(And we should not keep that a secret.) The universal Christian hope (confidence and expectation) is written: "When Christ who is our life appears, then you also will appear with Him in glory." (Colossians 3:4) The Lord Jesus Christ Himself is our Life. That is the central fact and reality to any kind of authentic Christian faith. I'm not saying this in order to try and exclude Christian believers who may still be mired down in the religious teachings and practices of their local church. After all, that would be most of us a lot of the time. The central reality of spiritual life in Jesus Christ is the Lord Jesus Himself -- not the religious trappings our particular group may also embrace. And let's face it, we all embrace some of the religious trappings that go along with modern church affiliation. Some of us think that we "must" raise our hands when we sing and pray. Some feel that we "must" drink real fermented wine when observing the Lord's Supper. Some feel that to speak in tongues or to share a "word of knowledge" from the Lord is a mark of emotionalism or even Satanic influence. We all have our religious convictions, just as we all have daily rituals at home about when and how to eat a meal, how to wake up each morning, or how to prepare the car for the night. For example, I discipline myself to put the car away, in the garage, each night, even if the weather seems pleasant. Living in Montana, I don't want to come out the next morning and scrape a quarter inch of ice off the windshield, or sweep off 6 inches of snow. In the same way, we all have certain rituals about how and when to pray, which songs to sing in worship, when to stand, sit or kneel before the Lord. Some of us work to train ourselves to read the Bible every morning -- so as not to let the day get away without spending time alone with the Lord in His Word. Some of us are convinced we must give a tithe of our income to the local church. Some of us believe firmly that we must set aside Sunday or Saturday as the day of worship and gathering with others. While there is certainly nothing wrong with such convictions and practices, we should be careful to remember that these things do not make us better Christians than those who think and do otherwise. In fact, Paul tells us that we're free, and that all things are lawful -- but not everything is expedient. He writes to the believers at Corinth, for example: "All things are lawful unto me, but all things are not expedient: all things are lawful for me, but I will not be brought under the power of any." (1 Corinthians 6:12 KJV) "All things are lawful for me, but all things are not expedient: all things are lawful for me, but all things edify not." (1 Corinthians 10:23 KJV) In other words, we're not bound by a set of rules that say we must do certain special things in order to guarantee our spiritual life -- but not everything we choose to do is truly beneficial or helpful in our spiritual walk and life. It's wise, good, and fine for us to practice the things that encourage our faith and life in Jesus Christ -- rather than doing things that weaken our faith, add to everyone's unhappiness, or keep us under a load of guilt. On the other hand, none of the "good" things we enjoy doing will add to our salvation -- which is already complete in Jesus Christ. Consider the following New Testament passage: "Beware lest anyone cheat you through philosophy and empty deceit, according to the tradition of men, according to the basic principles of the world, and not according to Christ. For in Him dwells all the fullness of the Godhead bodily; and you are complete in Him, who is the head of all principality and power." (Colossians 2:8-10 NKJB) Here is the same verse in another translation: "See to it that no one takes you captive through philosophy and empty deceit, according to human tradition, according to the elemental spirits of the universe, and not according to Christ. For in him the whole fullness of deity dwells bodily, and you have come to fullness in him, who is the head of every ruler and authority." (Colossians 2:8-10 NRSV) The unbelieving world is not the only influence that sometimes resists a healthy Christian faith. Religion itself can sometimes oppose our sincere faith and confidence in Jesus Christ. When we begin to do things in order to "secure our position" with God or to ensure that we go to heaven, we are forgetting and ignoring what Jesus did for us. Jesus Christ is our life. We are complete in Him. No set of religious or other philosophical ideas, practices, or church membership will make us "more saved" than we already are when we first place our trust in Jesus Christ Himself. I am by no means trying to say that what we do in life makes no difference. Everything we say and do makes a difference in our own lives, and in precious lives all around us. As God's children, we're part of a great body of believers -- the church around the world, the body of Jesus Christ. And as members of that great spiritual (and physical) body, we're the hand of God in many people's lives. What we say -- or fail to say -- makes a difference in our families, in our workplaces and schools, in our neighborhoods and towns. What we do -- or fail to do -- also makes a big difference. But all our spiritual life, power, and strength to carry on will always come directly from Jesus Christ Himself. It does not come through some prophet or Christian leader or groups of leaders and teachers. We give ourselves to Jesus and He gives His life to us through the Holy Spirit that comes down to us from Him. Turn your eyes upon Jesus. Look to Him each day for all that you need and desire from God. Be loyal to Him above all things. He is our life. We are complete in Him. I'm sure you won't disagree with this... The easiest way to make money in any business is to just give people what they want. I don't mean literally give it to them. I mean if you offer people what they want they WILL buy it from you. It's a simple formula that's been around since the beginning of time and it never fails. Why? Effective leadership means offering people the chance to grow. Recognize their contribution with positive feedback, raises, and advancement to more challenging positions. People who are willing to expand into new things while working with a diverse set of co-workers will learn new roles and expand their view of the world. These people may be few and far between, but they enrich the work environment and contribute to a stronger organization. Since the dawn of time, stories have been the conduit of learning... the sacred baton, passed from one generation to the next... without which, human development would stand still. We are creatures of story... Just the other day I was reviewing a lead generation campaign a client sent me for critique. He had also sent me some of his competitors marketing materials, and I looked at them too. My young marketing friend had taken the same lifeless approach as his opponents. He had begun as most corporate advertisers do, with a lifeless litany of meaningless platitudes. It was about as interesting as warmed over oatmeal gone cold. "Suppose you were the customer, " I said to my friend. "Be him for a minute. Realize that he faces stacks of these things, they're piling up to the ceiling in his office, these dry institutional marketing pieces he must read on his employer's time. No wonder he hates sales people and marketers. He is drowning in their paper excrement. Can you see him? He wants to burn the piles up. Suddenly something snaps... He goes mad. By this time the drapes have caught fire and the place is turning into an inferno. He stops for a moment to read the last sales copy he will ever see. And what does he read? BLT Wraps ---------------------------------------------------------- 1 pound thick sliced bacon, cut into 1 inch pieces 4 (12 inch) flour tortillas 1 cup shredded Cheddar cheese 1/2 head iceberg lettuce, shredded 1 tomato, diced Place bacon in a large, deep skillet. Cook over medium-high heat until evenly brown. Drain, and set aside. Place 1 tortilla on a microwave-safe plate. Sprinkle tortilla with 1/4 cup cheese. Cook in microwave 1 to 2 minutes, or until cheese is melted. Immediately top with 1/4 of the bacon, lettuce, and tomato. Fold sides of tortilla over, then roll up. Repeat with remaining ingredients. Once their curiosity has been satisfied about a class visitor, they can more easily return to the expectation of completing their assigned task. I may then concentrate on observing Johnny's behavior and work effort in the classroom. There are numerous factors that may be interfering with Johnny's attentive and productive behavior in the classroom. In my initial observation, I wish to determine if Johnny might be struggling to remain on-task due to excess restless energy and activity level. Children who are moderately or excessively hyperactive will frequently have trouble sitting in their chair. They are wiggly and uncomfortable sitting in place for minutes at a time. Often these children may choose to stand in front of their desk to do their work. This "standing" may often appear to be more of a restless dance rather than actual standing in place. Excess activity and energy may also elicit frequent movement to the pencil sharpener, bathroom, or to nearby classmates to monitor their work production. This restless and off-task behavior may appear to be outside of Johnny's immediate control. If hyperactive forms of behavior are not disrupting Johnny, I may notice other interferences to his work production including daydreaming, visual distractibility, staring into space, socializing with neighbors, playing with work materials, or engaging in other work related activities other than the assigned task. Although the majority of these behaviors are often described as "un-focused" behavior, only a few are generally judged to be related to the attention deficits observed in ADHD. If Johnny is "zoning out" and daydreaming, there is a greater possibility of an attention deficit interference. Daydreaming could also be observed as falling into an ADHD consideration. However, the remaining off-task behaviors can also be observed to suggest the alternative interferences of low academic motivation, learning weaknesses, or emotional difficulties. The introduction of the earlier described positive reinforcement system will be a critical intervention to help determine the nature of Johnny's work interference in the classroom. Improving motivation and reinforcing productive work efforts may increase the time Johnny spends at his desk trying to complete his assigned work. It will then be possible to observe the efficiency of Johnny's work effort including his attention to task. By observation, I can qualitatively evaluate his ability to attend to task as opposed to inattention and off-task behavior as a product of task difficulty. The ability to attend to a task is distinguished as a neuro-cognitive ability to regulate concentration and mental energy. However, inattention that results from weak task comprehension or problem solving is more suggestive of the struggle experienced with learning difficulties. If Johnny appears to be struggling to complete an assignment due to task difficulty, I may want to further evaluate the possibility of a learning disability or intellectual weakness that may be eliciting Johnny's inattention. While ADHD cannot be ruled out as a possible interference, learning weaknesses may be presenting as a primary interference. Johnny may independently choose to seek teacher assistance when he feels unable to complete a challenging task. Yet there are many occasions when students fail to assertively approach a classroom teacher for assistance when they need it. Students need to be encouraged to ask for teacher support when they encounter academic tasks that exceed their ability level. In certain subject areas, Johnny may be paired with a helping classmate in an effort to provide him with ongoing task assistance. Classroom aides are sometimes available to provide a similar support for students in need. Learning specialists will occasionally design their intervention services to be provided in the classroom so that they may offer their academic support to regular education students as well as those identified for Special Education services. Johnny may experience greater academic success with the infusion of specific learning accommodations to help him learn and perform in the classroom. Although differentiated instruction is routinely offered by learning specialists to individual special education students, it remains possible for similar learning strategies to be used by the regular education classroom teacher for the benefit of all students. However, I will not under emphasize the challenge realized by teachers attempting to introduce different instructional strategies to assist students' routine learning in the classroom. Classroom teachers may not have adequate time necessary to incorporate numerous instructional strategies and learning accommodations into the established classroom curriculum. Yet it is my personal experience that teachers readily embrace these different teaching strategies as a way to assist individual students who may struggle with isolated learning skills. The application of these individual learning strategies into the instruction for the majority of classroom students remains the critical instructional challenge for the typical classroom teacher. I am a child psychologist recently retired from the public school district. I continue to maintain a private practice devoted to the assessment of ADHD in children.
