to commands as the once did. Obedient dogs will still be obedient, of course, but they may not "snap to" as they did in their younger days. This slowdown may be due to the pain and stiffness of arthritis. Another possible explanation for slower responses is the general slowdown of information processing in the brain. (Over time, brain mass shrinks, and the once-dependable nerve cells begin to misfire.) Some behaviorists believe separation anxiety in older dogs may be triggered by aging-related medical problems. When a dog experiences internal discomfort, it might become more clingy. e. This theory suggests that if a veterinarian can successfully treat the underlying medical problem or problems, the anxiety will recede. Your alertness and responsiveness to your pet's behavior and physical condition can make a big difference in the comfort quotient" of your dog’s golden years. One cardinal rule: don’t automatically attribute signs of illness to getting old. Sometimes, what we assume are normal age-related infirmities are actually treatable conditions. For example, people often chalk up to old age a pet's reluctance to run or walk as far or as briskly as it used to, when the fact the slowdown may be due to a heart condition or arthritis - both of which can be managed with treatment. Taking your aging pet to the veterinarian for regular checkups will often bring treatable age- related ailments to light. Mention any noticeable change in your pet to your veterinarian. For example, weight loss may signal an underlying medical problem such as heart or periodontal disease, and weight gain may indicate something has gone awry with your dog’s endocrine system. Your veterinarian may order diagnostic tests to pin down a diagnosis. Blood work and urinalysis can reveal abnormalities in the kidneys, liver, and other organs. And many veterinarians recommend routine annual blood tests for all geriatric animals.. X-rays can reveal arthritic joints, and ultrasound can show some forms of heart disease (including valve malfunctions). More specialized imaging techniques can uncover vertebral disk problems and tumors of the spinal cord or brain. Scientific research on the nutritional requirements of older pet's is scant. But you may find your elder canine eats less and still puts on extra pounds due to a slower rate of metabolism. Excess weight can aggravate many canine medical conditions, including heart, respiratory, skin and joint problems. Even five extra pounds on a 30 pound dog or 3-4 pounds on a cat can be detrimental. To help your portly pet reduce, feed it smaller quantities of food or gradually switch to a diet that packs fewer calories per bowl. Rather than battling the bulge, some older pet's have just the opposite problem: they struggle to keep weight on as they age. Check your dog’s weight regularly. When you do, you should be able to feel but not see the ribs. (Be sure to report any weight changes to your veterinarian. From the standpoint of nutrition, your older animal is very much an individual. If your white-whiskered friend is healthy, slim, and eating a good-quality commercial diet for adult pet's, you certainly don’t need to change its menu or add vitamin and mineral supplements. As an adjunct to good nutrition, consider exercise and encourage moderate activity. If your dog’s health permits, walking is great exercise. Just be sure to start any exercise program gradually. For water-loving dogs, swimming is good aerobic exercise. Swimming is especially good for dogs with arthritis because there is no jarring impact. Even a game of fetch helps maintain blood circulation and muscle tone. (It also brings you and your old friend closer together!) Sadly, the time may come when you have to make the difficult decision about letting your beloved pet go. Your final act of kindness may be to ease the pain of your long-time friend. But until you need to contemplate such a profound decision, give your senior citizen a little extra care, understanding, and attention. Savor your the golden years. May they be many and memorable. Exercises For the Computer Junkie!
Sally Bunston http://www.auntsallysquilts.com Freeze! Hold that position! Now, take a good look at how you are sitting. How long have you been at the computer this session? Two hours? Three? I'll bet you've been there all day! Look at your "mouse hand". Is it numb? Lift your hand off the mouse....it's cramped into a claw isn't it. I'll bet you're not sitting up straight either, are you? You are leaning forward, shoulders hunched, eyes bugging out of your head. Heck, you've been sitting in front of that monitor for so long your butt thinks it's part of the chair! If you go on like this you will develop some very serious muscle problems. Okay, you may move now....if you can! To the average person it only seems natural to be a little stiff and achy after a computer session. That's how this insidious problem gets started! I can't handle it for more than 45 minutes at a time due to a problem known as Chronic C-Spine strain. What the heck is that? Well, C-Spine refers to the vertebrae in your neck. The strain part comes into play after doing the same thing over and over. The muscles in your neck tighten up and pull against the vertebrae. I got it from lifting doors all day in a factory. The job is long gone, but the strain is with me for life! My neck muscles feel like steel cables, causing headaches, vision problems, dizziness (yes I was somewhat dizzy before, but not like this!), it can even make me sick to my stomach. And, no you don't have to do heavy work to develop this problem. ANYTHING repetitive can cause it! Have I got your attention? Good, let's do something about this now. We need to force every one of those muscles to work in the opposite direction they have been. Let's start with your hands. Make a fist, then stretch your fingers out straight and hold that. If your fingers tingle, you've definitely been at it for too long. Open and close your hands several times, holding for 5 seconds. It will help restore circulation and give those tiny finger muscles a chance to loosen up. Now, sit up straight and lace your fingers together above your head. Pretty easy, huh? Turn your hands over, palms toward the ceiling. Really stretch toward the ceiling. Hold for 5 seconds, relax and repeat 5 times. If this doesn't pull muscles all the way to your shoulder blades, then we've caught your bad habits in time. While you've got your fingers laced together, put your hands behind your head and force your elbows back as far as possible, hold for 5 seconds, and relax. Repeat 5 times. Excellent! Now roll your head around in circles; big, wide circles. (I have to let my dog outside when I do this one, she thinks I've finally lost it!) One more for your neck and we'll move on. Put your left hand on top of your head so that your fingers are almost touching your right ear. Pull your head to the left while stretching your right hand towards the floor. You got it! Hold for 5 seconds, relax and repeat 5 times. Now do this same thing using your right hand. You're getting good at this! Let's get some circulation back in your face next. Using both hands, massage your entire face. Don't forget your temples or those "frown lines" in your forehead. Take a few deep breaths...in through the nose and out through the mouth. Oh my, oxygen! You never realized how shallowly you breathe while parked here, did you? Okay, let's stand up. Tighten your butt muscles, your thighs, your calves, even your toes. Hold and release...yes, 5 times. Did the results surprise you? They shouldn't. You were never intended to sit for hours at a time. Ready? Stand on your "tippy toes". Now, walk to the furthest room from where your computer is...on your toes! Oh, those muscles are breathing a sigh of relief. Blood, oxygen, motion! All done! That wasn't so difficult now, was it? The benefits of doing these simple exercises far outweigh the few minutes that you didn't get to stare at your monitor. In fact, you'll be refreshed and better able to continue your work. You don't need to set aside a specific time for this. Do just one set of stretches each time you are waiting for a website to load or when you're stuck on the perfect word for an ad. And you don't have to stop at just these few exercises, if a certain motion strains a muscle, repeat that motion! Every body is different, the only true constant is that all bodies were intended to move. So, keep moving; and don't forget to breathe! *************** Sally Bunston designs custom quilts and provides machine quilting.
