5 Steps To Turbochare Your Success!
By Lynnea Hagen
Let's take an imaginary journey. Better yet, imagine that you wish to take a driving trip across the country from New York to San Francisco. There are more than a couple of ways to head out on this trip. But, you have limited time and resources, AND you want this trip to be productive, enjoyable, and NOT stress-inducing.
Which of the two following approaches makes the most sense: (A) Saying "I'm going to San Francisco" then jump into your vehicle, and head out with no planning? Or, (B) creating a mental picture of how you'd spend your time (and money) in San Francisco? Would you know the reason for your trip? In other words, how would you prepare for the trip? Would you map out how to get there? Would you know who would be traveling with you, and what their responsibilities for the trip might be? Would you figure out how much money you would need to get there (not to mention, get back home)? How much time will you allow for the trip? How many stops will you need to make? And, finally, how will you keep from running out of fuel (emotionally, physically, and financially) before the trip is completed? (This last question is addressed in my "Running on a Full Tank" class. The rest of the questions can be addressed by thinking deeply, and following 5 major steps to success, below).
Using the above analogy, let's say that the destination is your success in business. How well can you define the following: your ultimate destination (your vision), why your business exists (your mission), how you measure your progress (your objectives), what ongoing steps you will need to perform (your strategies), and what projects need to be implemented (your action plans)?
In the examples above, most small business owners try to run their business using the (A) approach. They have sort of named a destination ("I want to have a business doing_____"), and set out to "go there" with no real planning. With this approach, how much time and other resources are wasted on taking wrong turns, not having carity about where they're going, why, with whom, and what exactly needs to be done to reach their destination?
If you're really serious about reaching your success destination, my challenge to you is to create a powerful, energizing, inspiring, step-by-step plan that clearly maps out everything needed to get there. I love using "The One Page Business Plan" system. So with this as my guide, I've mapped out your 5-step journey to success.
Vision - (What are you building)
Describe with great clarity what your business will look like in 3 to 5 years. How much revenue will it generate, with how many employees, serving what geography, serving what type of client, and providing what service? You may even want to specify what technologies you will use, or what ideals you will incorporate into your company culture. If you have a goal of giving 10% of your profits to a favorite cause, include that, too. In other words, dare to dream...and dare to dream specifically and boldly!
Mission - (Why does your business exist?)
When I work with a client to create business plans, this is very often the area on which we spend the most time...and for good reason. A well defined mission should not only inspire you and your employees, but customers as well. To do so, it should encapsulate the reason why, on a deeper level, you have chosen to be in this business, and what sets your business apart. It's timeless. (Examples: The History Channel: "Where history comes alive"; Nature Concervancy: "Saving the last great places"; Lenscrafters: "Helping people see better, one hour at a time"). A mission can compel and impel you (and others) to action. And, when the going gets rough, or you're feeling discouraged, it acts as the inspiration and energizer to keep you going.
Objectives - (What are the specific measures?)
Objectives must be graphable. They define your goals...what you need less of, or more of, to be successful. Maybe you want more revenue, profits, clients, or store locations. Great! How much more? Now, what do you want less of?...inventory, printing costs, automotive costs? Terrific! How much less?
Stated another way, what numbers do you need in order to assess the health, the pulse of your business? What statistics indicating the health of your business would be on a single page...to be faxed to you while you're lying on a beach in Tahiti?
Strategies - (What are the right things we have to do over time?)
How will you grow and manage this business? Strategies provide a framework for what you will and will NOT do. They establish best practices, set the direction on such areas as marketing, product pricing, internet presence, strategic alliances, target markets, employee retention, and positioning. Examples include: Doing a product roll-out at a major trade show, forming a strategic alliance with a "power partner", setting up a testimonial or referral program.
Action Plans - (What is the work to be done?)
What projects do you need to work on this year? Who is responsible for each of these projects, and when will the projects be completed (what date)? For example, my action plans include: by the end of April, schedule and announce 3 dates for my workshops; write and submit 2 articles by the end of May; put 12 speaking engagements on my calendar by April 30th; complete new CD products by June 30th. Each of these is a project, which will support my objectives and strategies.
So, there you have it...5 steps to turbocharging your success. Are these steps simple? Yes. Are they simplistic? Absolutely not! Writing plans is difficult. Quality thinking and writing take time. But don't worry about getting it "right", just get it in writing. It can be edited later, undoubtedly in 3 months it will be significantly different, and probably much better.
You and I have the ability to design our future, our lives, our success for as long as we can breathe and dream. By putting planning into the mix, you'll have the map and compass to reach your destinations and achieve your dreams far more quickly and better than you could have imagined. So, dream, plan, and move into your greatness!

Affiliate Marketing Tips - The Different Types Of Affiliate Programs
By Simon Akers
If you have decided to promote other people's products as an affiliate you may not be aware of the different types of affiliate programs available to you. So if you are serious about affiliate marketing you will want to know which option best suits you.
The most popular type of affiliate program involves the product owner offering a percentage of each sale as a commission to affiliates. Most affiliate programs will offer 50% commissions but some will offer as much as 90% commissions. This is a single tier affiliate program where affiliates are only paid for the sales that they refer.
Some affiliate programs will also give you the opportunity to recruit secondary tier affiliates and earn a percentage commission from each sale that they generate (normally around 5% to 10% per sale). Occasionally you may also find an affiliate program that offers multiple tiers allowing you to profit from sub affiliates on many levels.
Single tier affiliate programs are what most people are familiar with as they are the most common but its not the only way to profit from affiliate marketing. Its now possible to earn commissions for each lead that you refer and even each click that you generate which can be far more lucrative than just getting paid for each sale.
These type of affiliate programs are classified under Pay Per Performance where you are paid for each sale, each lead, or each click that you generate. So whenever someone you refer takes action and completes a certain task you will get paid a commission by the merchant.
Pay Per Click
This type of affiliate program allows you to earn a commission for each click that you send to the merchant's website and you will still get paid even if the person doesn't actually buy anything. The problem with this is that the commissions are usually very small so it requires a large volume to make it worthwhile.
Pay Per Lead
This type of affiliate program allows you to earn a commission for each lead that you send to the merchant's website so you will get paid whenever one of your referrals fills out a form with their details and you will get paid a small commission ranging from $1 to $20 or more. Because this can be so lucrative its much harder to find these types of affiliate programs.
Pay Per Sale
This type of affiliate program allows you to earn a commission for each sale that you send to the merchant's website so if the person doesn't actually but anything you will not get paid. Because its harder to get people to order you will be rewarded with large commissions as high as 90% of each sale that you generate.
Residual
This type of affiliate program allows you to earn a residual commission for each sale that you send to the merchant's website so not only will you earn a commission from the initial sale but also on a recurring basis usually each month. This is fast becoming one of the most popular types of affiliate program because you get rewarded multiple times for the same amount of effort used to generate a single sale.
Choosing which type of affiliate program is right for you will depend on what your budget is and what type of website you have. If you have a large content website that generates a lot of traffic you may find it more profitable to find a Pay Per Lead affiliate program rather than the traditional Pay Per Sale.
But if you have a large budget to spend on advertising you should try to find a residual affiliate program in order to generate maximum profits. Its just a case experimenting and testing the different types of affiliates programs to see which best suits your website or budget.

In these times of fast food, it has become imperative to brush up our formal dining etiquette. Nowadays, formal sit-down dinners are becoming less frequent. There comes a business lunch or a dinner at a swanky restaurant where you are required to be sophistication incarnate displaying flawless table etiquette.
Behaving boorishly on that one important dinner due to a lack of adequate knowledge of table manners could be your undoing. It is not difficult to pick up the basics. So let us brush up our table manners.
In any invitation, there are two perspectives. You are either the host or a guest. The main table manners, however, are the same in both cases.
Let us have a look at some of the common table manners.
- It is perfectly okay to eat finger foods with your fingers. You can bite off pieces of larger savouries. If they are messy, use your fork or spoon. the following items: bread, cookies, corn on the cob, chips, french fries, hors d'oeuvres, sandwiches, small fruits, berries, and cubed cheese are finger foods.
- Never put an entire sandwich, however tiny, into your mouth. Eat it in small bites.
- Take care not to dip the serving tongs into your teacup while adding sugar.
- After stirring sugar into your tea, place your teaspoon on the saucer.
- Never blow on your tea. A hot cup of tea should be kept on the table to cool off. And don't slurp when you drink anything.
- As soon as you are seated, pull out the napkin from its setting, unfold it and place it on your lap. Never truck your napkin into your collar. At the end of the meal, allow the waiter to clear all your plates. Then lay the napkin at the centre of the table.
- If you have to leave the table inadvertently during the meal, put your napkin on the left of your plate or leave it on your chair with the soiled part facing down.
- If you happen to drop your napkin on the floor, do not pick it up. Signal to the serving staff to supply you with a fresh one.
- Dab your napkin lightly on your lips. Never scrub your mouth with your napkin.
- Do not stretch across the table to pick up politely ask the person nearest to it to pass the item to you. If you are requested to pass something, pick up and place it near the person next to you. Things are not passed hand-to-hand. In addition, it is incorrect for anyone other than the original requestor to use the item passed.
- Never talk with your mouth full of food. Cover your mouth if you need to cough or sneeze.
- Do not rest your elbows on the table. It is okay to put part of your upper arm on the table.
- If you have something in your mouth that you want to spit out, put it on the fork and place in on your plate discretely.
- The correct way of using a spoon or a fork is by balancing them between the first knuckle of the middle finger and the tip of the index finger while using the thumb to steady the handle. The knife is used with the tip of the index finger gently pressing out over the top of the blade.
- Hold the fork with your left hand and spoon (or knife) with your right. However, you can dispense with the spoon (or knife) if you use the fork, how held your right hand.
- To indicate that you have finished your meal, place the fork and knife (or spoon) horizontally on the plate, parallel to each other, facing away from you.
- To eat your soup, half fill your soupspoon and moving it away from your body sip it from the side of the spoon.
- When presented with the finger bowl, delicately dip your fingers in the water and gently dab them with the napkin.
When invited to a dinner, arrive on time and leave on time. Do not wait till the host starts dropping not-so-subtle hints like "what a big day I have tomorrow." Many a times you decide to invite a prestigious guest for a meal at a high-end restaurant. The person is important to you. There are certain do's and dont's, if followed diligently, would leave a favourable impression on your guest.
There are a few things you must ensure to make the occasion a resounding success.
# Choose a restaurant conducive to your meeting. Keep in mind the taste and profile of the guests and the occasion before selecting the place. If you are meeting to discuss something important, give the resto-bar a miss. Opt for a muted, classy place instead.
# Make reservations in advance. It would be unseemly to land there and find no place. If you have visited the restaurant before, book a table suitable for your meeting.
# Inform your guest about the venue and time and confirm that the reservations have been made under your name.
# Always reach the place 10 minutes before the appointed time. Check whether everything is in order.
# Inform your waiter that you are waiting for someone and request the waiter to direct him or her to your table on arrival. It would be a good thing to find out the waiter's name.
# While waiting, you can order a non-alcoholic beverage for yourself.
# Have a look at the menu and find out the specialities of the day.
# Do not talk about personal issues while the waiter is present. Once he has taken the order and moved away, draw your guest out with small talk on general topics like the weather or the guest's interests etc.
# Offer the menu to your guest. Give your suggestions regarding the options only when asked.
# Turn your cell phone on vibrator mode.
Be it at a restaurant or home, a formal dinner requires a formal dress. You are expected to dress for the party. At the end of the day, your self-confidence carries you through.
Therefore, it is important to keep your poise.

How To Keep Your Blog Readers Interested
By Paul Savage
First things first, post often !
One thing that is important when you have a blog is that you have dynamic content (content that changes over time). This will encourage people to check back to your site regularly. Updating your blog once a month, really isn't going to encourage people to check back every day. Depending on what you like to blog about (your life, sports, news, etc) , try to be at least regular in the amount of postings you have. My recommendation is to aim for at least one good post a week.
What to write ?
People always say to me, sure I would love to blog, but I don't know what to write. It's simple as, write what you feel passionate about, write about what you find interesting or quirky in the world today, write about interesting websites you come across. But one key point is to make sure you stick to your niche, don't start changing the direction of your blog drastically overnight. It is important that someone who reads your postings has an idea of what to expect when they come across a new post. Sure you can evolve over time and add more sections to your blog. But I would advise that for the start you stick to a few key categories.
How to write an Interesting Post
The key here is to understand who will be reading your posts, who are you aiming to reach in your blog. Also keep in mind the subject matter, some subjects lead themselves better to being written in slang, others need to be written in cleaner English. Either way there should be a flow to your blog, and it should be consistent.
Include Links to your Sources
When you write a post, it is important to reference your ideas and inspiration. Your posting should be transparent, and allow the reader to check your sources if they so wish. Adding this type of creditability will lead the reader to trusting you more. There is a fine line in referencing too many or too little web pages. I would aim to keep it below 2 per paragraph on average. Spreading the "Link Love" will also encourage your readers to link to you.
Add some Color with a Picture
It is advisable to add a picture or two to your postings. With the addition of a small image, which can be wrapped around with text on the left or right hand side, this will lead to your blog post to be easier on the readers eyes. Find some copyright and royalty free images to add to your posts. And it will add some flare and a touch of class to your blog. Remember there aren't many news papers out there who just publish in plain text. And a (good) picture says a thousand words, so use it to up your word count.

10 Beneficial Insects For Gardening
by Shamine Hoh
1. Aphid Midge: These insects look like a delicate, small wasp. The larvae eats more than sixty varieties of aphids from the garden. You can attract them by growing plants with a lot of pollen and nectar.
2. Big-Eyed Bug: This is a fast-moving bug with large eyes and very small black spots on it~s head and thorax. They are usually found in field crops and orchards. The big-eyed bug eats leafhoppers, spider mites, plant bugs, aphids, and small caterpillars. This bug is a real asset to gardening.
3. Ladybugs come in sizes ranging from 1/16 to 3/8 inch and have circular red, orange or yellow trunks with black markings. Where large amounts of pollen and nectar- producing flower are that is where you will find ladybugs. Aphids, mealybugs, small insects and scales are the ladybugs favorites. The ladybug is related to the Mexican bean beetle but they are beneficial.
4. Minute Pirate Bug: This bug is black and white and is typically about ~ of a inch long as an adult. They eat caterpillars, spider mites, insect eggs, leafhoppers, and thrips. They move fast and are attracted to gardens that contain goldenrod, yarrow, alfalfa, and daisies.
5. Mealybug Destroyer: The adult mealybug is 1/3 inch long with an oval body and a coral-colored abdomen. Their wing covers are black. If mealybugs are present, the mealybug destroyer is there naturally and feeds on mealybugs in the garden.
6. Spined Soldier Bug: An adult grows to ~ inch in length. They are grayish brown and the shoulders of the thorax come to sharp points. Bugs of choice are caterpillars, armyworms, grubs, sawflies, and Mexican bean beetle larvae. The spined soldier bug likes the shelter of perennial plants near a garden.
7. Tachinid Fly: These bugs resemble large, hairy houseflies and can become quite large (1/3 to ~ inch long). The eggs of the female Tachinid Fly kill a variety of species of caterpillars. Adult Tachinid Flies like flower nectar, parsley, sweet clover and dill.
8. Tiger Beetles: Look for adults that range in length from ~ to 3/4 inches. They are long-legged and bright-colored and eat many kinds of pests. Plant perennials when gardening and the tiger beetles should follow.
9. Tiger Beetles: This bug grows to approximately ~ to ~ inches long. They have long legs and are brightly colored. Tiger Beetles eat a variety of pests and are therefore an asset to gardening. To attract them plant perennials.
10. Bumblebee: The adults grow to 1 inch long and are plump with yellow and black striping. They have a hairy body and smoky-colored wings. The bumblebee is a pollinator and is attracted to pollen and nectar flowers.
It's important to attract beneficial insects to your garden. They pollinate and can rid your garden of unwanted pests.

Here are several tips for you to try when you design your own greeting cards.
1. There are many different types of greeting cards you can design including: wedding, anniversary, cards for kids, sympathy, holiday and get well cards. Choose one you need and get started.
2. The first thing you will need is good paper. You can purchase pre-folded paper or simply buy some card stock and fold it yourself. Using a bone folder will ensure a nice clean fold. Make sure you have envelopes to fit your choice of card.
3. For the front of the card you need to choose a sticker or rubber stamp with an image on it. Try using color stamp pads until you find the color and design you like if you're using rubber stamps. Layering stickers or your stamped image onto other paper and can add a bit of fun to your design. For this step, consider using a mixture of plain and matching patterned paper.
4. There are embellishments you can use instead of a stamp or sticker. These are often dimensional and add a lot to the design of your card.
5. Having the appropriate glue is important. Think carefully about what kind of adhesive you are going to use. For heavier items, the glue is a great tool but it tends to wrinkle your paper. Try using glue dots and strips on those gluing tasks. Consider buying glue sticks that are marked heavy duty because that it tends to dry smooth and clear and can be used on almost any kind of paper.
6. The next step is to design the text. What will your card say? A decision also needs to be made about whether to put the text on the inside or on the cover or both. The text can be applied using rubber stamps, stickers or computer printed letters.
7. Once you have your overall design it is best to lay everything out on the card before you glue it all together.
8. Next you should focus on the inside of your card. Decide what you want to say and consider layering it with other paper so it matches the design on the front of the card. Adhere these pieces to the inside of your card.
9. Check out the whole card now. Are you happy with the design? Does it need anything extra like colored brads or buttons? Is there part of the design that would look nice colored in with marker, colored pencils, chalks or watercolors?
10. No card is complete without fiber. Take several strands of coordinating ribbon, yarn, or thread and tie into a knot. Then attach the fiber with your glue gun. You can trim the ends so your needs.
11. The Envelope. Now that you have designed this beautiful card there it is not acceptable to put it in a plain or ordinary envelope. Using the same materials you used to design your card, decorate the envelope.

Viral Marketing
Expanding your markets for prosperity.
Joint Ventures - Part VII
By Nicholas Tan
Endorsements ---There are people and businesses that have a great personal relationship with their customers and prospects. They may not necessarily know this fact. In fact, a lot of them don't even realize the amount of pull they have with their audience. People who recommend certain stocks or trends, people who give great content and information to their subscribers, people who give investment advice, generally people who have a certain rapport with their subscribers. They are the ones you want to target. If their niche is non-marketing-related, so much the better in order to cut through this niche's clutter. I know someone who targeted golf enthusiasts for a marketing product, simply because of their test results. In any case, if you can JV with this sort of person who will endorse your product or service, you have a huge advantage. It's simply one of the best ways to print money on demand. Please don't overlook this technique.
These people may not even realize the relationship they have with their list. So you would be well advised to start with those folks.
JV Your List Building: Large List ---If you have a large list, one of the easiest ways to build it even further is to do a cross mailing. That is, you partner with another large list owner in your target market. You send out his message to your list, he sends out your message to his list. Simple. Just remember, once your prospects or customers are on another list that sells to them, there is increased message clutter. That is, they are now being pitched by your JV partner AND you. It's a tradeoff you need to consider.
JV Your List-Building: Small List ---Ok, if your existing list isn't large enough to warrant a cross JV mailing as described above, here's a clever way to build your list up quickly. I've done this, but not to the extent I should. I've got more deals like this in the works. Here's how it works:
Let's say your list is on the small side. "John Smith" has a huge list. You want to JV with him, but a cross swap isn't going to persuade him. You need to be the middle person between John Smith and another large list owner.
"Jane Doe" is another huge list owner. What if you can put John Smith and Jane Doe together to do a cross mailing, and you get exposure as well. Instead of a cut of profits, you agree to get a slice of the list. In other words, perhaps in order to get onto Jane's list from John's, they have to come through you first. Or, you could have John mail his list with the agreement that whatever prospects Jane gets, she'll share with you. It's a win/win/win situation, because all of you are gaining new prospects on your lists.
John gets some of Jane's list.
Jane gets some of John's list.
You get some of Jane's list. Or, ideally, you get some of both lists. You are the deal maker. It wouldn't have happened without you, so depending on the deal you make, why shouldn't you get access to both lists?
to be continued....

Parent's Corner!
Keeping Sane in today's world with tidbits of knowledge and wisdom.
When Parents Disagree It Is Often The Children Who Suffer Most
By Donald Saunders
Disagreement between parents are common, as is evidenced by a divorce rate which is now close to 50% in the United States, but the secret to successful parenting lies in the way in which such disagreements are handled.
One good thing is that whatever parents may disagree about, in the vast majority of cases, they will agree that there children should not be caught up in their disagreements and this provides an excellent starting point for creating a strategy to deal with disagreements.
Dealing with disagreement is not easy and it requires a great deal of thought, patience, maturity, tact and a host of other qualities. Perhaps most important of all however it requires an ability to put things into perspective and to approach problems both reasonably and realistically.
Disagreement often sparks high emotion and leads at best to irritation and at worst to extreme anger. Wherever you find yourself along this scale it will certainly affect your view of the situation giving rise to the disagreement and affect your objectivity.
The first thing that you must do whenever a problem looms is to recognize that your spouse may well have a different point of view, but that this is a view which they will nonetheless hold for good reason and is a view that is no less valid than your own. As such their thoughts on the subject should be respected and given due consideration alongside your own opinion.
The second thing to consider is the nature of the problem itself. It is surprising just how worked up we can get about issues which are really quite trivial. If the outcome is quite inconsequential then is it worth getting into a fight about it. If you decide that you want blue curtains in the spare bedroom and your spouse wants green curtains it's hardly worth falling out over it, especially if the spare room is probably only going to be used as a storeroom anyway.
The real problem comes when you disagree about something which you consider to be of particular importance and herein lies the difficulty for most parents as we often place far more importance on things than they really warrant.
The list of examples here is endless, but let's just look at one. What time should your child go to bed?
Most parents would agree that it is extremely important that a child gets a good night's sleep and would also agree that sending an eleven year old to bed at eight o'clock in the evening or letting him go to bed whenever he chooses is not in the child's best interest. But what time should he go to bed? One parent may feel strongly that he should be in bed by nine o'clock while the other might consider that this is too early and that ten o'clock would be more appropriate. One thing is fairly certain though and that is that the child will almost certainly prefer to go to bed later rather than earlier.
This might seem like a trivial issue when you read it in black and white, but it's surprising just how many parents almost come to blows over this particular question. The answer is of course that it is trivial and, whatever you decide, the outcome is anything but set in concrete.
Suppose for example that you feel strongly that ten o'clock is simply too late and that the child is not going to get enough sleep. Rather than cause a disagreement why not simply voice your opinion and then give it a try. If after a few days it's clear that the child isn't getting enough sleep and is having difficulty getting up in the morning and lacks energy during the day, then it's easy enough to bring his bedtime forward again.
Very few issues in life are of such fundamental importance that it is impossible to reach a compromise and, in most cases, decisions can be reversed if they turn out to have been the wrong decision.
One other very important factor to consider is that the way in which you handle disagreements sends a very strong message to your children.
It's good for children to see that mom and dad have different opinions and that they don't always agree on everything, but it's more important for them to see that each respects the views of the other and is prepared to listen, discuss and, if necessary, to compromise. Not only does this approach lead to a happier home environment, but it also provides the child with an excellent lesson and model to follow.

Pet's Corner!
Taking care of our animals correctly.
The Animal Rescue Site is having trouble getting enough people to click on their link daily to meet their quota to getting free food donated every day to abusedand neglected animals. It takes less than a minute to go to their site and click on "feed an animal in need" for free. This doesn't cost you a thing. Their corporate sponsors/advertisers use the number of daily visits to donate food to abandoned/neglected animals in exchange for advertising.
Here's the web site! Pass it along to people you know.

Pets And New Babies
By Teri Hanson
So you've done everything you need in preparing to bring home your new baby. You have the nursery decorated, the layette, have chosen a name and decided whether to breastfeed or bottle feed. One thing you may have forgotten is Fluffy and Rover... your pets. Up until now, your pets have probably been your "babies" and gotten most of your attention, they are used to being the king or queen of the house (my cat owns our house, she just lets us live here). Pets are a very important part of your household, a part of your family. How will they react to a new member of the family getting all of the attention that they once received? Will they be jealous? Will they become unsociable? It is very hard to say as each animal has a different personality, much like people. The following are a couple points that may give you some insight and tips for coping with your baby and your pet.
One of the myths I have heard from numerous sources is that cats will be very jealous and try to smother a baby when they are sleeping. Also, that they will suck a baby's breath away. I have heard that this is just a myth, but I wasn't taking any chances, so the following are a couple precautions to consider:
Keeping your pet out of the nursery while your baby is sleeping or unattended, while being not having to close the baby's door or lock up the dog or cat is a concern for many new parents. This could have easily been resolved by baby monitors, but I still felt like I was shutting the baby out. Installing an inexpensive screen door to the nursery is a good way to resolve the problem. Paint the screen door the same color as the trim and decorate it with baby motif. You can get very creative. This also makes a great conversation piece to anyone visiting your home.
Let your pet smell your baby and your baby's belongings. By brushing away the dog or cat every time your pet comes near your new baby can make the pet resentful. Your pet may resort to bad habits as a result of feeling unwanted and jealous.
Some have said to get a pet while your baby is young. They have felt in doing this your child and pet can grow up together and it will help to minimize jealousy. My opinion is that if you do not have a pet already, try to refrain from getting one until your baby is older. Keep in mind that puppies and kittens have very sharp little claws and teeth and while they mean no harm, they want to play and accidents happen. Also, puppies and kittens can be very active and demand a lot of attention in training. Consider whether you want to spend the time training the puppy or kitten or spend that time with your newborn.
Most important, do not leave your newborn unattended with a pet until you see how the pet reacts.

Tinctures Made From Fresh Herbs
By Mary Hanna
The principles behind making tinctures are to obtain the spiritual and physical quintessence of the plant. This is done by using the powers of ethyl alcohol to dissolve and preserve the herb you are using.
The material used to extract the herbs is known as the menstrum. The herbs you are tincturing are called the mark. Tincturing will extract and maintain both the water-soluble and alcohol-soluble properties of an herb.
Many people are making their own tinctures from dried and fresh herbs in an interest to be more involved in their health. Tinctures of fresh herbs have proven to be more vitalizing and longer surviving than dried herbs. Dried herbs tend to get moldy or be eaten by insects, tinctures will not. Tinctures will keep for as long as two years and sustain their potency if stored properly. Creating your own tinctures will save you quite a bit of money. If you obtain tinctures at a retail shop you might get a few ounces but if you create them yourself you can yield a quart.
When purchasing herbs, be sure you are buying from a trustworthy source. Worthier yet, cultivate your own herbs to be confident of the best possible quality. When growing your own you can make any number of combinations to produce your tinctures. I have further found that when growing my own herbs I get the greater gratification, knowing not only did I brew the tincture but I grew the herbs. I am part of the process from starting point to the development of the tinctures.
There are numerous items that you will require to cook up your own tinctures. Number one you need either powdered herbs or fresh cut herbs. Vodka, brandy or rum, 80 - 100 proof to pour over the herbs. Mason jars complete with lids, Muslin or Cheesecloth that is unbleached ands of course, labels.
Have on hand 7-10 ounces of chopped fresh herbs for every quart of vodka, brandy or rum. I always try to utilize fresh herbs when creating my tinctures. When using powdered herbs, I use 4 ounces of herbs to one pint of the spirit used. If you are making a tincture from bitter herbs it is best to use rum as it will disguise the flavor of the herbs. To knock out a non-alcoholic tincture, use distilled water, glycerol or vinegar. Just remember if you use the vinegar you must keep it in the refrigerator.
Put your herbs in the mason jars and then drizzle the spirit used over them so that it comes up to about an inch above the herbs. Close the lids tightly and tag the jars then put them in a very lightless, balmy section of your home. Keeping them in a paper bag has worked fine for me. You must shake the tincture everyday, several times a day if you can manage it. If you put it by the door you use most often every time you go in or out just shake the bag.
At the beginning inspect the tincture daily to be sure the vodka, brandy or rum still is covering the herbs. Allow the brew to steep for at least two weeks and up to three months. When you get to the allotted waiting interval, line a sieve with the cheesecloth or muslin and pour the fluid thru the sieve into fresh bottle. Draw in the ends of the cheesecloth and press to derive all of the fluid. You can now fill small-scale bottles with droppers with the tincture for easy use. Be positive to tag the jar with the name of othe herb the day, the month and the year that it was produced.
To use the tincture drop one teaspoon into juice, water, or tea, three times per day.
There are no hard and fast rules for creating tinctures. Experiment with diverse combinations. Be sure you note down the recipe you used for each batch so when you come up with a winner you will have it on file.
Here are a few ideas for treating colds. Prepare tinctures from the herbs that follow:
- echinacea (leaves, flowers)
- elder (leaves, flowers, berries)
- eyebright (leaves, flowers)
- ginger (root)
- peppermint (leaves)
- yarrow (leaves, flowers)
- catnip (leaves)

Nutrition- Fuel For Our Bodies
By Michelle Bery
When it comes to making choices for the overall health of our bodies, food plays one of the most predominant roles. While poor nutrition can lead to obesity, high blood pressure, elevated cholesterol, and a host of illness and disease, good nutrition can be the most important tool to achieving optimum health and ideal weight.
Good nutrition comes in the form of a healthy diet; a diet focused around whole, natural foods such as fresh fruits, green leafy vegetables, whole grains, lean protein, and low-fat dairy. A healthy diet should resemble a colorful palette --- deep, vibrant colors that reflect the concentration of vitamins and minerals essential to good health.
Protein, a part of good nutrition, can be found in foods such as lean meats, whole nuts, and soy products. Healthy carbohydrates are found in whole grain breads, sweet potatoes, brown rice, and wheat pasta. Low-fat dairy provides adequate reserves of calcium. And Vitamin C is found in citrus fruits. Many people choose to eat only organic foods as a way to minimize additives and ensure that the foods they eat contain the highest nutritional value possible.
Additionally, experts agree that good nutrition includes adequate hydration. The drinking of at least eight glasses of water a day flushes the body of toxins, speeds metabolism, aids digestion, and acts as a natural appetite suppressant.
In combination with this diet regime, it is essential to minimize --- and even avoid altogether --- foods that are fried, processed, and high in salt, sugar, and saturated fats.
In the search for optimum nutrition it is important to first analyze the diet you currently follow. Look for ways to gradually add more natural foods to your diet and minimize those foods that lack fundamental nutrients and are highly caloric. If you find it difficult to make these adjustments, it may be beneficial to work with a nutritionist who can tailor a diet to your particular lifestyle.
Ultimately, nutrition that positively affects health, vitality, and longevity, means a commitment to a varied diet of vitamin and mineral packed food.
