King James Version

Genesis 15.

The Book of Genesis

Return to Index

Chapter 16

1

Now Sarai Abram's wife bare him no children: and she had an handmaid, an Egyptian, whose name was Hagar.

2

And Sarai said unto Abram, Behold now, the LORD hath restrained me from bearing: I pray thee, go in unto my maid; it may be that I may obtain children by her. And Abram hearkened to the voice of Sarai.

3

And Sarai Abram's wife took Hagar her maid the Egyptian, after Abram had dwelt ten years in the land of Canaan, and gave her to her husband Abram to be his wife.

4

And he went in unto Hagar, and she conceived: and when she saw that she had conceived, her mistress was despised in her eyes.

5

And Sarai said unto Abram, My wrong be upon thee: I have given my maid into thy bosom; and when she saw that she had conceived, I was despised in her eyes: the LORD judge between me and thee.

6

But Abram said unto Sarai, Behold, thy maid is in thine hand; do to her as it pleaseth thee. And when Sarai dealt hardly with her, she fled from her face.

7

And the angel of the LORD found her by a fountain of water in the wilderness, by the fountain in the way to Shur.

8

And he said, Hagar, Sarai's maid, whence camest thou? and whither wilt thou go? And she said, I flee from the face of my mistress Sarai.

9

And the angel of the LORD said unto her, Return to thy mistress, and submit thyself under her hands.

10

And the angel of the LORD said unto her, I will multiply thy seed exceedingly, that it shall not be numbered for multitude.

11

And the angel of the LORD said unto her, Behold, thou art with child and shalt bear a son, and shalt call his name Ishmael; because the LORD hath heard thy affliction.

12

And he will be a wild man; his hand will be against every man, and every man's hand against him; and he shall dwell in the presence of all his brethren.

13

And she called the name of the LORD that spake unto her, Thou God seest me: for she said, Have I also here looked after him that seeth me?

14

Wherefore the well was called Beerlahairoi; behold, it is between Kadesh and Bered.

15

And Hagar bare Abram a son: and Abram called his son's name, which Hagar bare, Ishmael.

16

And Abram was fourscore and six years old, when Hagar bare Ishmael to Abram.

Genesis 17 ;

Seven Steps to Woo Your Client and Seal the Deal

By Caterina Christakos

Wooing a client is an art form. It includes setting the stage, building rapport and convincing them that you or your company is the only one for the job. Confidence is key, as is knowing what to do and what not to do.

When wooing a client:

  1. Dress appropriately. If you are going out to an important, dinner dress the part. Shorts in a four or five star restaurant won't cut it. Call the restaurant ahead of time and see what is appropriate.

  2. If the head of the company has had articles written about him, do your research. Find out his or her likes and dislikes.

  3. Research the company thoroughly. Know what their business creed is. Find out as much as possible about what their values are.

  4. If this is a first time meeting, in their home, dress business casual and if appropriate bring a tasteful gift. Cocktail parties are, naturally, more formal and your dress should reflect that. A nice bottle of wine is always a nice touch.

  5. Keep eye contact and act naturally. Matching their movements and meeting their eyes creates a sense of trust.

  6. If at all possible, save business conversation for after the meal. Sharing a meal creates rapport plus at the end of a meal most people are more relaxed.

  7. Listen more than you speak. There will be less of a chance of offending your client, you will seem genuinely interested in them and their company and they may reveal details to you that other long winded companies courting their attention will completely miss out on.

Remember to make your encounters about them and their needs. Pay attention to how you and your company can serve them and the rest will follow. You are building a relationship with this company make sure that it is strong from the beginning.

How to Get Fast Cash without Breaking the Bank

By Caterina Christakos
:http://www.howtowriteachildrensbook.com
Many of us rack our brains for the perfect job or business opportunity to bring in extra cash. We think that we need to come up with some brilliant plan to earn the money for a nice vacation, down payment on a car or some extra cash for our kid’s tuition. Sometimes the perfect money maker is right beneath our very noses. Here are some quick tips to receive extra cash with the least amount of effort:
  1. Clean out your closets. Take out every time that you haven’t worn in the last century. Drag out those old comics. Dust off those old records. One man’s trash is another man’s treasure, as the saying goes.
    • Hold a garage sale

    • Place it on ebay

    • Bring it to a flea market and agree to split the profits with one of the vendors

    • Place ads in local papers and the pennysaver

  2. Take ten percent of your income and stick it in a savings account or better yet a high yield cd that you can’t touch for a year. Money market accounts are also a better alternative to standard bank accounts.

  3. Promote affiliate programs online. They have already set up the business for you. All you have to do is promote it and earn commissions.

  4. Form an investment club. If you don’t have a large enough pool of money to invest right now, many of your friends may be in the same boat. Pool your money together and invest in some of the safer investments right now, like bonds or CDs. You will earn together more than the measly percentage a regular account will provide.

  5. If you have recently helped finance a house sale, sell your mortgage note for a lump sum. Instead of having to wait several years to get your money, take the discount and get cash in hand now.

Caterina Christakos is a published author and national marketing consultant. She is also a full time real estate investor. For information on how you can turn your mortgage notes into cash go to: http://www.webpagedesignerforrealestate.com/cash_for_notes.htm

Tips for Effectively Communicating Through Email

by Aaron Turpen of Aaronz WebWorkz

For most everyone in business, whether for themselves or working for someone else, email has become a large percentage of their communications. For most people, the workday begins by logging into their email client and retrieving email. The first few minutes of the day are occupied drinking coffee and responding to emails received.

For some businesses, email is the most critical type of communications – surpassing even the old standby, the phone.

No matter how often you use it, email is probably an important part of your personal and corporate communications. Despite this, many are not trained or do not understand the proper “etiquette” involved in using this powerful tool. After all, you can send and receive emails to and from any part of the world is seconds, but if you aren’t using the medium well, you may not be communicating effectively.

Here are a few tips to enhance your email communications that will save you time, increase your effectiveness, and make you appear much more professional.

  1. Make your subject line actually mean something.

    I’m amazed at how many people use subject lines like “Cool” or “Good Stuff” to describe their email. These types of messages invariably end up at the bottom of my “to read” list in favor of more descriptive subjects such as “Project Quote Needed” or “CGI Problem.”

  2. Keep your message short.

    Of all the email rules, this is the one I break most often. I am, after all, a good talker and since I type 80wpm, I can translate this into long emails. This is not usually a good way to communicate. I compromise by making sure the gist of my email is inside the first few sentences and go from there.

  3. DON’T TYPE LIKE THIS

    That’s considered yelling and is very rude and annoying. Enough said.

  4. When you reply, include some sort of “recap” of the prior message.

    When responding (replying) to a message, make sure that at least enough of the original message is included that the receiver will remember what was being said. If you’re an AOL user, this is even more important since AOL’s email client does not quote the original email by default.

  5. Watch your spelling

    Use a spellchecker if you can, but watch your spelling. Common typos and other “hurried” mistakes can really undermine your professionalism. Take the extra few seconds to re-read what you’ve typed at least once before you hit the “send” button.

  6. Don’t use HTML email unless it’s REALLY necessary.

    I can’t count the number of emails I receive with those nifty “themes” included – graphical backgrounds, sidebars, signatures, etc. Funny thing is, most of them appear as an email with a bunch of graphic file attachments and probably don’t look anything like what the sender expected. I usually make sure to thank the sender for sending me their clipart, even though I really have no use for it.

  7. Use the BCC tag to send your jokes, chain letters, etc.

    I can’t stand seeing an email that starts off with a huge chain of “To” and “Cc” emails at the top. Not only is this unsightly, it is also an open invitation for the one bad apple in the bunch to gather the emails for his/her SPAM list. Send the email to yourself and include all of those people in the “Bcc” field (Blind Carbon Copy). This way, each recipient sees only his or her email and yours. Much cleaner and much safer.

  8. Answer email quickly.

    Obviously, this needs to be taken with a grain of salt. Don’t ruin your productivity by jumping every time the email sound is made on your computer. Make sure, however, that you answer email in a timely fashion (within a working day is best). I personally check email first thing in the morning, mid-day, and at the end of the working day. I also periodically check during the day as time permits or as a distraction to freshen my mind.

  9. Use a signature file.

    Your email signature, which most email clients can insert automatically, is a great way to communicate not only who you are, but also what you do. I keep a list of rotating signatures which include quick (one-line) marketing copy and a link to my website. In this way, no matter who you send email to or when, you are letting them know who you are and even where you are.

  10. Don’t believe anything that someone forwards to you.

    In my experience, 99.99% of the stuff you receive in your email announcing that some big company is giving money to people who forward the email for a test; announcing that some guy in any country starting with “N” needs you to “store” millions of dollars for him; or that if you send this email to 100 people, you’ll have good luck, love, or whatever else – is B.S. Save the rest of the world (and your friends) from this crap and just delete it when you receive it.

These tips should get you on your way towards more effective communication. Email is a great tool, but is generally not used very well. By streamlining your use of it, you can make your corner of the ‘Net less cluttered and much more useful!

Five lessons to make you think about the way we treat people

Author Unknown

  1. First Important Lesson - Cleaning Lady.

    During my second month of college, our professor gave us a pop quiz. I was a conscientious student and had breezed through the questions, until I read the last one: "What is the first name of the woman who cleans the school?" Surely this was some kind of joke. I had seen the cleaning woman several times. She was tall, dark-haired and in her 50s, but how would I know her name? I handed in my paper, leaving the last question blank. Just before class ended, one student asked if the last question would count toward our quiz grade. "Absolutely," said the professor. "In your careers, you will meet many people. All are significant. They deserve your attention and care, even if all you do is smile and say "hello" I've never forgotten that lesson. I also learned her name was Dorothy.

  2. Second Important Lesson - Pickup in the Rain

    One night, at 11:30 p.m., an older African American woman was standing on the side of an Alabama highway trying endure a lashing rainstorm. Her car had broken down and she desperately needed a ride. Soaking wet, she decided to flag down the next car. A young white man stopped to help her, generally unheard of in those conflict-filled 1960s. The man took her to safety, helped her get assistance and put her into a taxicab. She seemed to be in a big hurry, but wrote down his address and thanked him. Seven days went by and a knock came on the man's door. To his surprise, a giant console color TV was delivered to his home. A special note was attached. It read: "Thank you so much for assisting me on the highway the other night. The rain drenched not only my clothes, but also my spirits. Then you came along. Because of you, I was able to make it to my dying husband's bedside just before he passed away. God bless you for helping me and unselfishly serving others," Sincerely, Mrs. Nat King Cole.

  3. Third Important Lesson - Always remember those who serve

    In the days when an ice cream sundae cost much less, a 10 year-old boy entered a hotel coffee shop and sat at a table. A waitress put a glass of water in front of him. "How much is an ice cream sundae?" he asked. "Fifty cents," replied the waitress. The little boy pulled his hand out of his pocket and studied the coins in it. "Well, how much is a plain dish of ice cream?" he inquired. By now more people were waiting for a table and the waitress was growing impatient. "Thirty-five cents," she brusquely replied. The little boy again counted his coins. "I'll have the plain ice cream," he said. The waitress brought the ice cream, put the bill on the table and walked away. The boy finished the ice cream, paid the cashier and left. When the waitress came back, she began to cry as she wiped down the table. There, placed neatly beside the empty dish, were two nickels and five pennies. You see, he couldn't have the sundae, because he had to have enough left to leave her a tip.

  4. Fourth Important Lesson - The Obstacles in Our Path.

    In ancient times, a King had a boulder placed on a roadway. Then he hid himself and watched to see if anyone would remove the huge rock. Some of the king's wealthiest merchants and courtiers came by and simply walked around it. Many loudly blamed the King for not keeping the roads clear, but none did anything about getting the stone out of the way. Then a peasant came along carrying a load of vegetables. Upon approaching the boulder, the peasant laid down his burden and tried to move the stone to the side of the road. After much pushing and straining, he finally succeeded. After the peasant picked up his load of vegetables, he noticed a purse lying in the road where the boulder had been. The purse contained many gold coins and a note from the King indicating that the gold was for the person who removed the boulder from the roadway. The peasant learned what many of us never understand! Every obstacle presents an opportunity to improve our condition.

  5. Fifth Important Lesson - Giving When it Counts.

    Many years ago, when I worked as a volunteer at a hospital, I got to know a little girl named Liz who was suffering from a rare & serious disease. Her only chance of recovery appeared to be a blood transfusion from her 5-year-old brother, who had miraculously survived the same disease and had developed the antibodies needed to combat the illness. The doctor explained the situation to her little brother, and asked the little boy if he would be willing to give his blood to his sister. I saw him hesitate for only a moment before taking a deep breath and saying, "Yes I'll do it if it will save her." As the transfusion progressed, he lay in bed next to his sister and smiled, as we all did, seeing the color returning to her cheeks. Then his face grew pale and his smile faded. He looked up at the doctor and asked with a trembling voice, "Will I start to die right away?". Being young, the little boy had misunderstood the doctor; he thought he was going to have to give his sister all of his blood in order to save her.

NOW more than ever - Peace...May God bless you.

Title: Personal Finance 101
Part 3 of 4
Author: David Berky

The subject of personal finance is very broad, but as a beginning, I would like to discuss what I consider the foundations of personal finance: Security, Stability, Growth and Protection & Management.

Growth

The next level of personal finance, as I alluded to before, is growth.

Once you are secure and stable, you can begin to think about building your wealth. Not that you have to figure out how to become the next Bill Gates or Warren Buffet. But you have to start building the "nest-egg" that you will rely on when you retire.

And don't think that Social Security has you covered, or that your 401k will grow back to what it was a couple years ago. Or that your current employer is going to re-institute the generous pension plans of yesteryear. 401ks are much cheaper to administer and you, the employee, take the hit when the market goes down, not the employer.

My father is nearing retirement age and I think he has a good plan. He has done some research and estimated what his expenses are going to be when he is retired. He then took a look at his potential sources of income during his retirement.

He figured that Social Security would cover about a third of what he wanted to live on. Only a third! And he has worked his entire life. Would you like to instantly have to live on only one third of what you currently make? Retirement is suppose to be the golden years, so where's the gold?

Luckily throughout his career, my father has worked for companies that have had pension plans and he had worked long enough at each company to be eligible for some pension money. This is rare these days because today the average worker will change jobs and companies at least five times during his/her career. Also, as I mentioned before, companies are switching to lower cost 401k plans that do not guarantee you any fixed payments.

In my father's situation, his pension money would cover another third of the retirement income he wanted. So now he had to either figure out where the last third was going to come from, or start cutting out expenses during retirement, like not visiting his children so much. None of us liked the sound of that.

So my father started learning about the stock market and investing in stocks and mutual funds. He made a plan for growing his wealth and then educated himself as to how he could accomplish his plan.

I wish I could say that he is doing better than he is, but luckily he has some time still to put his plan into action and ride out any market downturns. (He can do this because he has the security of insurance and emergency money, and the stability of little debt and a strong set of skills.)

By learning about how stocks, bonds, mutual funds, index funds, options, futures, commodities, real estate and other financial tools work you lay the foundation for growing your wealth. You may start with just $100 in a bank CD, but as you learn more and become more sophisticated, you can invest in more and more opportunities.

You will learn about how risk and reward are related, that as the risk increases so does the size of the potential reward. Just like at the race track, you'll make more on the long shot, but the odds are against it. Also you can learn how to tilt the odds in your favor and protect yourself against risk.

For those who are just starting out in the growth phase or who want to dabble a bit before completing the other levels of personal finance, my suggestion would be to look into index mutual funds. Especially no-load index funds (no initial/sales fee).

These funds are made up of the same stocks that make up the popular market indexes like the Dow Jones, S&P and NASDAQ100. The costs are low because management is simple and as a mutual fund you can invest a little at a time. Also they are easy to follow since you see them on all the news shows and in the newspaper.

PET CORNER

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The Animal Rescue Site is having trouble getting enough people to click on their link daily to meet their quota to getting free food donated every day to abused and neglected animals. It takes less than a minute to go to their site and click on "feed an animal in need" for free. This doesn't cost you a thing. Their corporate sponsors/advertisers use the number of daily visits to donate food to abandoned/neglected animals in exchange for advertising.
Here's the web site! Pass it along to people you know. http://www.theanimalrescuesite.com
As a pet owner, no doubt you want to give your dog or cat the best care possible. And caring for your pet means feeding him the best diet you can.
Animals, because they are color blind, choose their foods by smell. Most dogs like gamely flavors best, as well as liver, fat, garlic, onions, horsemeat, lamb, beef, cheese and fish. Cats enjoy chicken, liver, fish, turkey, lamb, and yeast, and prefer fresh to aged flavors.
Remember that cats are fussy eaters and it is not wise to continually feed them their favorite foods. Soon they will refuse to eat anything else; it is your job to see your cat has a balanced diet.
Animals do not need salt added to their diet as the natural salt in the food is enough for them.
Dogs may eat any vegetable they want, but cats should not have any starchy veggies, like peas and corn. Some dogs and cats even enjoy fruits!
It's a good idea to always add a grain, such as Kibble, wheat germ, cooked oatmeal or whole wheat bread to meat dinners. For dogs use 75% carbohydrate foods (grains and vegetables) to 25% meat; for cats use half carbohydrate foods to half meat.
You will find, once you begin making your own pet foods, that it is really relatively simple and you will save some money as well. remember that all pet foods should be served at room temperature; don't serve food cold from the refrigerator nor hot from the stove.
Incidentally, you should know that cats should be fed three times a day, while an adult dog needs only one meal a day.
Here are some pet recipes you can make at home:
  • SAUTEED LIVER
    • 1 teaspoon corn oil
    • 1/4 pound beef liver
    • 1/2 cup water
    Heat 1 teaspoon corn oil in a pan. Add 1/4 pound beef liver and fry on both sides until cooked but not dry inside. Add 1/2 cup water to the pan and mix it up with all the brown bits. For dogs, cut the liver into pieces and serve; for cats, grind the liver in a blender, using the pan juices.
  • CHICKEN SOUP
    • 1 chicken liver
    • 1 giblet
    • 1 chicken heart
    • 1 chicken neck
    • 2 cups water
    • 1 tablespoon finely chopped parsley.
    Combine 1 chicken liver, 1 giblet, 1 chicken heart, 1 chicken neck, 2 cups water and 1 tablespoon finely chopped parsley. Cover and simmer until the giblet is tender. Chop all the meat for dogs removing bones and mix with kibble; for cats, you may want to grind the meat in the blender.
  • VEAL STEW
    • 1/2 pound stewing veal
    • 1 cup canned tomatoes
    • 1 cup water
    • 1 chicken bouillon cube
    • 1/2 onion (chopped), parsley dash of garlic powder
    Combine 1/2 pound stewing veal, 1 cup canned tomatoes, 1 cup water, 1 chicken bouillon cube, 1/2 onion (chopped), parsley and a dash of garlic powder in a pot and simmer. When meat is tender, remove all the bones. For dogs, cut the meat in chunks, and mix stew with kibble or some other grain; for cats, grind the stew in blender, adding a tablespoon of wheat germ or 1/2 slice of whole wheat bread.
  • LIVER COOKIES
    • 1/2 cup dry milk
    • 1/2 cup wheat germ
    • 1 teaspoon honey
    • 3 1/3 oz. jar of strained liver baby food
    Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Combine dry milk and wheat germ; drizzle honey on top. Add jar of strained liver baby food or homemade blended liver and stir until everything is well mixed. Form the mixture into balls; place them on an oiled cookie sheet and flatten them with a fork. Bake 8 to 10 minutes. Consistency should be fudgy. Store in a jar in the fridge; freeze if keeping more than a few days.
  • LAMB STEW
    • 1/2 pound stewing lamb
    • 1 cup water
    • 1 chicken bouillon cube
    • 1/2 onion (chopped), parsley dash of garlic powder
    Follow the recipe for Veal Stew, using chunks of lamb instead and leaving out the tomato if desired.
  • MACKEREL DINNER
    • 1 small mackerel
    • 1/2 cup hot water
    • 1 tsp. corn oil
    BR> Heat 1 tsp. corn oil in a skillet and fry 1 small mackerel until it flakes apart easily. Remove and cool. Pour 1/2 cup hot water into the pan and scrape the brown bits into it. Remove the bones from the fish and mix with the juice. For dogs, serve in pieces with kibble; for cats, grind with the pan juices.
  • FISH COOKIES
    • 1/2 cup dry milk
    • 1/2 cup wheat germ
    • 1 teaspoon honey
    • 3 1/2 ounces of mashed and boned mackere
    Follow the recipe for Liver Cookies but use instead 3 1/2 ounces of mashed and boned mackerel, either canned or freshly cooked.
  • BEEF COOKIES
    • 1/2 cup dry milk
    • 1/2 cup wheat germ
    • 1 teaspoon honey
    • 3 1/3 oz.cooked beef puree
    Following the recipe for Liver Cookies, using cooked beef puree instead.
  • DOG MORSELS
    • 2 cups whole wheat flour
    • 2 tsp. garlic powder
    • 2 cups white flour
    • 1 cup skim milk powder
    • 2 eggs
    • water
    • 1/2 cup melted beef or pork drippings (or lard)
    Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Mix ingredients together with enough water to make a stiff dough. Roll out and cut into Christmas shapes. Bake on cookie sheet until hard.
  • KITTY TREATS
    • 1 1/2 cups rolled oats
    • 1/4 cup vegetable oil
    • 1/2 cup flour
    • 1/2 cup tuna oil, chicken broth or beef bouillon
    Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Mix all ingredients into a dough. Dust hands with flour and form small, 1/2-inch-thick, round "biscuits". Set on greased cookie sheet. Bake 30 minutes (or until biscuits are slightly browned).
    Cool 30 minutes before serving.
  • BUDGIE BROWNIES
    • 1 cup cornmeal
    • 1 tsp. finely ground cuttlebone
    • 1 cup hulled millet
    • 2 tbsp. liquid honey
    • 1/4 cup whole wheat flour
    • 2 eggs
    • 2 tbsp. raw wheat germ
    • 4 egg yolks (for larger birds add 1/2 cup peanuts or coconut)
    Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Place all ingredients into a bowl and mix well. Pat into a greased and floured baking dish. Bake for 30 minutes or until firm (if edges start to get too brown, cover with foil).
    Cool and cut into small squares.
HERB TIPS
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Herb Gardening

Herbs are a special group of plants used for flavoring and scents. Many herbs used in flavoring foods and teas (culinary herbs) can be grown in gardens. Most herbs should be grown in full sun, but a few tolerate light shade. They prefer a well-drained soil of medium fertility with a pH of 6.0 to 7.0. An organic mulch in summer benefits the plants.

Herbs that are annuals are planted every year, biennials that are planted in the fall and flower the following ear, hardy perennials that come back year after year, and tender perennials that may survive a mild winter but often need to be treated as annuals or protected from freezing temperatures.

You can start most popular herbs from seeds. Many of the perennial herbs are propagated by stem cutting, layering, or crown divisions. Annual and some perennial herb plants are sold at nursery and garden centers, and seeds and plants are offered by many mail order catalog companies.

Because herbs are used in very small amounts, just a few plants of each type may be enough. If you want a large quantity of a particular herb, such as sweet basil for making pesto, plant the herb in the vegetable garden. Otherwise, prepare a small area especially for herbs so you can enjoy them for their appearance as well as fragrance.

Herbs have few pests, which is good because there are few if any pesticides approved for use on these plants. When planting herbs in the vegetable garden, protect them from pesticides used on vegetables.

Grow herbs started from containers so you can set them in the garden without disturbing the roots. Borage and dill are two herbs that do not transplant well if bare-root. Either scatter seeds in the garden where these herbs are to grow, or start plants in containers.

The flavors and scents of herbs are due to oils in the plant tissue. High fertilization, excess moisture, and shade result in low oil content and weak flavor. The oil content in many herbs is at its highest just before the plant begins to flower.

4 Secrets to A Flat Stomach

By Jesse Cannone

Do you want a flat stomach? I don't know a person who doesn't!

People spend millions, if not billions of dollars, each year in the quest for a flat stomach. Right now there are about 200 or more ab exercise devices out there. There's the ab do-it, the ab rock-it, the ab roller, the ab dolly, and so many more. You would think that with all of these amazing new products that most people would be walking around with that nice, lean mid-section they've always wanted. Unfortunately, that's not the case.

Most, if not all of these products, will do little or nothing to flatten your stomach. And that's because these exercise contraptions cannot eliminate the layer of fat that lies on top of your abs.

In order to be successful at thinning your waistline you must have a basic under standing of how the ab muscles function and how your body burns fat. The first thing that needs to be understood is the difference between fat and muscle. Fat is excess calories and is primarily stored in layers on top of muscle tissue. Muscle is made up of fibers that contract or shorten to produce movement. Fat cannot turn into muscle and muscle cannot turn into fat! However, you can lose muscle and you can gain fat. That's what happens to most people.

So if your goal is to thin your waist line and have a nice flat stomach, the first thing you need to do is decrease / eliminate the layers of fat that are on top of your abs. We all have a flat stomach; it's just some of oar’s are covered by excess fat.

The most effective way of flattening your stomach is a combination of strength training (with a extra focus on mid-section), cardiovascular exercise (short, hard workouts), and stable blood sugar (keeps you from adding additional fat and makes it easier for the body to use body fat for fuel).

  1. You must do some form of progressive strength training

    The primary function of the ab muscle is to flex your torso forward. However, there are also muscles that flex your torso to the side and muscles that rotate your torso. Often times you see people on their ab roller every day doing hundreds of crunches or sit-ups.

    If you want to effectively strengthen your stomach you need to incorporate the following types of exercises:

    • 1-2 forward flexion exercises (crunch, sit-up, etc.)
    • 1-2 side flexion exercises (side bends, side crunches, etc.)
    • 1-2 rotational exercises (trunk rotations, standing twists, etc.)

    The abs, are muscles just like any other and should be worked at most 3 times per week. You also want to make sure you are training them progressively, working them harder each time.

  2. Use short, hard cardio workouts to increase metabolism

    Cardio workouts are important because they CAN, if done correctly, increase your metabolism for 4-24 hours or more! This means you are less likely to store any excess calories as body fat because they are more likely to be used by your elevated metabolism. Plus, you are more likely to burn off some excess body fat.

    Below is a sample interval workout that can be done with just about any activity (walking, bicycling, swimming, stair climbing, etc.).

    Warm up at easy pace 2-5 minutes à Perform 30 seconds of hard work (almost as hard as possible) à perform 1 minute of moderate work (recovery time-catch breath)à Repeat this process 6-10 times à Cool down at an easy pace for 2-5 minutes

  3. Stable blood sugar is the key

    And most importantly, you must stabilize your blood sugar! This is by far the most important factor when it comes to burning away that excess body fat and keeping it off! To effectively stabilize your blood sugar you must feed your body frequently; like every 2-3 hours. The key is to give your body only what it needs at that time. Your body burns calories 24 hours a day, so, why would you only feed it once or twice a day? Give your body the fuel it needs: vegetables, fruits, nuts, berries, whole grains, and lean proteins (chicken, fish, lean beef, eggs, etc.).

    Many people are too hung up on how much fat is in food, or how healthy of a choice it is. Calories are calories and it doesn’t matter where they come from. If there’s extra… where’s it going? Yup, you guessed it… body fat!

    This is not to say that what you eat is not important because it is, it just doesn’t have that much of an affect when it comes to fat loss. Try to make healthy choices whenever possible, but don’t feel like if you eat a cheeseburger it is guaranteed to be stored as fat.

  4. Get the help of a professional

    Unfortunately, most people don’t know enough about the human body, nutrition, or effective exercise to meet their health and fitness goals. Ask yourself this one question, “Am I happy with my current progress or condition?” If you’re not, you should consider getting the help of a qualified personal fitness professional. Don’t depend on the information you get from magazines or from your local gym/ health club. A qualified fitness professional can help you achieve your health and fitness goals, and in less time than you would imagine.

If you are serious about your health and fitness goals, and you are ready for that flat stomach, I recommend you start implementing the 4 strategies listed in this article. These 4 strategies can help you take control of your metabolism and burn off that excess body fat and having you looking and feeling great!
